COUNCIL INFORMATION

WHO ARE THESE NEWMAN CENTER KNIGHTS?

Catholic Men grow by serving their family, Church, and community all while practicing their Catholic faith. Young men at UNLV look for a place to grow in their faith, and find it here at the Newman Center - where there is Mass, worship, faith-sharing, and fellowship. They are also seeking for what it means to be a man of God. When these young men meet a "Knight," they find a man of integrity and respect. He has a unique bond with his brothers, these men they call knights.

All the good works Knights of Columbus do are informed by the order's four core principles:

Charity – Our Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day.

Unity – None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that – together – we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together…we support one another. That doesn’t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that – as a Knight of Columbus – you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community.

Fraternity – The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died – often prematurely. The Order’s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do individual Knights, who last year gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another.

Patriotism – Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it’s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens.

IRON SHARPENS IRON

Brother knights and every Catholic man,

The UNLV Newman Center founded it's council during 2010 and is still in action to this day, but we are turning a new page. The past few years were rough, losing grip of our mission, but we are bonding back together this year with a vision and realistic goals. With the old and the new, we will serve our parish and community with more fervor, but most of all, we will form men into the real Catholic Men God calls us to be.

Young Catholic men visit the Newman Center everyday; new students flow through the doors every semester. Friendships are made that will last a lifetime. There is something that the men are seriously searching for though. It's other great Catholic men.  Men that set an example of true discipleship in Christ and service to others. They stand strong and ready against the world's ideology and culture based on relativism and self-gratification. These are the men who they will look up to. They are hungry for it, and the Knights of Columbus makes it our number one priority to be that man God has calls us to be.

Together, the Knights of Columbus at UNLV will set a path for future men to be knights in their vocations, families, parishes, work places, and future councils. Real men deep inside want to die for something that means everything they live for. They're looking for that. Let us show them, then, who died for us all.

I ask each one of you to join us, and help make this mission a reality as one Catholic Fraternity. What do you think God is calling you to do for His Church?

Vivat Jesus!
