Norfolk - Robert Arthur Kennedy, of Norfolk, VA, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2016 at the age of 92. He was born on July 25, 1924 in Doodletown, NY as the son of William E. Kennedy and Marie L. Sesnan. Following his high school graduation, he was drafted into the Army and fought in the European Theatre in World War II where he and his unit received recognition for liberating Antwerp, Belgium. Following the war, he continued his work in Civil Service at West Point, NY and as a member of the National Guard. On April 15, 1956, he married Natalie A. Carpenter of Highland Falls, NY and relocated to Norfolk, VA in 1963. He was an active member of St. Pius X Parish in Norfolk serving in the Men's Club and on the Parish Council. Following his retirement after 41 years in Defense Property Disposal, he served as a volunteer maintenance worker at Saint Pius Church and School and as a docent at the Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Natalie Kennedy in 2006. He is survived by his children Michael C. Kennedy and wife Kimberly, of Virginia Beach, VA, Melissa A. Jones of Norfolk, VA, and Maureen M. Hodges and husband Robert of Norfolk, VA, grandchildren Robert L. Hodges and wife Sarah of Moyock, NC, James T. Hodges of Norfolk, VA, Emily A. Jones of Virginia Beach, VA, Jessica L. Jones of Norfolk, VA, and Karalynn N. Kennedy of Virginia Beach, VA, and great granddaughter Audrey Hodges of Moyock, NC. The family wishes to thank the assisted living facility Gardens of Virginia Beach, for their wonderful care of Robert for the last six years and Interim Hospice for their loving and tender assistance during his final days. The family plans to hold a private service and burial will be at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.
