Knights of Columbus Council 14425 " Helping Hands Program"

The Knights of Columbus was founded on the principle of charity and caring for the widows and orphans of brother Knights.  Not all charity from the Knights is in the form of money.  Council 14425 has decided that we as Knights should do something meaningful for the widows of our parish, not only the widows of our Council but all widows and disabled members of the parish.

Our Council is blessed with a group of qualified men who have experience doing jobs that the widows and disabled of our parish may need assistance with.  Accordingly, Council 14425 is offering a handyman service to be of help to the widows and disabled.

We can perform small jobs around the house that generally do not require a licensed tradesman. All work will be performed at no charge for labor, but the recipient will furnish all materials.

Examples of work that can be performed by our team include:

  • Replace light switches and outlets
  • Replace hard to reach light bulbs
  • Replace smoke alarms and batteries
  • Replace ceiling fans
  • Light carpentry work
  • Touch-up painting
  • Screen repairs
  • Light plumbing repairs
  • Winterization of wells and water lines
  • Planting/moving of shrubs and flowers
  • Furniture moving

Examples of work that we cannot perform include:

  • Major roof repair
  • Gutter cleaning
  • Major electrical work
  • Major plumbing work
  • Complete inside or outside painting jobs

We have 13 volunteers for our Helping Hands Committee.  Depending on availability of our committee members, we will do our best to respond to requests for assistance within one-week of submission.  A minimum of two Knights will go to any recipient’s home to assess work to be done and there will be at least two Knights in the home when work is performed.

Please submit requests for assistance kofc14425@gmail.com   Once received, our committee will coordinate a date and time to assess and then perform the work.

St. Anna’s Knights Receive Top Awards at State Knights of Columbus Convention

At the State of Georgia Knights of Columbus Convention, St. Anna’s Catholic Church Council #14425 received the winning 2019 Annual Award for “Service to the Family”. The Council honored St. Anna’s congregation’s military veterans by dedicating its “Veterans Wall of Honor” with pictures of over 200 photos of the family’s military veterans, along with a dedication and a mass. Don Williams, Grand Knight and Wylie Stokes, Deputy Grand Knight, Bob Gaubert and Gerald Landkamer accepted the award for the Council.

In a separate recognition, Bob Gaubert received the coveted 2019 Georgia State “Knight of The Year Award” for his leadership, dedication and service to the Knights of Columbus Organization and to St. Anna’s Parish. Mr. Gaubert was selected for this singular award from a group of over several hundred submissions for the award.

St. Anna's Youth Group and K of C Council #14425 Unite

St. Anna’s K of C Council #14425 realized the Youth Group is essential in growing Faith within the Church and Community through involvement and introduction to the Knight of Columbus Organization.

St. Anna’s Youth Group knows the Knights though their association and interactions, requested involvement in the planning and building of a GaGa Pit (Arena Dodge Ball).  The Youth Group presented a concept plan in May of 2018 to our council requesting assistance from the Knight to work with them in the building of the GaGa Pit.

The council accepted the challenge and over a period of six months, committed to the building of the GaGa Pit to include the design architecture, material list, manpower, and the preparation of the grounds needed. A budget was established, and the Knights allowed the Youth Group to run one of its Trivia Nights as a fund raiser, allowing all proceeds to the project.  Through advertising and promoting the event to the church parishioners, Trivia Night was successful in raising the funds needed for the project.

A plan of action was established for February’s 2019 installation of the GaGa Pit.  Through the efforts of Lowe’s Home Improvement which discounted the cost, offering their services, the GaGa Pit materials were purchased and delivered. On several Saturdays in February, the Knights working alongside the youth group prepared the grounds for the building of the GaGa Pit, to include the final installation.

In early March, till today, the Youth Group has enjoyed the GaGa Pit, setting up tournaments amongst themselves. Immediately, due to the number of the players and the age of the younger youth, another GaGa Pit is under consideration for development. Truly, this project energized the youth participation in this game sport.  It provided a safe outlet for the youth group to enjoy each other’s company while getting physical exercise and friendly competition.

Working together the Knights and Youth demonstrated another positive reinforcement of togetherness in support of each other.

GAGA Ball Meaning:  GaGa Ball is believed to have originated in Israel. Ga means "hit" or "touch" in Hebrew. In the rules of GaGa ball, the ball must touch the ground two times before it is considered in play, hence the name.    https://patch.com/georgia/monroe-ga/st-annas-youth-knights-columbus-unite

St. Anna’s Catholic Church Honors its Military Veterans

On Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11, St. Anna’s Catholic Church in Monroe, Georgia, honored its congregation’s military veterans by dedicating its “Veterans Wall of Honor”.  Spearheaded and solicited by the Knights of Columbus, Council 14425, the church’s parishioners submitted over 200 photos of their families’ military veterans.  The Knights did the rest by processing, printing, framing, and displaying the pictures on the Wall of Honor for the congregation to review. The Veterans Wall of Honor will be up for a three week period.

St. Anna’s Color Guard composed of military veterans in uniform placed the American flag on the altar, and the congregation recited the pledge of allegiance.  Dignitaries from Georgia’s State Knights of Columbus and all veterans present were recognized. The offertory gifts were brought to the altar by the veterans.

Robert Costantino, a Knight and Veteran, discussed his personal perspective for service in the military, and related how today’s citizens must support our nation by volunteering for service consistent with its defense needs and the maintenance of our freedoms.  All veterans were asked to stand by Father Dan to receive a special blessing.  A reception of coffee and donuts followed in the parish hall.

Congress is set to vote in the coming days on three important pro-life measures

Dear Brother Knights,

Congress is set to vote in the coming days on three important pro-life measures. In the House, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act (H.R. 3134) would put a one-year moratorium on funding for the organization unless it agrees to abandon its abortion practice. Also in the House, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (H.R. 3504) provides federal criminal and civil penalties for failing to provide care to an infant who has survived an abortion attempt. Next week, the Senate is expected to take up the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (S. 1553), which bans abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, the point at which experts agree that the unborn feel pain.

Please contact your elected representatives in support of these measures. Click here to take action on the Defund Planned Parenthood Act (H.R. 3134) Click here to take action on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (H.R. 3504) Click here to take action on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (S. 1553)

At the heart of these three pieces of legislation is recognition of the dignity of the unborn child. In the past several weeks, through the release of several undercover videos, the United States has received a distinct call to reexamine its conscience regarding abortion, which claims the lives of over a million unborn children every year in this country. As you may know, most of the videos show or explain some aspect of the harvesting of organs for monetary compensation, including the grisly details of how these organs are extracted from recently aborted babies, many of them late-term.

Congress has held two hearings, one in the House Judiciary Committee, and one in the Energy and Commerce Committee, investigating the practices of Planned Parenthood and shining a light on this disregard for human life.

I was moved recently to see this video interview of Utah Congresswoman Mia Love discussing the Planned Parenthood videos: “Here we are in the United States of America, and our job is to protect life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—first and foremost life,” she said.

There simply is no good reason for taxpayers to fund Planned Parenthood or any organization that performs abortions.

Thank you for all you do in support of the dignity of human life.

Vivat Jesus!

We also have a new council identified -Georgia Regents College - and through the efforts of DD Karl Stevens and NCD Chairman Mike Boden, we are working to bring this college council in during the Fall. We also have several other new council targets identified.

State Roundtable Chairman John Jedlicka sent letters to all roundtable coordinators encouraging them to get their 2014-2015 roundtables renewed for 2015-2016. If you know of a roundtable opportunity in your council, contact John. Roundtables provide an excellent opportunity to pave the way for a new council.

Along with all of our elected delegates, I recently returned from the Supreme Convention in Philadelph-ia. I wish that every Brother Knight could have the opportunity to attend the Supreme Convention. If they did, we would not have a recruiting or retention problem in the order. The Masses alone are beauti-ful and the States Dinner is a wonderful celebration of the fraternity and diversity that exists in our order. Here are some highlights of the Convention:

The Supreme Knight’s theme for the convention was "Endowed by the Creator with Life and Liber-ty." Many of the presentations reflected this central theme.

The family was a central focus of the opening Mass and will be a central focus for the entire frater-nal year. The Supreme Knight gave all State Deputies a Holy Family traveling icon that will route through each jurisdiction this fraternal year. Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori will de-vote most of his articles in Columbia magazine to the family unit.

The Catholic League is the nation’s largest Catholic civil rights organization

Father Dan spoke about the Catholic League at our recent Knights of Columbus and our responsibilities as Knights to support this Catholic civil rights organization.

What is the Catholic League?

The Catholic League is the nation’s largest Catholic civil rights organization. Founded in 1973 by the late Father Virgil C. Blum, S.J., the Catholic League defends the right of Catholics – lay and clergy alike – to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination.

Motivated by the letter and the spirit of the First Amendment, the Catholic League works to safeguard both the religious freedom rights and the free speech rights of Catholics whenever and wherever they are threatened.

The Catholic League is listed in the Official Catholic Directory and has won the plaudits of many bishops.

Is the Catholic League Necessary?

And today’s brand of anti-Catholicism is more virulent and more pervasive than ever before in American history. While it is true that Catholics as individuals have made progress in securing their rights, the degree of hostility exhibited against the Catholic Church is appalling. Quite simply, Catholic bashing has become a staple of American society.

How Do I Join?

Click on this link to complete form and fill in the membership and payment information, then mail it back to the Catholic League, or, follow instruction on the application to submit electronically.  http://catholicleague.org/xcart/home.php?cat=250

We will send you Catalyst, the League’s journal, and let you know of various league activities in your area.

By joining the Catholic League you become part of the most influential lay Catholic organization in the country. You are integral to our mission and our mission is integral to the mission of the Catholic Church.

Alex Wieczorek Chosen for 2015 Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston, MA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Alex Wieczorek Chosen for 2015 Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston, MA MONROE, GA — Alex Wieczorek, a 9th grader at Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School of Athens has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston, MA on June 28th - June 30th, 2015. Alex, son of Michael and Daniela Wieczorek, is a 2014 local Knights of Columbus Scholarship recipient.

The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be scientists and technologists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.

Alex Wieczorek was nominated by American hero and astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Science Director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists to represent Georgia based on his academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology.

During the three-day Congress, Alex Wieczorek will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading scientific research; be given advice from deans of the world's top tech universities; be inspired by fellow teen science prodigies; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future of science and technology.

"This is a crucial time in America when we need more nimble-minded and creative scientists and technologists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists. “Focused, bright and determined students like Alex Wieczorek are our future and he deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give him.”

The Academy offers free services and programs to students who have the desire to learn more about their future in science or technology. Some of the services and programs the Academy offers online social networks through which these future scientists and technologists can communicate; opportunities for students to be guided and mentored by tech and science leaders; and communications for parents and students on college acceptance and finances, skills acquisition, internships, career guidance and much more.

The Academy was founded on the belief that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education plays a critical role in enabling the United States to remain the economic and technological leader of the global marketplace of the 21st century and that we must identify prospective talent at the earliest possible age and help these students acquire the necessary experience and skills to take them to the doorstep of vital careers. Based in Washington, DC and with an office in Boston, MA, the Academy was chartered as a nonpartisan, taxpaying institution to help address this crisis by working to identify, encourage and mentor students who wish to devote their lives to advances in society as scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.
