Robert Barnett Jr., 67, of Waukegan, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Hospice Alliance of Pleasant Prairie, WI, following a long and brave battle against cancer. Born on November 19, 1947, Bob attended St. Joseph's school and parish and graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1965, proudly bearing ROTC honors. He proceeded to earn a degree in psychology from Marquette University in 1969 before returning to Waukegan to work for Matthews employment as a placement counselor. Bob retired from Zion Benton Township High School in June of 2014 after 13 years of service as a paraprofessional, a job he loved as much for the opportunity to work with and develop young people as he did for his coworkers, so many, of whom became the dearest of friends. As a life-long resident of Waukegan, Bob will be remembered for his spirited civic participation, from legendary letters to the editor of the News Sun regarding any manner of Waukegan business, to his involvement with Knights of Columbus #731, Scoop the Loop and the rebirth of the Genesee Theatre, to name just a few. He was a devoted member of a community of parents at Immaculate Conception school and parish who volunteered time and treasure to ensure the best education experience for his children throughout their tenure there. He is survived by his three loving children, Keith (Danielle) Barnett of Portmarnock, Dublin co, Ireland; Ryan Barnett of Moline, IL; Kristen Barnett of Memphis, TN; and their mother, Gail Driscoll. He Also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren; Mason, Finley and Graham Barnett (Keith & Danielle) and Nora and Reese Barnett (Ryan). Also, dear friends Lynette Fuerst and Sandy Pokett, Bob's guardian angels on earth throughout his cancer fight. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Sr., in 1995, his mother, Anita, (Nuding) Barnett, in 1975 and an infant brother, Kenneth, in 1952.
