GEORGE M FITZMAURICE JR

 

George Michael Fitzmaurice, Jr., of Goose Creek died Friday, June 20, 2003 at his residence after a long battle with idiopulmonary fibrosis. He was 75. Mr. Fitzmaurice was born Aug. 11, 1927 in North Java, New York and was the son of the late George M. Fitzmaurice, Sr. and Anna Davis Fitzmaurice. He was an alumnus of St. Bonaventure University, NY and Trident Technical College (TTC), N. Charleston, SC. Mr. Fitzmaurice was an instructor and served as the department head of Machine Tool Technology at TTC. He believed it was a privilege to teach and felt he always learned from his students. He retired from TTC after more than 20 years. Prior to his career at TTC he was with AVX (formerly Aerovox) in Olean, NY and Myrtle Beach, SC. While a resident of Myrtle Beach he coached little league baseball. He was an avid baseball player and golfer. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the SC Historical Society, the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the Oaks Country Club and Berkeley Country Club. He and his wife of 49 years, Valerie, were founding members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Goose Creek. He is survived by his wife Valerie Shepard Fitzmaurice, Goose Creek; three sons, who will miss his kind considerate spirit and guidance throughout their lives: Michael J. Fitzmaurice, Clemson, SC; Kevin P. Fitzmaurice, Savannah, GA, and Thomas J. Fitzmaurice, N. Charleston, SC; brother Robert Fitzmasurice, Phoenix, AZ; granddaughter Christy Fitzmaurice, Savannah, GA; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00PM Monday, June 23, 2003 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 100 S. Goose Creek Blvd. (Hwy 52), Goose Creek. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 510 St. James Ave., Goose Creek. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave. North Charleston. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Assoc., 1941 Savage Road, Suite 200A, Charleston, SC 29407.
