KNIGHTS OF THE MONTH

December 2019

Rick Park

Council 9993 is pleased to recognize Rick Park as Council 9993 December 2019 Knight of the Month. Rick transferred to Council 9993 from Holy Spirit Council in Annandale, Virginia when he moved to Colorado Springs with his wife, Cathy, in 2018. In Virginia, Rick served in several officer positions in Council 11922 and as the Chairman of the Church Committee. He also organized the Council's Keep Christ in Christmas campaign, their annual memorial mass, and a program that prepared and presented gifts to the newly baptized members of the Church. Since joining Council 9993, Rick was elected as an outside guard and is a regular member of the serving crew at our pancake breakfasts. Rick and Cathy also help out at Marian House with other members of St. Patrick's the first Saturday of the month. Brother Rick has also helped with Coats for Kids, Holiday Food Baskets and Tootsie Rolls. Thank you, Brother Rick for the many ways you inspired and contributed to the Country, Parish, Diocese, and Council 9993.

Tony Patalano

Council 9993 is pleased to recognize Tony Patalano as Council 9993 November 2019 Knight of the Month. Tony has been attending St Parish since August 1996. He and his wife Jeanne have one son, AJ III (Jessica), and one daughter, Cassandra. They have 4 grand children. Sir Knight Tony joined the Order in February 2011 and quickly became a 4th Degree Knight with Assembly 3049. SK Tony is currently Council 9993 Recorder and an active participant in many Council activities. Tony i s a n a c t i v e member of the St Patrick Marian House Soup Kitchen Ministry and serves weekly with the Wednesday Soup Kitchen group. SK Tony is retired from the US Air Force having served 26 years of dedicated service. Thank you, SK Tony for the many ways you inspired and contributed to the Country, Parish, Diocese, Assembly 3049 and Council 9993.

Ray Meadows

Sir Knight Ray joined the order in April 1993 after entering the Church in Bartlett, TN. He became a 4th Degree Knight in October 1994. Brother Ray has held many positions in the Knights of Columbus. He is a Past Grand Knight, Former District Deputy, Past Faithful Navigator, and Former District Marshall. Ray moved to Colorado in April 2019, joined St Patrick Church, transferred his Council and Fourth Degree membership to St Patrick. Brother Ray now serves as the Council Program Director and Vice President of Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapter 2954. Sir Knight Ray coordinated the First Annual Men’s Retreat at St Patrick this past October. He also serves as the Chair person for the Coats for Kids program for both the Council and the Chapter. Since joining St Patrick Parish, Ray serves as an EMHC and Sacristan for Thursday Daily mass and is a regular volunteer for 1st Saturday Marian House Soup Kitchen. HIs wife of thirty-nine years Debbie, and Ray have two adult sons, Jonathan and Joseph. They have five grandkids ages nine to twenty years of age. Debbie is a Registered Nurse and works for a Home Health Company. Brother Ray works as a Senior IT Project Manager for Frontdoor Inc, a Home Warranty Company. Ray’s favorite football teams include the Denver Broncos, Memphis Tigers, and Alabama Crimson Tide, Roll Tide Roll! We are blessed for having Brother Ray in Council 9993. We thank him for his dedicated service to the Knights of Columbus, our Council, church, and community.

Tom Stevens

Brother Thomas “Tom” Stevens joined the Order in October 1979 and now is a Sir Knight in the 4th Degree. For his faithful participation and contributions, Brother Tom is recognized as the Council 9993 September 2019 Knight of the Month. Tom served his country in the US Army, 101st Airborne Division. He is retired from the Air Force as a GS civilian. In the Knights, Tom has been active in events such as Parish Picnic, Oktoberfest, Tootsie Rolls, pancake breakfasts and has led Fish Fries. Tom has previously served as Trustee. He was on the committee for the parish newcomer wine and cheese ministry after 5 PM Saturday Mass that was held years ago. He was a member of the Parish Kitchen committee until it disbanded, and helped train people in proper use of the kitchen. Tom is currently spearheading the Knights Only Socials occurring on the 5th Wednesdays of the month. Tom has served on the board of his HOA. He participates in the Rocky Mountain Eagles Chapter of the 101st Airborne Division Association, and was a volunteer who helped plan and put on the recent national reunion held in Colorado Springs. Tom and his wife also Valerie spend many hours of child care and support for their grandson. We are blessed for having Brother Tom in Council 9993. We thank him for his dedicated service to the country, church, community, and Council.

Andy Ziny

Andy has been a parish member since April 2006. He serves as a lector, EMHC, sacristan, acolyte, servant leader of sacristans and acolytes, coordinator of the Monday evening Bible study, coordinator of the Holiday Food Basket ministry, part of the Fostering Hope "Haven" ministry, member of the finance council, and sometimes carpenter (he built three tables on and near the altar, frame/stand for the Divine Mercy image, and have three kneelers in the queue to be completed). Brother Andy is a retired US Air Force service member, and currently works as a civilian for the Air Force at Peterson AFB. His job is transportation planning for homeland defense and assistance to civil authorities, which usually means providing assistance in the wake of natural disasters, such as the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010, the hurricanes that hit Texas, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in 2017, and hurricane Dorian which severely damaged some of the islands in the Bahamas earlier this month. Andy also volunteers at the Arts and Crafts center on the Air Force Academy and teaches introductory wood working classes. Andy married his wife Michele in 1985. They have two grown children, daughter (Charlotte, age 32) lives in southern Virginia with her husband and works as an assistant professor of Nursing at Sentera College of Health. Son (Anton, age 31) lives in Alamogordo NM and works on F-16 aircraft at Hollomon AFB and volunteers as a fire fighter. We are blessed for having Brother Andy in Council 9993. We thank him for his dedicated service in the Country, Council, church, and community.

Jaime Santos

Sir Knight Jaime Santos joined the Order in December 2001 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. SK Jaime quickly progressed to the 3rd Degree and 4th Degree. He later joined Council 9993 and Assembly 3049 in 2007. For his faithful participation and contributions, SK Jaime is recognized as the Council 9993 July 2019 Knight of the Month. SK Jaime is a Past Grand Knight of Council 9993 and a Past Faithful Navigator of Assembly 3049. SK Jaime is currently a Trustee with Council 9993 and a Faithful Admiral with Assembly 3049. SK Jaime is a retiree from the United States Air Force with 28+ years of dedicated service. He is currently a U.S. Government Service engineer with the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) at Schriever Air Force Base. SK Jaime is an active participant in the Church Masses, pancake breakfasts, Parish picnics, Tootsie Roll drives, and many Council and Assembly activities/events. SK Jaime enjoys spending time with his family, attending sporting events, and traveling. We are blessed for having SK Jaime in Council 9993 and Assembly 3049. We thank him for his dedicated service in the Country, Council, Assembly, church, and community.

Jim Luckenbaugh

Brother James “Jim” Luckenbaugh joined the Order in March 2012. Brother Jim quickly progressed to the 3 rd Degree. For his faithful participation and contributions, Brother Jim is recognized as the Council 9993 June 2019 Knight of the Month. Brother Jim is currently an active participant in the Church’s Masses, pancake breakfasts, and other events. Brother Jim also enjoys spending time with his family, attending local sporting events, and volunteering/participating in local events of interest. We are blessed for having Brother Jim in Council 9993. We thank him for his dedicated service to the country, church, community, and Council.

Jim Ruby

Council 9993 is pleased to recognize Brother James Ruby as Council 9993 May 2019 Knight of the Month. Brother Jim joined St. Patrick’s in 1987. He became a 3rd Degree Knight in the late 1990's. He has faithfully volunteered over the years in the St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, K of C Pancake Breakfast and at the church picnic. Presently, Jim is enjoying retirement with his wife Clare and their Keeshond, Kona. Jim was employed by the U.S. Olympic Committee for thirty-two years. He was fortunate to work and attend multiple summer and winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The Games allowed him to travel extensively as part of the Olympic family. Jim is an avid reader. He enjoys wine, traveling, hiking and camping with his wife and dog throughout the year. Thank you, Brother Jim for the many ways you have inspired and contributed to the St. Patrick Parish, the Diocese of Colorado Springs, and Council 9993.

Gerry Haag

Brother Gerald “Gerry” Haag joined the Order in February 1999. Brother Gerry quickly progressed to the 3rd Degree. For his faithful participation and contributions, Brother Gerry is recognized as the Council 9993 April 2019 Knight of the Month. Brother Gerry is currently an active participant in the Church’s masses, pancake breakfasts, and other events. He’s also the father of four and grandfather to seven. Brother Gerry has over 40 years of contributing to consumer electronic products as a semiconductor electronic engineer. Brother Gerry is also a veteran from the United States Army with three years of active and five years of reserve dedicated service. Brother Gerry enjoys spending time with his family, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, cross-country travel across the amazing USA with and without a 24’ travel trailer, and blowing snow with his garden tractor. We are blessed for having Brother Gerry in Council 9993. We thank him for his dedicated service in the military, Council, church, and community.

Walt McBain

Sir Knight Walter “Walt” McBain joined the Order in October 2008 in Durango, Colorado. SK Walt quickly progressed to the 3rd Degree. He then joined Assembly 3049 as a 4th Degree Knight. For his faithful participation and contributions, SK Walt is recognized as the Council 9993 March 2019 Knight of the Month. SK Walt is currently an active participant in the Church’s masses, pancake breakfasts, frequently assists at the Marian House soup kitchen on the first Saturday of the month with other members of St. Patrick’s parish. Brother Walt is also a Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and serves as the Wednesday morning Mass Sacristan. He is also a member of the Tuesday morning St. Pat’s breakfast club. SK Walt is also a retiree from the United States Government with 41 years of combined service in the US Army and US Postal Service. SK Walt continues to work part time as a ride share provider in and around Colorado Springs. SK Walt enjoys spending time with his family near and far, attending sporting events, skiing, and hiking. SK Walt is married to his bride of 28+ years, Janet, and is the proud father of their three adult daughters Sarah, Marybeth and Brittany. We are blessed for having SK Walt in Council 9993. Alex Gonzalez

Brother Alex Gonzalez joined the Order in June 2014. Brother Alex quickly progressed to the 3 rd Degree. Dave Henggeler

Brother Dave Henggeler joined the Order in June 1961. Brother Dave quickly progressed to the 3rd Degree. For his faithful participation and contributions, Brother Dave is recognized as the Council 9993 January 2019 Knight of the Month. Brother Dave is currently an active participant in the Church’s Masses, pancake breakfasts, and other Council events. He also volunteers at the Elks Lodge 309. Brother Dave served for six years in the Army Reserves after high school. He and his wife (Linda) owned and operated a restaurant and lounge, in his Nebraska hometown, for a few years. Brother Dave enjoyed most of his working career in sales. The last 23 years, before retirement, was in recreational vehicles (RV) sales. Even in his retirement, he continues to work a few hours a month, at Costco, in carpeting and wood flooring sales. Besides enjoying time his family, Brother Dave likes to keep busy, working in his garden and antiquing. He faithfully meets with a 6-am coffee group each morning. We are blessed for having Brother Dave in Council 9993. We thank him for his dedicated service in the Military, Council, Church, and community activities.

Jim McDermott

We are happy to announce the Brother James McDermott has been selected as Council 9993 December 2018 Knight of the Month. During his tenure with our council, and before, Brother Jim has been a shining example of the principles we stand for, especially charity. Jim and Maxine joined St. Patrick Parish in 1986, and he quickly became very involved in church activities. He started acting as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion for the homebound, got very active in the Cursillo movement, and completed the 4-year course on the Bible. As member of the Building and Properties Committee, he was involved with a lot of planning on the addition of offices and classrooms to the church, including travels to visit other parishes, researching contractors, etc. He also was a regular participant in the St. Patrick monthly Men’s Breakfast. Jim’s EMHC ministry turned up a notch when he was introduced to the hospice program with Pikes Peak Hospice in 2000. For 17 years he has made home visits to elderly, ill, and homebound. Hospice visits entailed 2 to 4 hours of time with each person, talking, praying, listening, and sometimes giving a helping hand. Caregivers would often leave and take a break, knowing that their loved one was with someone they could trust. Jim would accompany many on their final journey, including some Brother Knights. Sometimes that journey would last for a year or two and many visits. For Jim, the reward was seeing how much the visits meant to clients and family, and very few other people were aware of his ministry. When Jim joined Council 9993 in 2010, he immediately got involved with council activities, including pancake breakfasts, fish fries, council and parish picnics, and giving out Tootsie Rolls for the Mentally Handicapped program. He quickly advanced to the 3rd Degree of the Order and has served as both Inside Guard and Outside Guard. In 2013, Jim became editor of the “Knights Knews”, the Council newsletter. His efforts included getting the printed copies addressed and mailed, and he spent extra efforts finding out which Knights received the newsletter electronically, so that postage could be saved. He continued as editor until poor eyesight made it too difficult. Most recently, Jim became part of the new council “Knights Konnect” ministry, which has the goal of reaching out to Brother Knights or their family members who are elderly, ill, injured, or homebound. Even before that ministry was started, he was caring for Brother Knights, including one who was advanced in age and showing signs of dementia. Jim would visit, take him out for breakfast, and provide a sense of continuity with a familiar face. Jim took the extra time to learn about his Brother Knight’s past, some of his family history, and his interests. Then he did research, gathered pictures and information, and made a book of memories and things to talk about. That book is treasured and has accompanied his friend to a memory unit in a nursing home, where Jim still visits him. For his charity, loyalty, and faithful service, we are proud to honor James “Jim” McDermott as Council 9993 Knight of the Month for December 2018.

Frank Peck

Brother Frank Peck reactivated in the Order in January 2007. For his dedicated service and contributions, Brother Frank is recognized as the Council 9993 November 2018 Knight of the Month. Brother Frank is currently the Council’s Inside Guard. He’s also an active participant in pancake breakfasts, Tootsie Roll drive and other Council events. Frank served in the US Army. Frank and his wife Carole, a member of the ladies’ auxiliary, are active in the parish and community. He is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Memorial Hospital North and frequently serves at parish Masses as sacristan and/or Acolyte. Frank enjoys spending time with his siblings, wife, children and grandchildren, attending special events, playing pickle ball, and still occasionally camping (if bed is provided), and hiking short distances. We are blessed for having Brother Frank in Council 9993. We thank him for his dedicated service in the military, church, community, and Council activities. Note from WDGK Ernie: Brother Frank Peck gave numerous hours handing out tootsie rolls during our Tootsie Roll Campaign and also braved the bitter cold volunteering his time every week from 2:00 am – 4:00 am during the 40 Days of Life. In addition, you could observe Brother Frank helping out at the Pancake Breakfast as a cashier.

Brother Mariano Nandin joined the Order in January 1985 and progressed to the 3rd Degree. For his dedicated service and contributions, Brother Mariano is recognized as the Council 9993 October 2018 Knight of the Month. Steve Reed

Sir Knight Steve Reed joined the Order in October 2016. SK Steve quickly progressed to the 4th Degree and then also joined St. Patrick Assembly 3049. For his dedicated service and contributions, SK Steve is recognized as the Council 9993 September 2018 Knight of the Month. SK Steve is currently the Council 9993 Treasurer and an active participant in the Church’s masses, our tootsie roll drive, and other events. Steve and his wife of almost 45 years, Debbie, volunteer each week at the Marian House Soup Kitchen and at St. Patrick’s Food Pantry. Steve also delivers Meals-on-Wheels weekly for Silver Key. SK Steve was in the United States Air Force for six years and then retired from the City of Colorado Springs’ Budget Department after 25 years of public service. SK Steve enjoys spending time with his family, attending sporting events and hiking. We are blessed for having SK Steve in Council 9993. Greer Bailey

Brother Greer Bailey joined the Order in December 2000. Brother Greer progressed to the 3rd Degree. Tracy Estes

Elis Elee

Sir Knight Ellis joined the Order in July 2013. Sir Knight Ellis quickly progressed to the 4th Degree. For his dedicated service and contributions, Sir Knight Ellis is recognized as the Council 9993 May 2018 Knight of the Month. Family members include his wife Rachael, Victoria, Kayla, Donald, Alexis, Perry, Mackenzie, and Gabriel. SK Ellis’ family participates in many Parish and Knights of Columbus activities. Some of the Parish activities include Hospitality Minister, Life Teen, Young Adults, Youth Choir, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lenten Stations of the Cross service, and assisting with Vacation Bible School. SK Ellis is currently an active participant in the Council pancake breakfasts, parish picnics, fish fries, and other events. Paul Brown

Council 9993 is pleased to recognize Brother Paul Brown as Council 9993 April 2018 Knight of the Month. Brother Paul was born on July 6, 1968 in Fargo, ND. He grew up as a military dependent and joined the Army on September 2nd, 1986 as a part of the US Army Field Artillery. He volunteered for combat duty during Operation Desert Shield and served with the 101st Airborne Division for Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Brother Paul has been a member of the St. Patrick's Parish for approximately 12 years and has been a brother Knight for the last 2 years. He enjoys helping out with the monthly Pancake Breakfast, the Tootsie Roll drive and the Ministry Fairs and looks forward to being able to expand his service to the community in the future as time allows. We are blessed for having Brother Knight Paul in Council 9993. We thank him for his enthusiastic participation in Council, church, and community activities.

Steve Smith

Brother Sir Knight Steve “Smitty” Smith joined the order in October of 2014 and became a 4th Degree Knight in May of 2016. For his dedicated service and contributions, Brother Steve is recognized as the Council 9993 March 2018 Knight of the Month. Born in Rochester, NY, Brother Steve earned his BS in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology from Oklahoma State University in December of 1994. Since 2001 he has worked as a Fire Protection Engineer (non-registered) with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Steve enjoys spending time with his family, the outdoors, photography and working with his hands. He is active in his son’s Boy Scout Troop #268 and his daughters American Heritage Girl Troop #1876. Both of which meet at St. Patrick. Brother Steve is very active in the Council. He currently holds the position of Council Warden and serves as the Council Newsletter Editor and co-webmaster. Brother Steve also manages the Council social media sites on Instagram and Facebook. On top of all that, Steve helps out with the monthly pancake breakfasts and most recently coordinated the 2018 Lenten Fish Fry’s the Council put on for the parish. We are blessed to have Brother Knight Steve in Council 9993. We thank him for his enthusiastic participation in Council, church, and community activities.

Vince Lardinois

Brother Knight Vincent “Vince” Lardinois joined the order in March 1996 and quickly became a 3rd Degree Knight. For his dedicated service and contributions, Brother Vince is recognized as the Council 9993 February 2018 Knight of the Month. Brother Vince is currently an active participant in the Council’s monthly Pancake Breakfast efforts. Brother Vince also leads the Council’s Lighthouse Catholic Media program, bringing parish members great Catholic resources, in the form of CDs and booklets, to help them on their spiritual journey. Brother Vince is married to wife Sandy. Both Vince and Sandy enjoy spending time with their family, traveling, and attending/volunteering at church and Council activities. We are blessed to have Brother Knight Vince in Council 9993. We thank him for his enthusiastic participation in Council, church, and community activities.

Eric Siverts

Brother Knight Eric Siverts joined the order in July 2004. For his dedicated service and contributions, Brother Eric is recognized as the Council 9993 January Knight of the Month. Brother Eric is currently an active participant in the Church’s masses as a sacristan, EMHC and acolyte. He’s also St. Patrick’s Director of Adult Faith Formation, responsible for Bible studies, and Small Church Communities. Brother Eric is married to Gerri and they will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary in June. Eric and Gerri have three children and 7 grandchildren. Eric enjoys spending time with his family, attending his children’s sporting events, camping, and hiking. We are blessed for having Brother Knight Eric in Council 9993. We thank him for his enthusiastic participation in Council, church, and community activities.

Tim Giblin

Brother Knight Tim Giblin joined the order in February 2013. For his dedicated service and contributions, Brother Tim is recognized as the Council 9993 December 2017 Knight of the Month. Brother Tim is currently an active participant in the Council’s monthly Pancake Breakfast efforts. Brother Tim was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. Tim is a Physics Professor and Director of the Quantitative Reasoning Center at the USAF Academy. Tim enjoys hiking in the high country and playing music in his acoustic trio “Three Faces West” around the Colorado Springs area. We are blessed for having Brother Knight Tim in Council 9993. We thank him for his enthusiastic participation in Council, church, and community activities.

Rene Romero

Brother Knight Rene Romero joined the Order in October 2016. For his dedicated service and contributions to our parish, Brother Rene is recognized as the Council 9993 November 2017 Knight of the Month. Brother Rene and his wife, Sharmin, both recently retired from the Air Force. Together they served our country a combined 52 years. In celebration of their service and to show their kids the country they served, they are on a 1-year trip around the United States in their 5th wheel trailer. With their three children, Ben, Matthew, and Elena and their family dog, Molly, they departed on their journey on 7 July. You are invited to follow the Romero’s on their family blog, 5forGodandCountry.com. One of the many highlights of their ongoing trip was visiting the Knights of Columbus Museum and St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven, CT. It was at St. Mary’s in 1882 that Fr. McGivney founded the Order and where his remains were entombed in 1982. An active member of the parish for the last three years, Rene served as a member of the Parish Council. Additionally, he served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, a Lector, and Troop Chaplain for St. Patrick’s Boy Scout Troop 268, where both of his sons recently earned Eagle Scout. We are blessed for having Brother Knight Rene in Council 9993.

Chris McDermott

Brother Knight Christopher “Chris” McDermott joined the order in February 2013. For his dedicated volunteering spirit, Brother Chris is recognized as the Council 9993 October 2017 Knight of the Month. Brother Chris is currently an active participant in the Council’s monthly Pancake Breakfast efforts, St Patrick’s Men’s groups, and the local Boy Scout Troop. He is an RCIA sponsor, a coach of whatever his sons are currently playing (baseball, basketball, track), and volunteers weekly at Divine Redeemer. Chris has an apple press and puts on a demonstration every year for local first graders. Brother Chris is married to Patty McDermott and they will celebrate their 20th anniversary on the 4th of July. Chris and Patty have two sons, a sophomore at Rampart High School and an 8th grader at Divine Redeemer. He enjoys spending time with his family, attending his children’s sporting events, camping, hiking, attending the theatre, Irish music, and good whiskey! Chris is a graduate of the Denver Biblical School and completed the Apologetics Course. We are blessed for having Brother Knight Chris in Council 9993. We thank him for his enthusiastic participation in Council, church, and community activities.

Brother Knight Patrick Kluckman joined the order in September 2005. For his dedicated volunteering spirit, Brother Knight Pat is recognized as the Council 9993 September 2017 Knight of the Month. Brother Pat currently leads the Council’s monthly Pancake Breakfast efforts. Brother Pat normally leads the early shift with a total of approximately 10 Brother Knights. Brother Pat is a retired Navy officer. He enjoys spending time with his family, attending and volunteering at church. We are blessed for having Brother Patrick in Council 9993. Jake Justen

A Fourth Degree Knight, Sir Knight Jake Justen joined the order in August 2000, this year he celebrates his 17th year with the Knights. For his dedicated service and contributions, Sir Knight Jake is recognized as the Council 9993 August 2017 Knight of the Month. Brother Jake is currently active in Council and Assembly activities. Brother Jake has served in both Council and Assembly officer positions in recent years. Currently, Brother Jake supports Council Pancake breakfasts, Corporate Communions, and other activities as required. He’s also a member of Assembly 3049 Color Corps supporting multiple honor guard events throughout the year. Since joining the Knights of Columbus in 2000, Brother Jake has been a dedicated Knight supporting numerous Council and Assembly activities. Ted Morgan

A Fourth Degree Knight, Sir Knight Theodore ”Ted” Morgan joined the order in July of 2016. For his dedicated service and contributions to the Knights of Columbus and the Council, Sir Knight Ted is recognized as Council 9993, July 2017 Knight of the Month. Brother Ted has been married to his wife Jeannie for 34 years and they have three adult kids, Amy, Ben and Peter. Brother Ted is currently Chancellor for the Council and serves as the Membership Director responsible for recruitment. Brother Ted also led the successful Council’s Sky Sox Tailgate and Family Night event. The event hosted over 50 Knights, Ladies, family members, and friends. Ted has worked in the insurance industry for 42 years and is currently a Financial Advisor for Transamerica. In his spare time, Ted and his wife enjoy the outdoors, camping, fishing and boating. Ted shoots trap, shoots pool, hunts, plays chess, mountain bikes, and has been involved with the martial arts since 1983. He has been a black belt in Shotokan Karate since 1996. Since joining the Knights of Columbus in 2016, Brother Ted has quickly advanced to the Fourth Degree as a member of St. Patrick Assembly 3049. Kendell Mann

A Fourth Degree Knight, Sir Knight Kendell Mann joined the order in February 2015. For his compassion and dedicated volunteering spirit, Sir Knight Kendell is recognized as the Council 9993 June 2017 Knight of the Month. Brother Kendell currently leads the Council’s Pancake Breakfast efforts. He’s responsible for scheduling and manning the Council’s monthly breakfast activities. He established an ingenious and easy process, using SignUpGenius, for brother knights to sign up to support two main breakfast shifts. Both shifts combined assign a total of 20 brother knights to man shift leader, worker, and cashier positions. Brother Kendell retired from the Army in Dec 2015 after 23.5 years of service. He has been married to Roxane for over 20 years and they have three children. He enjoys spending time with his family, attending his children’s soccer games, traveling, biking, and volunteering at church. Since joining the Knights of Columbus in 2015, Brother Kendell has quickly advanced to the Fourth Degree as a member of St. Patrick Assembly 3049. We are blessed for having Sir Knight Kendell in Council 9993 and Assembly 3049. We applaud him for his service and brotherhood.

Matt Dodds

The Brothers of St. Patrick Council 9993 recognize Brother Matt A. Dodds for his service to the membership. He chaired the July 21 Sky Sox $2 Tuesday and Tailgate. There was a great turnout and all had a fun time. Also in July Brother Matt finished his first month as an elected officer (Council Chancellor) for the 2015-2016 year. Brother Matt joined the order via Council #9993 in December, 2000, and advanced to the third degree in October, 2003. At that time he was actively serving in the US Air Force and was subject to reassignments. While assigned at Vandenberg Air Force Base in CA he served two terms as Financial Secretary with his Council there. He retired from the Air Force in 2005 with 20 years of service and returned to Colorado Springs with his wife, Kimberly, and son. They have been married for 27 years. Matt and his son assist with the Council’s Monthly Pancake Breakfast. Thank you, Matt, for your years of service and fellowship as a Knight of Columbus. Thanks also for 20 years of service to our nation while in the U. S. Air Force.

Father Nathaniel Hinds

The Brothers of St. Patrick Council 9993 recognize Father Nathan Hinds upon the completion of his journey to ordination to the priesthood on May 30, 2015. Bishop Michael Sheridan laid his hands upon Father Nathan administering the Sacrament of Holy Orders as he became a priest of the Diocese of Colorado Springs. Our Brother Knight, Father Nathans’s journey to Catholicism and his becoming a priest is a sign of the Holy Spirit working in our midst. He grew up in Colorado Springs and was raised in an Evangelical family. As a Christian and young man he noticed the differences in Bibles used by different Christian religions and became interested in this. During the early 2000’s while studying at the University of Idaho he one day visited a Catholic church where he encountered a campus youth minister who suggested that Brother Nathan read Dei Verbum, a Vatican II document that explains the origin of the Bible. This study was instrumental in Father Nathan becoming a Catholic at age 21. After graduation and teaching sixth grade he returned to Colorado Springs for a time to help care for his family during his father’s illness. He joined the St. Patrick community. In November, 2004, he joined the Knights of Columbus and Council #9993. He attended daily Mass, assisted with the religious education program, and made visits to parishioners at the request of Brother Knight, Deacon Dick Brown. Out of this grew his recognition of a calling to the priesthood. He describes his time in the seminary as a “meaningful experience”. During the pastoral assignments he has enjoyed assisting in the parishes, especially preaching when having the opportunity. Congratulations Father Hinds. Our prayers are with you!!

SK Taylor Lilly

A Fourth Degree Knight, Sir Taylor Lilly joined the order in October, 2001, at Sun City Ca. He continued his membership through five different councils as he moved about the country and is now a member of Council 9993 and Assembly 3049. He was elected Treasurer for Council 9993 2011-2012 and has served continually though this current year (4 years) He works closely with the Financial Secretary to insure that all funds are carefully and accurately managed. Sir Taylor has been innovative in working with the Financial Secretary and Grand Knight(s) in bringing a higher level of accountability and transparency to our financial record keeping. He also serves as Faithful Purser for Assembly 3049. For several years he has led the Council in two of our “signature” service programs. Sir Taylor led the Council’s effort in assisting worshipers at Christmas and Easter Masses in locating parking in and near the Parish parking lot. In assuming leadership of the Football Frenzy fundraiser he substantially grew the success of this program. He participates in numerous other Council activities including Tootsie Rolls, the parish picnic. the Council Free Throw Championship, the Council parking fundraiser at the USAFA, and our Council Family Picnic. At St. Patrick, he serves parishioners as Sacristan at the 5:00 PM Sunday Mass. He is just beginning his service on the Parish Pastoral Council. In the community Taylor shares his gifts in various ways. He is a head judge for the Southern Colorado FIRST Lego League, an annual competition of science-minded elementary and middle school students. The activities and projects involve robot building, leadership, problem solving, and teamwork. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the National Museum of WWII Aviation at the Colorado Springs Airport. He judges projects created by students up to high school age at the annual Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair. As Southern Vice-Chair for the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics he is active in the professional development of his colleagues. We are blessed to have you as a member of Council 9993 and Assembly 3039, and applaud you for your service and friendship.

SK Paul Miller

Sir Paul, a Knight of Columbus since August, 2001, is likely the best known by members of Council 9993 and Assembly 3049. He is truly a WORTHY Financial Secretary, serving members in this role for the 10th year (continuously since the 2005-2006). Paul is a 4th Degree Sir Knight, and also serves as Faithful Comptroller of Assembly 3049, of which he is a Charter Member. In these roles Paul is responsible for all member information at the Council and Assembly. He handles billing and collection of dues, and issuing of membership cards—all in a timely manner. He communicates and coordinates this information with the Supreme Council insuring that all member information is accurate. All receipts and disbursements go to and through the Financial Secretary. He and the Treasurer are the team that insures funds are carefully and accurately managed. In addition, Paul serves the State Council as Financial Secretary Chair. In this role he mentors and trains Financial Secretaries throughout the state. He is highly regarded for his expertise in Council matters! Paul has performed these roles professionally and competently. Many thanks, Paul! He previously served as Program Chairman for the Council. Paul was co-manager of fundraising activities at INVESCO field, our first significant fundraising activity several years ago. He continues to be involved in other council activities such as pancake breakfasts, dividing his time between K of C activities and volunteering at St. Mary’s High School. Paul and his wife Bridget are the parents of Allie and Ashley, both very good and active students at St. Mary’s High School. As a family, they are very active, both at St. Patrick Parish and at the school. We also recognize and thank Paul for 12 years of active duty service with the United States Air Force. Carlton (Greer) Bailey

In February, 2010, Brother Carlton, “Greer” Bailey was recognized at Knight of the Month. Now, five years later, Brother Greer has again earned recognition as Knight of the Month. Brother Greer continues to stand out as a Knight, and for many of the same contributions. He has a commendable record of service to Council 9993, its members, and its projects. Brother Greer is the engine that makes our monthly Newcomers Pancake Breakfast “go!” His many contributions include shopping for the needed food and supplies, contacting members to schedule volunteers for the two shifts, and serving as shift coordinator. His was a vital role in getting the parish kitchen renovation up and implemented during the past several months. These contributions he makes with his ever-present large smile. Other Council projects find their way onto his schedule. These include helping with the USAFA parking fundraiser and the Lenten fish fry. He jumped on board with the King Soopers Gift Cards. Brother Greer is a 3rd Degree Knight, having joined the Council in December, 2000. He and his wife, Rosemary, have three children. He is a retired Army veteran (Lt. Col.). Martin (Frank) Peck

As the Council looks back on the first half of the 2014-2015 year, the contributions of Brother Frank Peck stand out. He is recognized as January, 2015, Knight of the Month. At the beginning of the year our fundraising opportunity at the USAFA football games was in doubt. For several years this had been the Council’s largest single fundraiser and very much depended upon! As the year progressed the window of opportunity cracked open slightly but there were many hurdles, large and small, to overcome. Brother Frank led us out of the starting blocks by establishing solid relations with E-9 (the new organization with whom we would work) and helped previous and new Knight volunteers qualify for our team. The football parking season is now over, and with his leadership and persistence our members earned $3,611.00 in support of Council projects. Frank, always in great humor with a broad smile, was a great motivator -- and also a great influence on Mother Nature as we did not have a single day of bad weather for any of the games this season. He helped to make this activity more than a job, more than a fundraiser, but times of fellowship with brother Knights. He was instrumental in the tailgates—and his chili and brownies are famous! Frank is a third degree Knight. He first joined the order in 1964 and reactivated in 2007. In addition to his contribution as coordinator of the USAFA parking activity, Frank regularly assists with pancake breakfasts and the Mentally Handicapped (Tootsie Roll) drive. He served as Recorder for the Council. Frank and his wife Carole are active in the parish and community. Frank is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Memorial Hospital North, serves as Sacristan once a week at daily Mass, and participates in TMIY (That Man is You) men’s study and discussion every Thursday morning at 6:00 am. He and Carole also were instrumental in reviving Small Church Communities at St. Patrick Parish. Frank served in the US Army. Thank you, Frank, for all that you do, and for your contributions as a Knight of Columbus.

SK Douglas (Doug) Anderson

At the end of the 2014 calendar year we recognize Sir Knight Doug Anderson as December Knight of the Month! As we approached the end of 2014 and the holiday season when many families face financial stress, Doug was out in front of our council helping guide our efforts to assist those in need. Three years ago, Doug introduced us to the Supreme Council’s Coats for Kids program, and he spearheaded our council’s program again this year. Through his efforts and coordination, our council donated 2 cases of coats through the Saint Patrick Food Pantry and Catholic Charities of Colorado Springs. Every month for many years, he has prepared the two-month calendar of Council and St. Patrick Parish activities that is part of our newsletter. This printable calendar of council meetings and events, plus parish activities, is a great planning tool for our members. Council 9993 has a lot of activities, and SK Doug takes part in all them. He is a chief Grillmeister at picnics for the council and the parish. At the parish Oktoberfest, Doug is there dispensing good cheer. Likewise, for years he has been outdoors in our spring weather, deep-frying fish and spuds for the Lenten fish fry’s. Monthly pancake breakfasts – he’s there. Handing out Tootsie Rolls, working the Monte Carlo Night, and parking cars at the Air Force football games are a few of the fundraisers he has worked at. He is ready to help the parish with getting parishioners safely parked during the busy Christmas and Easter Masses. There are few activities in our Council in which you will not find SK Doug helping out either as a worker, organizer, or planner. In 2009, a series of transfers and personnel changes left Council 9993 without a Chancellor or Deputy Grand Knight. Doug stepped up to fill the DGK position, serving faithfully until July 2011. He acted as Programs Director, and published articles in the newsletter. Then he served two terms as Grand Knight, and is currently serving his second year as Trustee. During that time, he was a member of the Retention Committee. His leadership has been a major part of the council’s successful programs. During his two terms as Grand Knight, Doug led the council in revising the bylaws and in establishing a Legacy Fund, the income of which is intended to provide assistance to brother Knights and their families with special needs. As the end of 2014 approached, he was instrumental in identifying two families of Knights that Council 9993 helped using the Legacy Fund. The Legacy fund has also helped a Brother who needed a lift for his wheelchair, and another Brother needing a sidewalk for wheelchair access to his home. During Doug’s tenure, Council 9993 has always gotten State and Supreme Council reports turned in, helping us to gain recognition for accomplishments. Doug joined the Knights of Columbus in Feb, 2003, and advanced to 4th Degree. He is an active member of St. Patrick Assembly 3049. As a 4th Degree member, he participates in the Honor Guard for funerals, Corporate Communions, special Masses, and things like the Marian Hour of Prayer. Doug is also retired military with 22 ½ years of active duty with the U S Army. Thanks to you, SK Doug, for your service to family, church, friends, and country as demonstrated by your contributions as a Knight of Columbus.

SK Jim Wermers

Deputy Knight, Sir James “Jim” Wermers is recognized as Knight of the Month for November 2014. Sir Knight Jim joined the Order in January, 1980 in O’Neil, Nebraska. He advanced to Fourth Degree Knight in 1996. While a member of the O’Neil Council he joined his brothers in building a council hall. In past years Sir Jim and his family made several moves including stops in Colorado Springs. During these years his participation in the Knights was limited by the time he had available. During the last two to three years, as he approached retirement, his desire to become more active in the Knights grew. He has participated in almost all Council activities including the Lenten Fish Fry, USAFA parking fundraising, the Intellectually Challenged Drive, the “Monte Carlo Style” annual fundraiser, and the Council Family Picnic. As the time came to select Council officers for 2014-2015 approached, Sir Jim indicated an interest and willingness to accept a leadership role in the Council. He was nominated and elected to serve as Deputy Grand Knight, and is filling this role and that of Program Chairman admirably. Jim and his wife of 43 years, Joan, have three children and eagerly await the arrival of their sixth grand-child. Sir Jim served his country with the South Dakota National Guard. Congratulations and thanks to Sir Knight Jim Wermers for his friendship, service, and leadership.

Michael Cheshire

Brother Michael F. Cheshire is recognized as August Knight of the Month for his active and dedicated service to the members of St. Patrick Parish and Council 9993. He joined the Knights of Columbus in September of 2000, and is now a 3rd Degree Knight. As a Knight of Columbus and member of St. Patrick Parish he is committed to service in the parish. He is in his second year of service on the Parish Pastoral Council and took an active role in the parish-wide, Pastoral Council led, six month discernment process of the future direction and needs of the St. Patrick community. He also serves on the video ministry during Sunday Mass, and is a Fostering Hope team member. His service extends to serving on the That Man is You core team for the parish and participates in the weekly breakfast sessions. He has also taught in the religious education program for youth. Brother Michael has assisted as “grill-meister” in food preparation for the annual parish picnic. Once again, he will assist as a dealer at the Council Annual “Monte Carlo Style” benefit. Michael and his wife are married 25 years and have four children. He is an aviator retired with 25 years of service with the US Navy. Thank you, Brother Michael for your service and leadership to St. Patrick Parish and its members, the Knights of Columbus, and to our country.

SK Richard (Rick) Losey

Sir Rick Losey is recognized as July Knight of the Month for his active and dedicated service to the members of St. Patrick Parish, Council 9993, and Assembly 3049. Sir Rick joined the Catholic Church as a member of the St. Patrick RCIA Class of 2012. He immediately became active in the parish community. He served as sponsor to two candidates in the RCIA Class of 2013-2014. He also joined immediately in the weekly breakfast gathering of the That Man is You formation and fellowship pro-gram that meets at 6:00 am on Thursdays. He joined the Knights of Columbus in August 2013 and advanced to the 4th Degree and membership in Assembly 3049 on May 18, 2014. He has become an active participant and leader in the Council and Assembly. He was the chairman of the very successful July 29 Knights of Columbus $2 Tuesday at the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. He coordinated an excellent tail-gate—but did allow the game to get rained out after the tailgate was complete. He was also the grill coordinator of the June 20 Council Family Picnic attended by over 120 Knights and family members. He also assists with the monthly pancake breakfast and with Council support of parish functions such as the annual parish picnic. Sir Rick was elected to serve as the Council’s Worthy Chancellor for the 2014-2015 year and Assembly 3049 Outer Sentinel for 2014-2015. Married for 33 years, he is the parent of a son and daughter, and enjoys two young grandchildren. Sir Rick served in the United States Air Force. Thank you, Sir Rick for your service, fellowship, and leadership!

SK Mark Elio

Sir Mark is recognized for June, 2014, for his compassion for Brother Knights and his service to Council membership. Recently Sir Mark became aware that a retired priest and military chaplain in Colorado Springs had died. Through his diligent investigation the priest’s name was determined. His action made possible a 4th Degree Honor Guard of eleven Sir Knights at the priest’s funeral. Thanks, Mark, for participating in the Honor Guard, and for your part in causing this Honor Guard to take place, During this past fraternal year, Mark served as Worthy Lecturer. He provided the members short reflections, especially on the life and example of Pope Francis. Joining the Knights of Columbus in 1996, he advanced to the Fourth Degree as a founding member of St. Patrick Assembly 4039 and is an active participant in all Council and Assembly activities, projects, and meetings.

SK Ronald (Ron) Krom

Sir Ron is recognized for March, 2014. for his contributions to the Council and the Parish as Pro-Life Chair. He has kept the membership informed of news and information on the Pro-Life front via articles in the Knights Knews and short discussions at Council meetings. He has especially carried the message on the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil now taking place from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday on the sidewalks of Centennial near the Planned Parenthood facility. He has encouraged participation by the membership on Fridays (the day for St. Patrick Parish) and on Sunday (the day for the Knights of Columbus). He has led by example putting in many hours of prayer himself during this vigil. Ron is a true Catholic Gentleman and brings his special gifts to the members of the Order, Parish, and community. Ron is noted for his reasoned approach to situations that come before the Council. With his calm and faith-filled approach he has the respect of his Brother Knights, and is a pillar of the Council. Sir Ron currently serves as Deputy Grand Knight and Program Chairman. During the 2011-2012 fraternal year he served commendably as Lecturer. For several years he served as Knights Knews editor. During the past 12 months Ron took an active and leadership role in converting the Council to a new website. Sir Ron joined the Knights of Columbus in October, 1964, and is a charter member of St Patrick Assembly 3049. He has filled most leadership positions of the Council, including Treasurer and multiple terms as Recorder. He is a regular and dependable member of the Fourth Degree Color Guard, and served several terms as Assembly 3049 Purser. He is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at St. Patrick. He has served in numerous parish ministries including Food Pantry and Newcomers Committee. With his wife, Fran, he is a long-term member of a “small church community” at St. Patrick, a source of continuing faith formation and deep friendships. He frequently takes advantage of adult faith formation opportunities at St. Patrick. Ron served 3 years in the US Army, and is a Vietnam veteran. He remains active in the 101st Airborne Division Association veteran’s group. Thank you, Brother Ron, a Catholic Gentlemen, spiritual leader, and role model.

James E. McDermott

Brother Jim McDermott is recognized as December 2013, Knight of the Month, and 2013 Knight of the Year, for his service and contributions to Council 9993. He joined the order in 1954, but after several years became inactive. In November, 2010 he reactivated his membership, joining Council 9993. Shortly thereafter he advanced to 2nd and 3rd degree. Since the beginning of the 2013-2014 fraternal year, Brother Jim has assumed responsibility for all aspects of the Council’s monthly newsletter. He became the editor in September assuming the responsibilities from the newly elected Deputy Grand Knight. The newsletter was distributed to members in electronic format, and for those without e-mail, it was reproduced and mailed. A month after becoming editor he took over the reproduction and mailing of the hard copy version. Dissatisfied with the quality of reproduction of the hard copy he set about making improvements. He identified the number of members receiving the e-mail electronic edition and the number of members receiving hard copy. He discovered about 60 members were receiving the letter both ways—at a cost of $.46 each for postage. Further he discovered about 20 members were not even receiving a copy. He next set about developing a strategy for eliminating much of the mailed copy. Members were notified of this planned step at the end of December, and were advised that mailed copies would be eliminated in Febru-ary, 2014, except for special needs. This is also stimulating a drive to obtain e-mail addresses for all members. Although this effort is not yet complete, Brother Jim’s initiative is resulting in a greatly improved newsletter for more members---at reduced cost to the Council. Mert Ware

Brother Mert Ware is recognized for his service and contributions to Coun-cil activities since reactivating his membership and joining the Council in Au-gust, 2013. He first joined the order in July, 1981. He is a First Degree Knight. Brother Mert is committed to the Pro-Life cause. He is a participant in vir-tually all prayer and vigil activities that take place at the local Planned Parent-hood facility. He attends daily Mass and participates in the Holy Rosary be-fore Mass. On Tuesday mornings after Mass he joins parishioners that get to-gether for breakfast and fellowship. A member of the St. Patrick Homeless Ministry, he recently participated in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home. Mert attends and participates in Council meetings and activities including the monthly pancake breakfast. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War and retired from active duty in the United States Marine Corp with 20 years of service. Brother Rod Schumann is recognized as October, 2013 Knight of the Month for his service and contributions to Council activities since joining the Council in April, 2013. He first joined the ordered in February, 1976, and after some years of inactivity, he reentered on April 23, 2013. He is a First Degree Knight. Since joining Council 9993 he has been a regular participant in Council projects and activities. He is one of a cadre of volunteers that have made our fundraising activity directing traffic in the stadium parking lot at USAFA home football games successful. In addition to his skill in dodging oncoming traffic, he added to the success of the tailgates! It is a pleasure to have Rod Schumann as a Brother Knight. Thank you for your friendship and enthusiastic participation in our activities.

Vince Lardinois

Brother Vince Lardinois is recognized as August Knight of the Month for his leadership and service to the parishioners of St. Patrick in reviving the Lighthouse Catholic Media program of educational and inspirational CD's in the Parish. The program, a Church Activity of the Council, became dormant for several months. Brother Vince, upon being assessed of the situation of Lighthouse Media agreed to revive and spearhead the program. During the last year while Brother Vince has been shepherding this project, over 600 CD’s have been purchased by the Council, displayed in the special kiosk in the church foyer, and picked up by parishioners interested in learning more of their Catholic faith. The program is self-sustaining with donations covering the Council’s cost of the CD's. Brother Vince actively pursues living his Catholic faith. He is a regular participant in the monthly men’s breakfast at St Patrick, and is entering his second year of participation in the ”That Man is You” study and discussion program. A Third Degree Knight he joined the order in March 1996. He is a charter member of his first Council in Phoenix, AX where he held numerous leadership positions. He transferred his membership to Council 9993 when he relocated to Colorado Springs.

SK John A. Arpad

Sir John Arpad is an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, having served for 39 years. A Fourth Degree Knight, Sir John is a Charter Member of Assembly 3049. He has served with councils and assemblies in California where he first joined the Order, and at two councils and assemblies in Colorado Springs. We recognize Sir John for community service well beyond that of many Knights of Columbus. For the past five years he has served the National Association of Blind Athletes helping during the annual sports competition con-ducted in Colorado Springs. During the 2013 competition 19 countries were represented by 160 young athletes. In 2012 and 2013 Sir John volunteered at the Warrior Games, which is athletic competition among veterans who are a part of the Wounded Warriors organization. He is an Honorary Life Member of the DAV Auxiliary and active in Auxiliary Chapter 26. Sir John remains very active in Parish, Council, and Assembly activities. During his 39 years of service as a Knight of Columbus there are few Council and Assembly leadership positions in which he has not admirably served. Thank you, Sir John, for your many years of fellowship and service as a Knight of Columbus.
