Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest for Students in Grades 8-12

We are excited to launch the Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest for students in Grades 8-12.
 
All essays must be turned-in by close of business, Tuesday, November 29, 2022, along with entry forms.  

2022 - 2023 ESSAY TOPIC

In an essay of 500- 750 words, explain how young Catholics can evangelize our faith to families and friends who have turned away from religion and encourage them to return to the Church and embrace the sacraments.

HOW TO ENTER

Preferred method: Turn in essay(s) and completed entry form(s) in the marked box located in the entrance to the St John the Apostle Parish Center.
Alternate method: Email essay(s) and completed entry form(s) in PDF format to email. 
 
All winning essays will receive a certificate, and advance to competition at the District level, and potentially to the State and National level. 
 
The winning essay at our Parish will receive a $25 gift card.

We are excited to launch the 2022 Keep Christ in Christmas (KCIC) Poster Contest.
 
All posters must be turned-in by close of business, Tuesday, November 29, 2022, along with entry forms.  Children may enter more than one poster, but each requires a separate entry form.
 
There will be a box in the entrance to the Parish Center to drop off your posters & forms located at 101 Oakcrest Manor Drive NE,  Leesburg, VA 20176
 
All winning posters judged at the Parish/Council level will receive a certificate and a $25 gift card!

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS POSTER CONTEST RULES – GRADES K – 8

TOPICS/CATEGORIES
Each poster must reflect the Keep Christ in Christmas theme with a visual image. There is no limit to the number of posters each contestant may submit.

AGE GROUPS
Contest entrants compete in one of three age groups — ages 5 through 7, ages 8 through 10 and 11 through 14. Each Council, District, or State competition may have up to 3 winning entries — a first and second place winner in each age group.

CONTEST LEVELS
The Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest will consist of up to four levels of competition: council, district, state and international. Below is a description of each to help you understand the progression of the program.
Council — this is the first level of the competition. Posters must be submitted no later than close of business December 6, 2021. Posters will be collected at the St. John The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, Parish Center, 101 Oakcrest Manor Dr NE Leesburg, VA 20176, The winning posters from the Holy Family Council #6831 level competition are forwarded to the district deputy.
District — the district level of the contest occurs only if more than one council in the district participates in the Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest. The winning posters for this level of the contest are forwarded to state program personnel for State competition.
State – the State level of the contest occurs at the Mid-Year Meeting in January 2022. All Entries must be received by midnight 19 December 2021.
International – the International contest is held by Supreme. Winning entries as determined at the State level will be forwarded for further competition prior to Supreme entry deadline.

RULES
Poster must reflect the theme of Keep Christ in Christmas. Each poster should be the original work (including concept, layout, slogan and any visual images) of a single person. Poster should be approximately 11x17 inches. However, the Supreme Council will not disqualify based on poster size. If pastels, chalk or charcoal are used, the poster must be laminated or covered with clear plastic. Each poster must be submitted with a Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest entry form. Make sure your council number 6831 is included.

How to Enter
Email is Not an acceptable way to enter a participant’s poster. USPS is not advisable due to unreliability in delivery time. Late entries will not be accepted for entry into the competition
The name and age of the entrant should be printed on the reverse side of the poster in case the poster and entry form get separated. All entries become property of the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council office. Posters cannot be returned.

JUDGING: a 100-point scoring system will be used to determine the winners. Slogan — 30 Points: How clearly is the theme presented? Visuals — 30 Points: How well do the visuals convey the message? Overall impact — 40 points: How effective was the poster in capturing your attention and causing you to reflect on the topic at hand?

Awards
International — $250 is awarded to the first place entry for each age group. Two runner-up prizes of $100 each are also awarded for each group. All international winners receive a framed certificate signed by the supreme knight and the winning 11-14 category design may be used in the promotional poster for the contest next year.
