In 1951 he moved to New Lenox with his wife and two young children where he joined St. Jude's church and served as the first president of St. Jude Parents Club in 1954. He remained Active at the parish through many activities, most recently the Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th degree knight. Eugene was also active at Providence High School during its founding years; he was a member of the Providence Advisory Board in the 1970s, and for many years an active member of the Booster Club where he helped sell thousands of raffle tickets, a tradition that he carried on into recent years with the Knights of Columbus. Professionally, Gene was a purchasing agent for Inland Steel for 42 years before retiring in 1989. After his retirement, Gene and his wife travelled extensively - often finding friends and relatives to visit around the world. Gene had a love of music and hospitality. He was a member of the St. Jude's early choirs. He and his wife hosted countless family and friends at their Home on Second Avenue where there was always song and refreshments. An avid fisherman, Gene inspired an enduring family tradition of fishing trips, bonding generations of Schubert men, nephews, & friends. The ultimate family man, he cherished the women in his life, nurturing lasting relationships and providing love and support. We are forever blessed with his numerous examples of generosity, loyalty, and faith. |
