The James C. Fletcher, Jr. Council 11422 of the Knights of Columbus was established on Thursday, September 15, 1994 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Largo, MD. The council is named after James C. Fletcher, Jr., a dedicated St. Joseph parishioner and a public servant of the Glenarden community and Prince Georges County, MD. Father Michael J. King, the pastor of St. Joseph, was very instrumental to the formation of the council and to reaching out to the men of the parish who helped the council come to fruition.
Thirty leading men of St. Joseph and surrounding parishes were recruited as Charter members by Father Mike and with the help of parishioners such as William Bell, Robinson Gary, Joseph Marshall and Judge William Missouri, the council began its long and illustrious history. Father King became the Charter Chaplain of the council and John Ramey was appointed Grand Knight. Bylaws were written in accordance with Supreme Council guidelines along with the duties of the officers, schedule of programs and meeting times. The first meetings were held at St. Matthias Church where Mother Seaton Council is located. The new council received tremendous support from current State Deputy Dale Trott and current State Advocate and then District Deputy Anthony Salvermini and grew exponentially due to the dedication and drive of its members.
As time marched on, and due to very successful recruiting drives, the membership of the council grew. The council now boasts 177 members. New programs were added to serve the parish and community as fresh ideas and new members brought excitement to the council. Grand Knights such as Robinson Gary, Carlton Williams and Deacon Leon Bechet helped create the Knightlife Newsletter, The Halloween Party and Mardi Gras. Subsequent Grand Knights, Program Directors and council members have also been instrumental in establishing The James C. Fletcher, Jr. Charities, the Youth Scholarship Fund, Youth Talent Show, Kite Flying, Altar Server's Dinner, Seminarian Support, Summer Flea Markets, Lenten Fish Frys, Knights on Bikes and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Squires Club. The council has always been and continues to be supported by our Lovely KC Ladies who have always stood by the council in all its endeavors and whose help has been invaluable.
Over these 25 years, the James C. Fletcher, Jr. Council 11422 has become known as the top council in the State of Maryland. It has received 12 Star Council Awards, Best Newsletter Awards, Program Director's Awards, General Excellence Awards, KC Ladies Awards, Columbian Awards, Best Lecturer Awards and has produced 7 District Deputies, 8 District Wardens, Color Commanders, District Marshalls, and a McNamara Chapter of Grand Knights President.
This council is forever grateful for the support of our past Pastors and Chaplains and for the dedication to the Knights of Columbus from our current Pastor Bishop Roy E. Campbell, Parochial Vicar Father Robert Boxie,III and Deacon Steven Nash. May God bless this council with another 25 years of service and commitment to the Knights of Columbus, The Supreme Pontiff and our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
