Lewis E. West Sr. NORFOLK - Lewis Edward West Sr., 90, born Nov. 18, 1919, Pearl Harbor survivor, U.S. Navy retired, went to be with our heavenly father, Friday 13, 2010. Mr. West, better known as "Mae West," achieved the rank of chief gunners mate while serving in the U.S. Navy for 30 honorable years. He served on the USS Pennsylvania during the Pearl Harbor attack and will be remembered as a member of the Greatest Generation. His career never stopped even after retirement; he continued to educate the sailors through his devotion and love of the U.S. Navy. He also retired from ODU Bookstore after 15 years. Chief West is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jeanette G. West; two sons, Lewis E. West Jr. and wife Gary J. West and wife, both of Virginia. Chief West (Papa) is also survived by eight devoted grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a brother, two sisters, many relatives in Massachusetts, North Carolina and numerous friends during his long life. He was a devoted family man and loved by all who knew him. Chief West was a member of Lady of Victory Base Chapel and served as a Eucharistic minister. The family will receive friends at the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Chapel, Norfolk Naval Base, at noon Thursday, Aug. 19. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Those attending the service without military identification are respectfully requested to contact the funeral home (757-622-7353) to provide the necessary information to gain access to the base.
