Steve Taylor
This month’s Knight of the Month is Sir Knight Steve Taylor. While joining our order years ago and being a familiar face in our community, he is relatively new to active participation in the Council. Now, he has jumped in with both feet – he was elected Chancellor of the Council and Faithful Navigator of the Assembly. He courageously takes on tasks like coordinating the Fourth Degree Exemplification, which was held in our Council Home in mid-October. If you need inspiration to keep on hard charging, just look to Steve.

Bingo Volunteers
The August 2017 Knight of the Month is a group of Knights, that without them, our Council could not
continue in its current form. Choosing one Knight would leave out many that I am truly thankful for their time on Monday and Thursday. They tirelessly tend to many activities on these two nights. You can find them at the Bingo Hall early in the afternoon setting up and staying until after the last ball has been called making our fundraiser successful in many ways. I cannot be prouder of their efforts. Please find some time to join them to help ease their load. Congratulations to the Monday and Thursday Bingo workers on the Knight of the Month award for August.

Please join me in congratulating our June Knight of the Month, SK Thai Nguyen.
Clem Danish
One of the hardest decisions most every month is who to select as the Knight of the Month. The brothers of this council do so much and are always willing to help, so it often makes it hard to identify that one brother of the month. Not so this month, as this brother always excels to support our efforts, often working bingo and helping with the QA effort. He lobbies passionately to obtain additional volunteers for our Bingo, for SPRED, not only at OLMC, but all over. He also brought an idea forward to create Rosary cards to send to people as we say the rosary for them before meetings. I have taken his idea and worked with him, and I expect to have a printed product by the end of May for distribution in the council hall. Please join me in congratulating our May Knight of the Month - Sir Knight Clement Danish.
Rick Schirm
The Knight of the Month for April is no longer a member of our council, however this Sir Knight is always willing to serve, Immaculate Conception Church, our Council, his Council and the Assembly. Please join me in congratulating our February Knight of the Month Sir Knight Carroll Kelley.
Alberto Rios
As many of you know, Alberto took over the Janitorial contract last year. Due to his efforts, you can see a marked improvement in the state of the hall. He ensures that the building is prepared for the various events we hold, and often does many extra tasks to help the 5480 Club maintain the building. Even though some tasks are outside his responsibilities, he never asks for anything in return. Alberto also serves as assistant Lounge manager, helping Lew provide great Friday night events. You almost always see him volunteering at Bingo as well. Please take an opportunity to say thank you and congratulations to our January Knight of the Month, SK Alberto Rios.

Please take a moment this month to congratulate Dean Jernigan, our October Knight of the Month.
David Litzinger
Sir Knight David Litzinger, PGK. The Knight of the month for September works behind the scenes and out in
front to ensure the council runs smoothly. As trustee, he ensures that we are financially sound, but also gives
me advice and the benefit of his experience. He is always one of the first to respond to email requests for
information or advice. Even though his wife Mary is ill, he still finds time to serve at the parish and the council; in addition to his trustee role, he also serves as the church director for OLMC. He is also very involved in the church ministry to those with special needs. This ministry is close to my own heart as my sister Elizabeth has benefited greatly from t. Take a minute to thank our September Knight of the Month David Litzinger for all he does for our council, his parish and our community.
Jim Hooker
Our August Knight of the Month is someone who you don’t see at every meeting. However he is probably at the hall more hours than most. Jim has been the Bingo Manager for many years. He
works bingo nights and also weekends to ensure we meet all bingo reporting requirements. Recently with bingo proceeds down, several members met to discuss how to revitalize our bingo games and boost attendance. Quickly the new games were developed and new flyers printed. All done in about a month. The new games have been well received and profits are up. In addition to all his work for bingo, Jim is a catechist for RCIA and a Eucharistic Minister at the 10AM Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Jim was also previously on the parish council of OLMC. Please thank Brother Jim Hooker, our August Knight of the Month.

I have served on the degree team with him for a couple years now, and have benefited by his example. He is always volunteering for Bingo, and anywhere he is asked. I have never been refused when asking for assistance or advice. I would like to thank the July Knight of the Month Sir Knight Chuck Olson.
Steve Sprinkle
Our Knight of the Month for June is very active with Bingo and is truly a mainstay to keep Bingo flying. He is a caller and also a member of the committee trying to find ways to improve our Bingo games to help this Council. Jeff James
April’s Knight of the Month has been a stalwart volunteer in support of the Council’s bingo operations for many, many years. He is not only in charge of the counter operations, but he also sells instant cards on the floor when the need arises. He does this religiously, despite lower back and knee pains. Even though he does not like change, he enthusiastically championed the instant game changes that needed to be made for more money to be brought in for Charity. Through his efforts, the bingo operations will be able to provide more financial assistance to other charitable organizations. This Brother has shown a keen interest in the workings of our Council in his attendance at Council meetings and 5480 Club meetings. Please help me congratulate Brother Jeff James as our Knight of the Month.
Jerry Vorwold
The Knight of the Month for March is an avid bingo worker that very few people get to see. But the work that he does is still very important to the overall success of bingo. He shows up on a regular basis and counts the instant tickets in the back room. He always has a good word to say to whoever is in his presence. The amazing aspect about him, is how he squats to smoke outside of the lounge. He has a wealth of military knowledge to share along his knowledge of how a working farm actually operates. I think our Council is truly blessed to have Brother Jerry Vorwold as a member and he is our March Knight of the Month.
Bingo Workers
The Knight of the Month is being presented to a group of men, that without them, our show could not continue. I tried to choose one, but that would have many out that I am truly thankful for their time on Monday and Thursday. They tirelessly tend to many activities on these two nights. You can find them at the Bingo Hall early in the afternoon setting up and staying until after the last has been called making our fundraiser successful in many ways. I cannot be more proud of their efforts. Please find some time to join them to help ease their load. Congratulations to the Monday and Thursday Bingo workers on the Knight of the Month award for February.

Brother Tony and Crystal Rivera-Silva
On January 27, 2017 marked the 44th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. This event was a powerful example of what can be done with a peaceful protest. Many young and old people marched to show that we must protect the most vulnerable of us all. A great example of this commitment to life could be seen by Brother Knight Tony Rivera-Silva, his wife Crystal, and their three children all marching together. This was certainly a long day for the little ones leaving first thing in the morning and not getting home until well after 9 PM, but they were all smiling every time I saw them that day. Please take a minute to thank Brother Tony and Crystal for their example and congratulate them as our February Family of the Month.

He and Terri support almost every event from Fridays in the lounge to the many fund raising dinners. Either attending or volunteering, they always show their support. This is not however why I thought of them as Family of the Month for November. I had the great opportunity to share a long conversation with both of them this past month at the Hispanic Heritage dinner and I learned that they had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. This fact struck me deeply, to see their example of Christian Marriage, in this time when there are so many challenges to the sanctity of marriage, out of control divorce rates, and same-sex marriages. I felt we should all take a moment to celebrate this example in our midst of the love and faith shown by the Merendino Family. Please join me in congratulating our November family of the month, Tony and Terri Merendino.

They are truly worthy of recognition both in our Council and the whole Newport News community. Please help me congratulate Ted and Estelle as our Family of the Month for December.
Colleen Messier and Rose and Tyler Powell
They are usually seen wearing aprons hanging out in the kitchen. Every once in a while, they venture out to the main hall to receive a congratulatory applause on the meal of that event. They cover Friday nights for the Council with many, many events. You can receive a smile from them, and also how to properly run an event that is serving food. Chaplain Rev. Carlos Lerma and Faithful Friar Rev. Henry Diesta.
Congratulations to “Our Fathers” in Newport News, Worthy Chaplain Rev. Carlos Lerma and Faithful Friar Henry Diesta.
When Reverend Father Carlos H. Lerma was in his early 20s and looking for direction in his life, he went to his parish priest for guidance. At the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church he began helping minister to the poor in his small hometown of Buga, Colombia. After a year, he sensed that this was the life to which he was called. With the help of his pastor, Fr. Carlos immediately set in motion a path to the priesthood. It would take him 12 years to get there.
Today Father Carlos is the Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He is fluent in Spanish and English and serves as Chaplain of both Council 5480 and Council 11817. Father Carlos is a regular at council functions and will always remain behind to hear a confession. We are blessed to have Father Carlos.
Reverend Father Henry Diesta, a priest of the Diocese of Sorsogon in the Philippines, was appointed Pastor of St. Jerome Church in Newport News in 2009. Father Henry was well received into the large Newport News Filipino community and quickly adopted Council 5480 as his brothers. Father Henry spent his entire five years ministering to the Sir Knights of the Rev. Michael Bader Assembly as the Faithful Friar. Father Henry will be returning to his home Diocese this summer. We will miss you.

He is also serves in the role of Chancellor on the Council’s First Degree Team. He is Director of Technology Architecture at Endurance IT. SK Stephen and Donna Raschke
This Brother has been a member of the Order since November 1999. He could well be considered the “Poster Knight” for elected offices held. Since joining the Order he
has held every “chair” in the Council, has been a District Deputy and is steadily ascending the offices of our State Council, presently serving as State Warden with an
election to State Advocate pending. He strongly supports the Order and our Council although his duties as a State Officer (speaking engagements, serving as a representative throughout the state, etc.) limit his time with the Council. He is a member of the First, Second and Third Degree Teams. He and his wife still find time to attend most of the events held at our Council. His wife is very active in the York County School System and advocate of public education. They are actively in various
church ministries at Queen of Peace at Joint Base LangleyEustis. He is a retired Army CSM and presently a civilian employee at JB L-E. Please join me in congratulating
Stephen and Donna Raschke as our Family of the Month for April 2013.
Brother Theodore "Ted" and Estelle Langevin
This couple is the epitome of “love and marriage” at any age. Seldom do you see one without the other at an event or social gathering. Cheerful, happy, gleeful, pleasant are words that can describe them each time that one meets them. They always have a “happy” attitude. He rarely misses a Council or Assembly meeting and both are at most events held. He is always there when you need someone to help. He has been a member of the Order since March 1984. He is a sentinel in the Assembly. He coordinates and directs one of the most successful programs of the Council. The “Adopt-A-Spot” program (monthly policing of a section of Warwick
Boulevard) has won rave reviews, praise and awards from members of the Council and City officials. He is also proud member of the 4th Degree Color Corps where he gets the chance to showcase his flair for clothes. They attend Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church where they continue to be involved in various ministries. Although they have no “little ones”, they are very giving of their time and donations at our local schools. Please join me in congratulating Theodore (“Ted”) and Estelle Langevin as our Family of the Month for March 2013.
