Carry the Cross Challenge

The Seminarians of the Archdiocese of Atlanta are serving Christ, and dedicating themselves to becoming the next generation of Priests for our church. They need our support to carry them through their time of formation. Jesus Himself needed a "Cross-Bearer" to make it to Calvary. He carried His Cross for us. We must go and do likewise.

Is your Parish up for a challenge? Transfiguration KofC Council 10362 is challenging all the councils and assemblies in the Archdiocese to mobilize their Parishes for a “Carry The Cross” challenge walk for our Atlanta Seminarians. Much like a 5K run, this is an opportunity to hike 6 miles at Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park BUT in teams of 3-6 adults sharing the task of carrying a 40-pound cross* the length of the trail. The process is simple:

Form a Team of 3-6 people **
Register your team here on the Carry The Cross Challenge website
Share the donation links for your team with potential donors
Encourage other groups in your Parish to form teams
Complete the Challenge

Team Member Responsibilities

Team members have two responsibilities:

1. To raise money for your team (to win "the Challenge")

2. Walk with and help carry the cross with other members of the team.

Team Leader: You have to organize, energize, and mobilize your team. This commitment requires choosing great team members and maintaining contact with them throughout the period leading up to the actual event. And by the way, the site remains open for contributions for a week or more after the event, so fundraising can continue and is often more successful after the event!

On the day of the event, you will have those who want to help carry the cross with your team. Our only recommendation is that you ensure your team members are comfortable with your approach to the request. Raising money is the primary responsibility of the team of 5-6. If you want to reserve the opportunity to carry the cross at the event for just those who raised money for the team, or if you want to set other boundaries, that is your decision. Set and communicate those "requirements" ahead of time. We have seen many men who raised hundreds of dollars never receive the honor of carrying the cross because this important issue was not communicated up front and, of course, no longer participate.

So, you want to continue? Identify 5-6 council members who are interested in helping the seminarians enough to walk 6.2 miles for them. Make certain they understand it is expected that they will make every effort to raise money from friends and family just as they would if they were participating in any other 5K event for charity. This is exactly that!

You can appeal to your church community in any way your pastor allows. But be sensitive to how often your council reaches out to this limited group. If you think this will be a challenge, raising money from friends and family of team members can be a very successful approach.

The website makes tracking donations to each team easy, but it doesn't track donations to the individual team member. If you are setting goals for the team members (highly recommended), you will have to ask each member to review the contributions and notify contributors that they need to include their name or the team member's name in the contribution so it can be tracked. Again, setting goals helps everyone be accountable to the other team members, and it reinforces unity and fraternity.

HOW TO RAISE MONEY

Raising Money

Raising money is easy! Using the team site (after your team is established), each team member can upload a list of email addresses and write a quick request for donations from family and friends. The site can keep track of donations by team member and team without any additional effort and you can be certain your donations will be credited to your team. Even $5 to $10 from those close to you will make a difference. You can solicit donations directly but you will have to ask your friends to make sure they note your team when making their donation and you will have to include the link to the site! It's much easier to use the site's automation. Email addresses are not used for other solicitation.

FEED THE HOMELESS

What: Feed the Homeless

When: Every Thursday 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Where: Shady Grove Baptist Church, 1654 Bells Ferry Rd., Marietta, GA 30066

How: The Knights provide one person each Thursday to plate and serve a hot lunch to as many as 100 people. We are supporting an existing team of two men who cook and manage the facility. This opportunity is easy and limited in scope. Consider volunteering today!
