EDWARD J. SCARBALIS SR.

 

Deacon passed away on December 25, 2011. He was born on April 26, 1930 in Waukegan to Jonas Skargbalius and Ona Sacevicius, and was a life long resident of Waukegan. On September 24, he was united in marriage to Pearl Schultz at Holy Rosary Church in North Chicago.

Ed served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He became a registered member of St. Bartholomew Church in 1954 and also served as first Chairperson for St. Bartholomew School Board, a member of the Parish Council and a member of the Parish Staff. On April 26, 1986 he was ordained a Permanent Deacon at Holy Name Cathedral by Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Bernadin. He served in multiple ministries at St. Bart's after ordination, and was one of the original Deacons involved with administering Communion Services at the Lake County Jail. He became the Knights of Columbus Council Deacon and Council Chaplain with the retirement of Fr. Paul Cull. He was a member of the American Legion Post #0281, the Knights of Columbus 4th degree Bishop Quarter Assembly, Knights of Columbus 3rd degree Council #731, Zion Benton Moose Lodge #667, and the Telephone Pioneers.

He is survived by his four children; Edward (Janice) Scarbalis of Waukegan, David (Kathy) Scarbalis of Fairfax, Virginia, Stephen (Rochelle) Scarbalis of Gurnee and Barbara Corso of Waukegan. Also by six grandchildren; Matthew, Nora, Daniel, Michael, Benjamin and Amy, and two great granchildren; Matthew Jr. and Amelia, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Pearl on Feb. 22, 1980, after celebrating 25 years of marriage, and by his sister Helen Dragunas earlier this year.
