COUNCIL #731 - WAUKEGAN COUNCIL #731 REMEMBERS
WALTER J SCZYGIELSKI

Sczygielski, Walter John "Wally"

Loving father, caring husband and generous friend to many, Wally passed away peacefully, Monday, June 5, 2017 at home. Wally was 76, born May 4, 1941, at St. Therese Hospital in Waukegan. He graduated from Immaculate Conception Grade School and Waukegan Township High School. He was proud of his career at Commonwealth Edison, retiring as a Crew Leader after 42 years of service. Wally would oftentimes drive around Lake County, pointing out various buildings that he and his crew outfitted with electricity. His life stories were endless.

Wally was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Bettie) Schultz. Wally and Bettie married in 1966 at Holy Rosary Church and happily celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by attending a special Golden Anniversary mass at Holy Name Cathedral in September of 2016. Wally was the loving father of Lauren (Daniel) Anders and Andrew (Megan). His greatest joy (other than golf) were his five grandchildren: William, Claire, Anna, Maura and Thomas. Wally was also very proud of his Polish heritage, as both of his parents immigrated to America at the turn of the last century. He enjoyed participating in Polish cultural activities and could dance a mean polka. When Wally turned 70, family and friends surprised him with a Polish-themed birthday celebration. Sto Lat!

Wally was a man of many talents and interests and especially enjoyed being in service to others. He was a dedicated, 35-year member of the Knights of Columbus, Waukegan Council #731 and a Sir Knight of Bishop Quarter Assembly #197. He lived his service to others through the Knights by his involvement with fundraisers such as Fish Fries, Tootsie Roll Drives, Golf Outings and Polish Nights. He volunteered his time for many local causes he felt passionate about, including student athletics, animal rescue, political campaigns and religious organizations. Wally would easily drop everything for a friend or family member in need. His loyalty, compassion and competitiveness will never be forgotten. He truly loved playing golf, engaging in lively conversation, a good Broadway show and walking his dog, Oliver.
