Brother Norman Jones Elevated To Honorary Membership
Congratulations to Norm Jones for his elevation to Honorary Membership! Members who have attained the age of 65 years and who have been members for 25 consecutive years are designated as honorary members.
On August 7, 1954 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Norm was born a “blue baby” due to oxygen deprivation in utero. The doctors said he’d never graduate high school. An Air Force son, Norm moved frequently, including stints in Germany (grades 5-7), Turkey (grade 10), England (grade 11) and finally Tampa (grade 12). Proving the doctors wrong, Norm not only graduated high school with a 3.0 GPA (Robinson ’72), he also went on to obtain two college degrees in accounting and teaching. Since then, Norm has had a variety of careers over the years, including baseball umpire, accountant and finally retiring from Macy’s in 2016 after a 25-year tenure. He’s also a proficient bowler with a 265 high game.
Norm converted to Catholicism in 1976 and became a Knight at age 24 in 1978 (20 years before our council was even founded). He served as the Blood Bank Chairman for the Holy Rosary council for 20 years, during which time he donated over 13 gallons of blood. It was at the KofC Bingo Hall on Cypress where Norm met his first wife, Roseann. During this time, he held several positions, including Financial Secretary, Deputy Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator of his Fourth Degree Assembly.
During the 90s, Norm was a member of Our Lady of the Bay, St. Joseph, and finally St. Patrick councils, holding various officer positions. In 1994, Norm fell 60 feet off a pyramid in Mexico, suffering a broken back, head injury, 9 cracked ribs and other injuries, with the closest hospital 150 miles away. If you sometimes notice him walking with a slight limp, keep in mind it was a miracle he survived. Two years later, Norm wed his second wife, Doris, a former RN. Norm and Doris were married for 19 ½ years until her passing in 2015.
Norm was Grand Knight of the St. Patrick Council in 2005-2006, during which time the council earned the Star Council Award. The following year, he was welcomed into our Christ the King Council and has been a consistent presence, serving various roles, including Tootsie Roll Drive Chairman and long-standing Welfare Chairman. Norm has enjoyed his 40+ years as a Knight, and is thankful that the Knights of Columbus has helped him grow into a stronger leader and a stronger Catholic.
