Basic food registration form Aug.2019

registration form

Attached is an Onsite Basic Food School Registration Form.  Let me explain.  All church organizations that sell food in any form must now be trained in proper food handling practices.  The cost of the training is $20 a person and I must have at least 20 people to commit to this training for the  trainer to come to our social on August, Monday 19th at 7:00 pm at the KC Hall.  The council has agreed to cover half the cost of the fee for Knight members so your out of pocket cost will only be $10.  For those interested in obtaining your certification, I need you to respond to this email and you must complete the attached form and bring it with you to the social.  I only need you to respond to this email if you are committed to complete this training as I need to keep track of the numbers to ensure we have the 20 participates needed.  This training is vital to our fundraising efforts such as fish fries, BBQs, tamale sales, soup kitchen, hamburger dinners, etc. As you know our next food fundraiser is the BBQ.  We do not need to procrastinate in getting this issue addressed.  This training is open to anyone in the parish.  It is open to both the Catholic Daughters and Squires.  Please respond if you intend on participating by Monday, August 12th to make sure proper arrangements are made. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Christmas Day Dinner

786 people were fed Thursday during St. Joseph’s Catholic Church’s annual Christmas Day dinner.

The Msgr. L.L. Meyer Knights of Columbus Council 1422 and St. Joseph’s Parish teamed for the ninth year to serve the meals, which consisted of traditional Christmas fare of ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls and dessert. “Everything has gone well,” said the Rev. Denzil Vithanage, pastor of St. Joseph’s.

Bill Elliott, master in the local Knights of Columbus and one of the coordinators of the event, said he believed that by the end of the day they would have served close to 800.

“We have had around 90 volunteers to come and help us with the prep work and the serving today, which is just amazing … to find that many people willing to give up their Christmas is amazing,” Elliott said.

By noon, he estimated 263 meals were delivered to residents and 284 meals were delivered to local law enforcement officers, firefighters and to inmates at the Harrison County Jail. People were still arriving for lunch after 12:30.

Elliott said the group feed 797 people in 2013, which was an increase from 2012 when they fed 640 people.

In 2007, 456 meals were delivered, while 508 were delivered in 2008 and 583 meals were delivered in 2009. In 2010, 530 meals were delivered. The number in 2011 was not available.

“Spiritually, this has just touched me so,” Vithanage said. “The people in Harrison County have a great generosity and big hearts, as they just pull together to help the need, and take care of God’s people.

“We are truly keeping Jesus in Christmas and following his mission – that every person is ‘Jesus incognito.’”

Fifty volunteers had showed up by 10 a.m. Christmas morning to begin the work of prepping the food for delivery.

“I am so grateful to the Knights of Columbus for taking this challenge on,” Vithanage said.

He said the Knights earned a first-place award at state and fourth-place award at international for feeding so many people.

David Zeigler, a member of the Knights of Columbus, said Golden Corral donated the rolls, Trinity Episcopal Church provided the desserts, and Walgreens donated the bags for delivery.
