ANTON MACROWSKI

 

Born in North Chicago, Ill., where he spent most of his early years, he came to Florida in 1977.
In 1932, his interest in politics began with his election as Democratic party precinct committeeman.In 1935, he was elected city treasurer, a position limited to a four-year term.In 1939, he was elected alderman.
His municipal service was interrupted in 1944, when he was called to military service.After completing his extended Military Army Investigator training at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, he was transferred to Seattle, Wash., assigned to the Military Intel-ligence Branch as special agent, Division Port of Embar-cation.
He also served a limited time as special agent at Port of Prince Rupport, British Co-lumbia, Canada.
Discharged from military service in 1945, he returned to North Chicago to resume his unexpired aldermanic term.
In 1947, he was elected mayor of North Chicago, and continued as mayor for 12 years.
Mr. Macrowski held elective city office for 24 years, city treasurer, alderman and ma-yor, retiring as mayor in 1959.
In 1961, he was appointed by President John F. Kennedy as North Chicago postmaster.He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1971.
He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Homosassa; Knights of Columbus Council No. 731, Waukegan, Ill.; American Legion Post 397, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7081; and Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 25.
