Knights of Columbus History & Charter of Council 6409

Knights of Columbus History

Founded by Blessed Father Michael J McGivney February 6, 1882 with the mission of charity in New Haven, Connecticut.  In the Late 19th Century, dangerous factory Jobs left many Catholic Families Fatherless.   Father McGivney recognized the need and gathered the men of his parish to establish a lay organization for Catholic men.

  • 1951-1960 “One Nation Under God” Knights of Columbus initiated a campaign in 1951 to adopt the phrase “under God” in the pledge of allegiance. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law in 1953 that officially added the words “under God” to the pledge of allegiance.
  • Membership today is approximately 2 Million members with members in almost every country in the world.
  • Knights of Columbus Insurance Programs with Universal, Permanent and Term Life, Long Term Care, and Disability Insurance. Retirement annuities are also available for our members.
