Mr. Joseph J. Shanahan of Kenilworth, N.J., died Dec. 21, 2011, at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, N.J. He was 82. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend his funeral from the Opacity Funeral Home, 511 Washington Ave., Kenilworth, N.J., on Tuesday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m., thence to St. Theresa's R.C. Church, Kenilworth, for his Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, Kenilworth. Born in Jersey City, N.J., Mr. Shanahan lived in Kenilworth for 52 years. Prior to his retirement in 1995, Mr. Shanahan was employed with Jones-Loughlin Company of Kenilworth as a steel worker. Mr. Shanahan was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Knights of Columbus Father McVeigh Council 4186 of Kenilworth. He was the beloved husband of the late Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Shanahan; devoted father to Mr. Joseph Shanahan and his wife, Sue; Mr. Thomas Shanahan and his wife, Andrea; Mr. William Shanahan and his wife, Denise; Mr. Kevin Shanahan and his fiancee, Agnes; Mr. Michael Shanahan, and Mrs. Kathleen McInerney and her husband, Ryan, and cherished grandfather of eight grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Kenilworth Police Department PBA or the Kenilworth Rescue Squad would be appreciated.
