St. Benedict Council #9056

UKnight's New Council Slide Show Feature
Will Appear Soon

What does a Knight do? We provide support to our Faith, the Family, the Community and to the Sanctity of Life. Let's take a tour of this year's St. Benedict Council "Knights in Action"

Our year begins every summer with the formation of the Officer's cadre and taking the Oaths of Office

And then it is right into our first big fundraiser- the Italian Fest at St. Gregory held at the end of July every year

Pasta, pizza, salads...and of course wine and cannoli are a feast

But so is the entertainment!

We take time to celebrate the Knights and Spouses who give of themselves to their Church and Community

As the summer comes to an end, we donate and serve beverages at the St. Gregory Parish Picnic

The fall kicks off with the annual Eucharistic Procession on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk

We spruce up the Hope4Life van, providing assistance and ultrasounds to women in support of their pregnancy

Who can be a better compass for Knights than St. Joseph? Our Knights turned their carpentry skills over to both St. Gregory to refurbish pews, and to the Food Pantry for refurbishing the building

This includes funding and providing carpentry, cleaning, window and door replacements

November brings us the signature Knights of Columbus program- the Special Olympics! Our Council delivers thousands of meals, snacks and beverages to athletes throughout Virginia Beach participating in the Fall Championships

November brings Thanksgiving, and our Knights help pack up donations and provide funds to the regional "Mayflower Marathon" for the Southeastern VA food bank

December brings Advent, and the Knights bring out Santa and a Pancake Breakfast for the children of St. Gregory

But we also take the time to celebrate with our spouses!

Until every life has meaning, we continue to March for Life. Through prayer vigils, novena and 40 Days for Life social media events, and sponsorship and partaking of the Marches for Life in Washington DC and Richmond VA, our Knights are supporting Life

February brings the Polar Plunge, the ultimate fundraiser for Special Olympics. Our Council sponsor a pre-plunge dinner on the day before the event for out-of-town councils.

Of course, there are a few of us who brave the waters too!

Each year, we take some time to honor our spouses in celebration of Valentine's Day. We enjoyed a great meal at Primo's this year!

It seems Christmas has scarcely ended before Lent is upon us. We begin this season with our annual Shrove Tuesday dinner for our parish of St. Gregory the Great. Pancakes and pastries, sausages and bacon all celebrate our community as we prepare for the Lenten fasting and abstinence.

The last Saturday in February provides our Knights a great opportunity: The St. Gregory the Great School has a Daddy Daughter Dance- some Knights serve and provide game support, while others escort their lovely children!

Our Fish Fry Fridays each week of Lent provide a great opportunity to reach out to our Community as well as raise funds for our causes such as Special Olympics

REMEMBERING 2025...AND LOOKING FORWARD TO 2026

As the calendar turns from 2025 to 2026, let’s look back at some of the great happenings:

  • January as always brings out our prayers for the rights of the unborn. With a Novena and a trip to Washington DC for the Right to Life March, Knights will be always supporting the mothers and families in need before and after their birth. We also hold the Free Throw Challenge over several weeks at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School.  And monthly events, like First Thursday Adoration at St. Gregory, and monthly Hispanic Roundtable meetings begin anew
  • February kicks into gear as host a dinners for all Knights across the Commonwealth that travel here for the Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics, as well as sponsor our own divers. Typically Lent begins with a prelude Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner for the parish, followed by the ever popular Fish Fry every Friday.  And we’ll never be able to repay the support our Ladies give us, but we’ll at least celebrate them with a dinner for St. Valentine’s Day.
  • March continues the Fish Fry, and we’ll be hosting the games at the school’s Daddy-Daughter dance (as well as the November Mother-Son dance)
  • April brings Easter typically, and as we wrap up the Fish Fry, you’ll find us in Richmond at the Virginia State March for Life. You’ll also see us out in the Church with our yellow vest, helping with Easter parking, and then later in the month, with tootsie rolls in hand collecting for KOVAR, the charity providing grants and support to organizations in Virgina for the mentally disabled.
  • May finds us back in the school kitchen, as we honor the Marian month with the annual Mother’s Day Breakfast. We’ll also select and reward a few students at the school for their leadership and academic achievements
  • June completes our Council fraternal year, and we will celebrate with a picnic and awards for the Family and Knight of the Year. We will also be leading the Eucharistic Procession at the Church, as serving in various roles at the Community Nights and picnics throughout the summer
  • July kicks off our Fraternal Year with the installation of new officers.
  • In August, we’ll also be hosting several special meal drive-thru events, such as Fish Boils and Chicken BBQ this month and in the months ahead
  • September continues with parish picnic and fund-raising meals for our various charities.
  • October includes participation at the Virginia Beach Boardwalk Rosary for Life Procession.
  • November is a month of great activity! We’ll be helping out as volunteers at the many events of the Virginia Special Olympics Fall Championships, and delivering meals to over a thousand athletes! We’ll be remembering our Knights who have gone before us in a memorial Mass, and we’ll celebrate Veteran’s Day with a walk in the Virginia Beach city parade. We’ll have our fall collection for KOVAR, and lend our support to the Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore Foodbank’s Mayflower Marathon in both labor and a financial donation. We’ll also provide several dozen children with warmth this winter with our donation of several dozen “Coats for Kids”.

December wraps up a busy calendar year with sales of “Keep Christ in Christmas” greeting card sales.  We’ll be helping with the national “Wreaths Across America” laying of wreaths for veterans in cemeteries throughout our community.  We’ll take some time to join in fellowship with our families at the annual Christmas Party.  And we’ll be out supporting our Church once again with parking for Mass.
