Mr. OD Smith, age 93 passed away on October 1st 2017, at his home. He was born September 5, 1924 in Foxworth, Mississippi to Bettie and Percy Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on November 4th 2017 at 11:00 A.M. Celebrating the Mass will be Monsignor Zach Kunnakkattuthara. Graveside services will immediately follow the Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with military honors. A gathering of friends will take place from 10:30 until the time of the service.
Following the death of his mother when he was six weeks old, OD was raised by his maternal grandparents Rebecca and Daniel Webster Dunaway. He spent his childhood on their cotton farm in Foxworth Mississippi. He joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served as a Machinist in the Naval Air corps during World War II seeing action in Guam, Saipan and Tinian. After an honorable discharge, he attended Southeastern Louisiana State University in Hammond Louisiana where he graduated with a degree in accounting. It was in Hammond that he met Maryann Cacioppo a nurse who became his wife of 67 years.
OD held sales positions with Western Auto, Proctor and Gamble and Timberland Saw Company raising to the level of Vice President of sales. He was an avid golfer who always saved his best game for the many tournaments in which he participated.
OD and Maryann are not gone, their standards and caring ways are reflected in the lives of their surviving four children, Teresa Anne Sauer, Gregory OD Smith, Judilyn Wise, and David Kelly Smith; ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maryann; two brothers, Alton and Lloyd Smith; and sister, Lovette Smith.
