Mariano Selorio Acevedo was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He went with God on 2 February 2021.
Mariano was born on 3 Oct 1930 in Cebu, Philippines to Mariano and Oliva Acevedo. He and his wife Nelia were married 60 years and spent every day together. He was a proud and dedicated father and grandfather. The eldest of 9 children, he took it upon himself to look after his family in the Philippines.
He often spoke about his love for the US Navy and US Marine Corps, which gave his family new opportunities in the United States. He served 20 years as a Navy Corpsman and earned the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal with valor while serving in Vietnam from 16 Jan 1968 to 03 Jan 1969. He rarely discussed his tour, but his Vietnam Veterans baseball cap adorned his head nearly everywhere he went.
He was a simple man. He enjoyed watching football, fishing, crabbing, tending to his large garden, and buffets—probably because it was one of the few places his whole family could gather at one table. He also loved dogs, adopting several over the course of his life.
He was a founding member of Aklan Ati-Atihan USA, Inc., an Aklanon cultural organization, and has been a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Norfolk, VA since 1982. Any donations to Christ the King Catholic Church would be appreciated.
He is survived by his wife, Nelia; 4 children, Joy and her husband Michael, Marianel, Mariano and his wife Caroline, Floramay and her husband Charles; and 8 grandchildren, Elena, Andrea and her husband Andrew, Melissa and her husband Kyle, Jordan Marie, Ryann Elizabeth, Sean Conor, Ethan Michael, and Logan. He also is survived by his siblings in the Philippines: Elvira, Baltazar, Oliva and her husband Salvador, Alfredo and his wife Jovelita, and Linda and her husband Andres.
