He was born on March 18, 1933, in Mahanoy City, PA, to William and Anna (Sabol) Rejuney. He grew up in the booming coal mining town of Mahanoy City, PA, where he was a member of Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church and attended its grade school. Joe was a 1950 graduate of Mahanoy City High School.
After graduating high school Joe enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 and moved to Great Lakes, Illinois where he completed boot camp. After boot camp he was assigned to his first duty station in Norfolk, Va on the USS Coral Sea. Shortly after being stationed in Norfolk he met the love of his life Jacquelyn Ann "Jackie" (Brown). Joe and Jackie were married July 23,1955. During his career he was also assigned to the USS Saratoga and USS America. Joe lived in multiple states along the East Coast including Rhode Island, Virginia and Florida. Joseph completed tours in the Panama Canal Zone, Antarctica where he completed two consecutive tours, and New Zealand. Joseph was a Plank Owner with US Naval Construction Battalion Unit 201 and a member of the McMurdo Society Deep Freeze 67. While Active Duty Joe received various medals which included Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze star, Arctic Service Medal, National Defense Medal with Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Navy Occupational Medal/ Europe along with Good Conduct for his full career in the Navy. After serving 28 years in the United States Navy Joseph retired as a Yeoman Chief Petty Officer.
After his career in the Navy he worked part time with the US Post Office, volunteered with the Cancer Society and March of Dimes. In the mid 90's Joe joined the Knights of Columbus where he participated in numerous local charity events including the Special Olympic, Bingo night, Family Dinner, Casino Night, Family Breakfast and Fish Fries during Lent. Joseph achieved the title of 4th degree Knight at Council 367 the first Council of the South. Along with joining the Knights of Columbus Joe also became a Depaul Hospital Volunteer for over 25 years. Joseph was the epitome of selfless love, he was a man of service, and a man of God.
Joseph is survived by his children Christopher Rejuney of Norfolk, Va, Thomas Rejuney of Norfolk, Va , Therese Earnest wife of Frank Earnest of Norfolk, Va, Charles Rejuney of Ft Lauderdale, FL, Carolyn Massengill wife of Gerald Massengill Jr of Chesapeake, Va, Paul Rejuney of Norfolk, Va and Joseph Rejuney II of Norfolk, Va. Joseph was a loving grandfather to Stephanie Weekley wife of Dustin Weekley of Virginia Beach, Va, Ashley Rejuney of Richmond, Va, Blair Kuhlman wife of Joseph Kuhlman Jr of Chesapeake, Va, Christopher Daly of Chesapeake, Va, Thomas Rejuney II of Chesapeake, Va, Travis Massengill husband to Melissa Massengill of Columbus, Ga, Jeremy Rejuney of Richmond, Va, Dalton Rejuney of Auburndale, Fl and Joseph Rejuney of Ramrod Key, Fl. Joseph was the proud great grandfather to Brent Ward of Chesapeake, Va son of Blair Kuhlman, Mackenzie Daly of Rudolph, OH, daughter of Christopher Daly, Jacquelyn Cason of Virginia Beach, Va daughter of Stephanie Weekley, Sadie Ward of Chesapeake, Va, daughter of Blair Kuhlman, Marshall Cason of Virginia Beach, Va son of Stephanie Weekley, Cooper Massengill of Columbus, Ga son of Travis Massengill, Brielle Daly of Chesapeake, Va daughter of Christopher Daly, Madelynn Kuhlman of Chesapeake, Va daughter of Blair Kuhlman, Amelia Rejuney of Auburndale, Fl daughter of Dalton Rejuney, Emmerson Massengill of Columbus, Ga, daughter of Travis Massengill, and Malcolm Rejuney of Auburndale, Fl son of Dalton Rejuney. Joseph was preceded into heaven by his wife Jacquelyn Ann Rejuney, son Robert "Bob" Rejuney and son Stephen Rejuney.
The family will welcome visitors at Hollomon-Brown, Great Bridge Chapel located at 524 Cedar Rd Chesapeake, Va 23322 on May 31, 2024 6pm - 8pm. The Knight of Columbus will be leading the Rosary at the viewing. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held June 1, 2024 at Christ the King Catholic Church located at 1803 Columbia Ave Norfolk, Va 23509 and graveside service will be held immediately following at Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery located at 3000 Church St Norfolk, Va 23504. The family invites everyone to join them for a reception located at the Knights of Columbus, Council 367 at 5201 Kennebeck Ave Norfolk, Va 23513 following the graveside service.
