MONSIGNOR W.J. MAHER Monsignor William J. Maher, 79, who served in various cleric posts since being ordained in 1938, died of pneumonia Wednesday in Mercy Hospital.
Monsignor Maher, who lived in St. John Vianney Manor, was parochial vicar of St. Jerome Church in Charleroi from 1938 to 1949. He held the same position at St. Mary of Mercy Church Downtown from 1949 to 1954, and at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Midland in 1954 and 1955.
He was pastor of St. James Church in New Bedford from 1955 to 1961, of St. Michel Church in Pitcairn from 1961 to 1964, and in St. Jerome Church in Charleroi from 1964 until his retirement. He was dean of the Washington County Deanery from 1960 to 1977. He became a Monsignor in March 1968.
He is survived by six brothers: the Right Reverend Paul R. Maher of st. Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, and Roger, Richard, Leo, Robert andJoseph, all of Latrobe; and three sisters, Sister Rita Maher of the Sisters of mercy at Carlow College, and Regina Atkinson and Loretta Maher, both of Latrobe.
