Dr. Frederick H. Prellwitz, 93, of Kearney died Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at his home in Kearney.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. Father Art Faesser will officiate and burial will be at Kearney Cemetery. Military rites at the grave will be provided by the Kearney American Legion Post #52, Kearney V.F.W. Post #759 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Team. Visitation is planned Thursday from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. with a Wake service to follow at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. Frederick Herman Prellwitz was born May 12, 1923 at a farm house near Mahaska, KS to Julius and Mary (Nutsch) Prellwitz. He attended rural grade school then Morrowville, High School in Morrowville, KS graduating in 1941. He enrolled in the first class at Fairbury, NE Junior College, graduating in 1946. He was a WWII Veteran enlisting in the U.S. Army and served in the Occupation Force as a clerk in charge of Officers’ records in Germany from 1946-1949. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. After returning from his service he enrolled at Creighton University for pre-dental and later was accepted in Dental School, graduating with a DDS degree in 1955.
He married Evelyn Bartak at St. John’s Catholic Church near Clearwater, NE on September 6, 1952 and the couple moved to Kearney in 1955 and he practiced General Dentistry until he retired in 2003 at the age of 80.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #1728, Kearney Elks Lodge #984 and Kearney American Legion Post #52.
He was active in Boy Scouts, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 139 and had 18 boys become Eagle Scouts. He also received the Silver Beaver award. He was active in Habitat for Humanity and enjoyed golfing, hunting and especially the grandchildren. He has been an active volunteer for Community Action Partnership and Good Samaritan Hospital.
Survivors include his wife Evelyn of Kearney, NE; daughters, Janet (Phil) Mannhard of St. Louis, MO and Julie (Edward) Noethe of Council Bluffs, IA; sons, Daniel (Chris) Prellwitz of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Bruce Prellwitz of Hastings, NE and Cory (Julie) Prellwitz of Kearney, NE; grandchildren; Katherine (Matt) Helbig of St. Louis MO, Stephen (Jacquie) Mannhard of Boulder, CO, Patrick Mannhard of Spokane, WA, Michael Mannhard of Washington DC, Jared Prellwitz of Atlanta, GA, Graham Prellwitz of Springfield, IL, Emily Prellwitz of Denver, CO, Samuel and Benjamin Prellwitz of Kearney, NE and Clare and Jackson Noethe, of Council Bluffs, IA; great grandchildren, Conner and Paige Helbig of St. Louis, MO and Rose and George Mannhard of Boulder, CO; brothers, Paul Prellwitz of Fairbury, NE, LeRoy (Betty) of Morrowville KS; sisters, Mary Hays of Hesperia, CA, Marjorie Gregory of Reynolds, NE, Dorothy (Robert) Brown of Topeka, KS, Patricia Bennett of Seal Beach, CA; sister-in-law, Rozella Prellwitz of Reynolds, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Josephine and brothers, Bill and Leonard.
