Little Sisters of the Poor

Knights of Columbus Nun Run

Jeanne Jugan Residence is a place where the Little Sisters of the Poor provide quality care for the elderly poor in a loving, home-like environment. Since 1903 the Little Sisters of the Poor have cared for thousands of elderly Delawareans with limited resources. They welcome low-income elderly of at least 60 years of age regardless of race or religion and specialize in residence from all parts of Delaware. Visit their web site http://www.littlesistersofthepoordelaware.org/ for more detailed information. The Little Sisters of the Poor accomplish their mission solely through donations and fund raisers. One of their main fund raisers is the annual Nun Run 5K Run & Walk which will be held on September 15, 2018 9AM at the Jeanne Jugan Residence in Newark, DE. This year is special for the Little Sisters of the Poor because they will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the community’s arrival in the United States. From Jeanne Jugan’s humble heart flowed a great wave of charity that eventually spread all over the world. This wave reached America on September 13, 1868, when seven Little Sisters arrived in Brooklyn, New York after a long ocean voyage to establish the community’s first home in America. For more information on the Nun Run go to web site www.nunrun5k.org for more details and to register.

Our State Deputy Robert Rossi and the State Officers have recommended the Delaware Knights of Columbus be the primary sponsor of the “Nun Run”. This fits well into our mission of charity and an excellent advertisement for us while putting our name out in front of many potential candidates. To accomplish this, the State Council has allotted $1,000, Coffee Run plans to authorize $1,000 in July, St. John the Beloved Council and St. Michael Council have donated $500 each and Cardinal Gibbons Assembly plans a $300 donation. We request additional support from councils and assemblies because the primary sponsorship is valued at $5,000. Each Council and Assembly should send their donation directly to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road in Newark, DE 19713 with a notation for the Nun Run. Also, please send me notification so I can keep track. The donation will have the same effect as if a council was giving it as an unrestricted gift (no overhead or carrying charges of any kind). Of course this donation would qualify as a council activity for the Columbian Award. Please give whatever your council can afford $100, $50, or even just $10 but it is important every council participates.

Benefits by being the primary sponsor are:

  • The head table at the event with recruiting literature available

  • The Knights are given time at the awards for a short recruitment talk

  • Recognition in the Little Sisters Winter/Christmas newsletter

  • Inclusion on Little Sisters web site with link to our web site

  • KofC State banner in front of Residence

  • KofC recruitment flyer in each participants goodie bag (about 600 participants)

  • KofC logo prominently displayed on t-shirts given to each participant

  • The Fourth Degree presents the colors and the State Deputy leads the Pledge of Allegiance

Please encourage your council members come out and be a participant in the run/walk. The walk can be the 5K or the mini walk which is one lap around the residence.
