Wheelchair Ramp Project
When a Holy Angels parishioner ask the office for help with a wheelchair ramp, the Knights responded. Thanks to the master craftsmen Brian Shustar, Bill Birch, Jim Griffin, Marty Wolding, and (gopher) Bill Dugan. Special thanks to Lowe's AND Pat Conlin for working with Lowe's for the deep discount on materials.
The plans, drawn up by Brian and materials needed. It was perfect!!!
Finished ramp from house.
Finished ramp to driveway.
Materials delivered Thursday 2/7/25.
Before construction. Kinda cold 2/8/25, temps in the 20's, high of 30, but no snow or freezing drizzle.
Sketched plans for construction.
Scoping it out.
Getting ready to attach to the house.
Making sure everything is level.
Boy is that porch slanted backwards, that's a big notch for those 2x8's.
Photos missing for digging the frozen ground, but the base is nearly ready to start screwing in the deck boards.
Lookin' pretty good, nice and level, within tolerance.
OK, that's done, gotta start working on the right angle turn to the driveway.
Oh no, the dog got out of the house. NOW you can see the frozen ground that was moved to the side.
Sorry buddy, you can't help without safety equipment.
OK, let's lay it out first. Measure twice, cut once, or something like that. MANY measurements were taken before cutting.
Making the turn, multiple cuts, deciding where to start and end. A great collaborative effort by the four musketeers, Brian Shustar left, Bill Birch right foreground, Marty Wolding looking good in plaid, and Jim Griffin finally getting a break (almost) holding the shovel.
Complex "fan" cuts to account for the curvature towards the driveway.
Three of the four workhorses, Brian Shustar, Marty Wolding, Jim Griffin, not pictured is Bill Birch who had to leave a little before the project was finished (99.9% anyway, still needs a couple tweaks).
Brian, Marty, and gopher Bill Dugan.
Rather than "Miller Time", it was hot showers, ibuprofen and Aleve time. Average age is 68.6. Where are those younger guys?

Smoothing out the bump. Hard to read the wording, but it says "HOME".
