ROUND TABLES
Benefits of a Parish Round Table
A parish round table serves a parish in diverse ways, yet its overarching goal remains consistent: to actively involve Knights of Columbus members, aiding the parish and promoting visible Catholic action through charitable works across all parishes and missions within the Order. Additionally, in sustainable parishes, the aim is to evolve the round table into a fully functioning council.
Establishing a parish round table yields numerous benefits for the parish, its priest, and the Knights. The Knights of Columbus parish round table establishes a distinctive and effective support structure within the parish. Whether contributing to fundraising for essential needs or actively engaging in parish ministries, committed Knights serve as invaluable resources for addressing the specific needs of the parish.
The advantages of a round table extend to local councils and their members. Through personal service to respective parishes, the Order fulfills its commitment to serving the Catholic Church and the broader communities. Active involvement in our own parishes, as Knights, not only strengthens personal faith but also contributes to creating spiritually enriched environments for our families.
Guidelines for Establishing a Parish Round Table include:
- Parish round tables are particularly beneficial for providing a Knights of Columbus presence and service to smaller parishes, missions, and addressing ethnic development needs. Larger parishes with over 150 families should explore forming their own council initially.
- The grand knight and officers compile lists of council members belonging to designated area parishes, automatically enrolling them in the parish round table. New parishioners are also encouraged to join.
- The grand knight, with the support of officers and insurance agents, informs council members from the designated parish about the initiative and elucidates its benefits.
- The grand knight, along with a Knight parishioner, visits the pastor to offer assistance. Projects are assigned by the pastor, avoiding conflicts with existing groups, and the grand knight provides the priest with a list of Knights who are parishioners.
- A single parish round table coordinator is appointed for each designated parish, and the grand knight completes the Report of the Parish Round Table Coordinator (Form #2629) for processing and dissemination.
Operating a Parish Round Table involves:
- No elected offices; the grand knight appoints a coordinator as the designated leader, acting as a liaison between the round table and the council.
- Meetings are held as necessary to support the pastor and parish community.
- The parish round table has no dues, and members fulfill financial obligations to their council. Projects are considered council projects, requiring communication with the grand knight and council for success.
- Frequent visits by the coordinator to the pastor are suggested, ensuring proactive assistance and lightening the pastor's workload.
- The coordinator calls on qualified parish round table members for specific projects, seeking support from the whole council when needed.
- Annual reviews of round table activities and the coordinator's effectiveness are conducted by the grand knight and the pastor.
- In cases of coordinator changes or resignations, the pastor selects a new coordinator, with the grand knight making the appointment. For changes in pastors, the grand knight and coordinator inform the new pastor and seek continued support.
Using the Name of the Parish Round Table involves incorporating the parish name and city for clarity (e.g., St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus Parish Round Table of New Haven).
Communication protocols include regular reporting by the round table coordinator at business meetings, announcements in parish and council bulletins, and sharing project details with relevant publications.
Round Table Reporting involves two main forms:
- Report of the Parish Round Table Coordinator (Form #2629), submitted as needed, reporting the coordinator assigned to each parish.
- Annual Report of the Knights of Columbus Round Table (Form #2630), due by June 30, reporting the growth and activity of the established parish round table.
When the parish round table coordinator changes, the grand knight notifies the Fraternal Mission Department, state and district deputies, and the outgoing coordinator with an updated Form #2629.
