Wirt Taylor Hicks Jr., 87, of Caroline County died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at his home.

Mr. Hicks served in the Phillippines during World War II and was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired as the postmaster of Rappahannock Academy. Mr. Hicks was also the proprietor of Betty's Inn. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth P. Hicks of Rappahannock Academy; five sons, Paul Hicks and his wife, Celinda, of Montana, Michael Hicks and his wife, Martha, of Richmond, and Tommy Hicks and his wife, Teresa, Chris Hicks and his wife, Rhonda, and John Hicks and his wife, Stacey, all of Rappahannock Academy; two daughters, Teresa E. Hicks and Patricia Osborne and her husband, Dave, all of Richmond; a sister, Betty Enos of Port Royal; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bowling Green.
