GRAND KNIGHT 2025 YEAR END LETTER

Brother Knights,

Thank you very much for a successful 2025. We received the Star Council award this year. As you know this is a difficult award to obtain and 90% of councils do not receive this award. Our Council continues to support two seminarians, Bret Zagar and Gabriel Epstein. The Auto Auction Fish Fry supports our education fund; Logan Doyle was our recipient this year. New this 2025, we also have added a new ministry, maintaining the church grounds.

We remember two Knights who have passed away in 2025, Mark Ariagno and former Grand Knight, Dennis Fadler. May the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Let us remember all the past Knights in our Council who have been a part in building up our Council. Yes, we Knights work hard, as do our families who make sacrifices as we continue the mission work for the Council. As per our mission statement, Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism, other Knights have stepped up to carry on the work of former Knights. Prayerfully, we shall continue to buildup and keep our council alive.

I ask you Brother Knights, as a Catholic man, what is your mission? Please, prayerfully, consider being a part of our Knights of Columbus Mission and participate in one of our many activities this year. The pancake breakfast, fish fries or spaghetti dinner would be an easy activity to get yourself acquainted.

I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year in 2026!!

Fraternally,

Gerry Cierpiot, Grand Knight

ASH WEDNESDAY 02/18/2026

In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the season of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

While Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, all Roman Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass on this day in order to mark the beginning of the Lenten season.

The Distribution of Ashes:
During Mass, the ashes which give Ash Wednesday its name are distributed. The ashes are made by burning the blessed palms that were distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday; many churches ask their parishioners to return any palms that they took home so that they can be burned.
After the priest blesses the ashes and sprinkles them with holy water, the faithful come forward to receive them. The priest dips his right thumb in the ashes and, making the Sign of the Cross on each person’s forehead, says, “Remember, man, that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return” (or a variation on those words).
A Day of Repentance:
The distribution of ashes reminds us of our own mortality and calls us to repentance. In the early Church, Ash Wednesday was the day on which those who had sinned, and who wished to be readmitted to the Church, would begin their public penance. The ashes that we receive are a reminder of our own sinfulness, and many Catholics leave them on their foreheads all day as a sign of humility.
Fasting and Abstinence Are Required:
The Church emphasizes the penitential nature of Ash Wednesday by calling us to fast and abstain from meat. Catholics who are over the age of 18 and under the age of 60 are required to fast, which means that they can eat only one complete meal and two smaller ones during the day, with no food in between. Catholics who are over the age of 14 are required to refrain from eating any meat, or any food made with meat, on Ash Wednesday.
Taking Stock of Our Spiritual Life:
This fasting and abstinence is not simply a form of penance, however; it is also a call for us to take stock of our spiritual lives. As Lent begins, we should set out specific spiritual goals we would like to reach before Easter and decide how we will pursue them—for instance, by going to daily Mass when we can and receiving the Sacrament of Confession more often

FATHER MCGIVNEY BEATIFICATION 10/31/2020

CURRENT PHASE OF THE CAUSE

With the joyous celebration of the Mass for Beatification, Father McGivney joined the rolls of the Blessed on Oct. 31,2020, in the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Conn. At that time, an Apostolic Letter from Pope Francis was read which recognized Blessed Michael McGivney’s humility, charity and concern for the welfare of all people. His beatification is a great boost to the priesthood and to the Catholic Church in America, and also for the 2 million Knights of Columbus throughout the world who look to the founder of the Order for inspiration, heavenly guidance and intercession for their needs.

The approved miracle involved the healing of a child in the womb from a fatal condition. While expecting their 13th child, Daniel and Michelle Schachle of Tennessee were told that the boy had Trisomy-21 (Down syndrome). A few weeks later, an ultrasound diagnosed fetal hydrops, in which multiple organs were filled with fluid. Doctors said that there was no hope of survival and abortion was the best option. As faithful Catholics, the Schachles refused abortion and began praying to Father McGivney for a miracle. An insurance agent with the Knights of Columbus, Daniel earned a trip to the Marian Shrine in Fatima, Portugal, and brought his wife for a prayerful pilgrimage. At Mass in Fatima, Michelle felt something change within her when she heard the words of Gospel about the Roman official whose son was healed by Jesus: “Go; your son lives.” A few days after returning to Tennessee, an ultrasound indicated that the unborn child was healed of fetal hydrops. Studied for years at the Vatican, the healing was declared miraculous by medical and theological experts. Today, Michael McGivney Schachle is an active 5-year-old, with Down syndrome, who is surrounded by a loving family.

As Supreme Knight Carl Anderson reported to the Supreme Convention in August 2020, the miracle underlines Father McGivney’s vision and mission:

  1. The family’s rejection of abortion corresponds to the Order’s longtime pro-life commitment.
  2. The diagnosis by ultrasound highlights the K of C Ultrasound Initiative, which has placed more than 1,200 machines in pro-life pregnancy centers, saving numerous lives.
  3. The family’s acceptance of a child with Down syndrome is in keeping with the Order’s long history with Special Olympics and children with developmental disabilities.
  4. The large Schachle family that values the Catholic faith underlines the importance of the domestic church.
  5. Daniel’s job as an insurance agent carries on Father McGivney’s goal of protecting Catholic families for generations.

Question:
What is the difference between saints and blesseds?

Answer:

There are several steps in the Church’s process of declaring someone a saint. From first to last, the corresponding titles are Servant of God, Venerable, Blessed, and Saint. “Blesseds” are those who have been beatified. Beatification requires one attested miracle and allows the beatified person to be venerated by his local church. Canonization requires two attested miracles and allows veneration of the saint by the universal Church. Canonization is an infallible statement by the Church that the saint is in heaven.

SPREADING THE GOSPEL

GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC CHURCH SMITHVILLE, MO

PRAY FOR US

O GOD OUR CREATOR,

from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome— for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us— this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

KANSAS CITY COMMUNITY BLOOD CENTER 2024 AWARD

A generation of Kansas Citians has grown up with Community Blood Center (CBC). They know if they, or someone they love, needs blood in an emergency, CBC makes sure it’s available. But that hasn’t always been the case.

Over 60 years ago, there was no centralized blood collection and distribution agency to serve the greater Kansas City area and its surrounding counties. Instead, hospitals had to collect their own blood. If you needed blood, you had to rely on the kindness of your friends and relatives to donate blood on your behalf. Your life was in jeopardy if there was a blood shortage in your area or you had a rare blood type. That is why a group of community-minded physicians, hospitals, and civic leaders decided to organize Community Blood Center to serve the needs of patients in the community and to save lives.

Community Blood Center, circ 1958
Community Blood Center opened in 1958 at its present address, 4040 Main St.

Since opening in 1958, over 800,000 patients have received blood donated at CBC locations. CBC provides blood products to over 70 hospitals in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area, eastern Kansas and western Missouri. In addition, CBC provides high-quality reference immunohematology laboratory services, including platelet and red blood cell antibody testing, and therapeutic apheresis to local hospitals.

It is through the commitment of volunteer donors that CBC is able to maintain its heritage of service to our community.

COMMON SENSE PRAYER

We are not called upon to do all the good possible, but only that which we can do. Occupy yourself less about yourself and more about God. It is not enough to acknowledge our faults; we must correct them. Profit by the experiences of the past for the future. You will be happy in making others happy.

In the accomplishment of good we must show forth in our every act a perfect justice.

Do not require of everybody the same virtues and qualities. Bear with the defects of others. Endeavor not to cause others to suffer and you yourself try to endure the little annoyances which are unavoidable in the necessary relations with others.

Charity does not consist in loving one or two persons and being indifferent to all the rest.

If we love our Lord with our whole heart, if we serve him faithfully, we shall be happy even in this life.

To love in the right way is to accomplish the whole Law; it is to begin that happy life which will have its perfection only in heaven, where we shall live forever with a holy and perfect love.
