GILBERT JOHN HEAPHY

 

Son of David E. and Hannah (Friekland) Heaphy. He graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1934, attended the University of Illinois, class of 1938. He played guard on their football team, and was recognized as the oldest letterman at a recent alumni gathering. He was employed by Commonwealth Edison, retiring in 1979. Mr. Heaphy joined the Knights of Columbus in 1936, and transferred to the Waukegan Council #731, where he served two terms as Grand Knight. He spent countless hours organizing youth programs in the community and supervised Squires and Squirettes, a KC program. He hosted sing-a-longs on Friday nights at the KC Hall for approximately 15 years. He sorted the slides, and manned the projector, yet couldn't carry a tune. He was a 4th Degree Knight. Gil played bridge to appease his wife, and he did enjoy traveling. He walked miles each day until he was well into his 80's. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (nee: Repp); a daughter, Kathleen (Mathias) Falcasantos; a son, Brian (Elizabeth Heaphy; a daughter in law, Diane Heaphy; step children, Kevin (Margaret) O'Grady, Peg (Kathy Lay) O'Grady, Michael (Kathy Rauch) O'Grady, Tim O'Grady, and Patricia (John) Kivlin. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Faye (Forbes) Heaphy; a son, David; and a great-granddaughter, Naomi.
