Todd M. Galati
For more than 21 years, SK Todd Galati has volunteered at the Reno Air Races and watched his responsibilities, as well as Ponderosa Council 4928 event scope grow. This year, the Reno National Championship Air Races were suspended as the Reno Air Races Association (RARA) prepared to relocate to Roswell, NM in 2025. In the interim, RARA initiated its 2024 Reno Air Show … essentially a 2½ day air program event without competitive air racing. Working with RARA, SK Todd negotiated a new contract. As in the immediate past, the Council’s scope included manning 6 parking lots with diverse challenges, transporting corporate sponsor coolers to and from the tarmac, and an ice sales team. He was the Council’s primary point of contact with RARA providing experience and much needed program continuity. In addition to Council event planning, event coordination with RARA, event set up, and working more than 2½ event days from dawn to dusk, Todd personally recruited Bishop Manogue Catholic HS students for community service hours to help fill a need. For all that he did, SK Todd is recognized as our Council’s October Knight of the Month.

Julian X. Lopez
As our newest member, Bro. Julian X. Lopez made his Exemplification of Charity, Unity & Fraternity in person in our Council Chambers on August 6, 2024. He is also our youngest member and one of only two Ponderosa Council 4928 members born after the turn of the century. In his short time as a knight, Julian’s contributions have been remarkable. First, he volunteered to work three shifts at the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off: twice in a Coke® trailer beverage station and full time on Labor Day in the B-2 Big Beverage station. His participation totaled 18½ hours and earned him a prestigious Ponderosa Council ball cap. In addition, on September 7th, he volunteered at the Council’s Soccer Challenge program held at the Shadow Mountain Sports Complex in Sparks. It was there he worked the target soccer net retrieving over 300 balls shot on goal while a crew of our older members retrieved the few missed by these future soccer stars. For all that he has done supporting Council fundraising and the Soccer Challenge Community program in this short period, Bro. Julian X. Lopez is recognized as our Knight of the Month for September.

Carmelito "Jun" Bautista
Bro. Jun Bautista made his Exemplification of Charity, Unity & Fraternity on July 2, 2024. As a Holy Cross Catholic Community parish Greeter, he is part of a new wave of younger parish candidates wishing to put their faith in action by joining the Knights of Columbus. Under the Council’s “New Member Mentoring Program” which focuses on developing quality knights, Jun was encouraged to step up and become active in the Council. He opted to volunteer at the upcoming Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off committing to three (3) day shifts totaling 18½ hours working the Coke® trailer beverage station with fellow members. This initiative earned him a prestigious Ponderosa Council 4928 ball cap. More importantly and to top it off, it made him feel welcomed and a part of our active Council, which is the primary goal of our mentoring program. For his contribution of time and energy over the holiday period, Bro. Jun Bautista is recognized as our Knight of the Month for September. Welcome aboard!

It was his battlefield experiences that changed his chosen field from Engineering prior to enlistment to Medicine following his honorary discharge, retiring as a successful OB/GYN. July 2024
George A. Minter
As the new fraternal year commenced, SK George turned in the gravel of the office of the Grand Knight. In addition, he was approved to serve by Supreme as the Council’s Financial Secretary and volunteered as the Council's Life Program Director. In doing so, he worked hard to help address a short notice appeal from Catholic Charities to promote the Elevating Families program amongst other area councils. Remarkably, on July 10th, Catholic Charities held a promotional program with supportive knights including our State Life Director SK John DeBord and others in attendance. SK George already has plans in the making for another run or two at promotion in the near term. We anticipate success. As one Council Officer said, “It’s hard to say ‘no’ to George.” For his responsiveness, commitment and planning skill, the Council recognizes SK George A. Minter as its July Knight of the Month.

In doing so, the Association gained much needed event experience and program continuity; the council gained increased fundraising opportunities. For all that he does, he is recognized as our August Knight of the Month.

July 2023
Fr. Alon M Vergara, OSA
Supreme’s Faith in Action program model recognizes the changing needs of today’s Catholic men. The key to remaining relevant is the implementation of faith-filled family programs aided by council chaplains who act as spiritual advisors to our brother knights and their families. Ponderosa Council lost that voice with the passing of Fr. George C. Wolf last September. With great fortune, in January, Fr. Arlon M. Vergara, OSA, the Parochial Vicar of St. Theresa of the Little Flower Catholic Church, Reno, volunteered to be our Council Chaplain. In doing so he has offered the spiritual guidance and direction needed to further the success of our Council to help our members to live out their commitment to the Catholic faith and the vision of Blessed Michael McGivney. For all that he does, Fr. Arlon is recognized as our July Knight of the Month.

In return, he received rave reviews about the food and thought provoking discussion about the meaning of masculinity in today’s society |

In addition, we recognize Bryan for his varied and generous program support of Council service initiatives. For example, in February, he covered 9 of the 12 masses, and in April, 6 of the 10 masses, passing out raffle/recruiting flyers at each Holy Cross Catholic Community mass. That takes real commitment! In addition, he stepped up to the Council office of Inside Guard.
This month he is recognized for greeting parishioners and handing out promotional flyers over three (3) consecutive weekends before the masses and assisting in the promotion of Council membership and other programs immediately thereafter. His efforts were one of the primary reasons why our Council was successful in adding a new transfer-in and two newly exemplified candidates.

|
February 2023
W. Anthony Watts
SK Anthony continues to make a positive impact on the Council with his energy, marketing skills, commitment, and technical expertise gained as a professional meteorologist and an on-air persona.
This was manifested most recently with his input into and the production of over 500 double-sided promotional flyers handed out to parishioners over three weekends in support of the Nevada State Council Seminarian Education Fund raffle and the Council’s mid-year membership drive, covering all printing costs, and handing out many in person. In addition, SK Anthony has stepped up to the office of Chancellor and is our FAITH Program Director.

Leonard J. Pugh
Bro. Leonard Pugh is recognized as the Ponderosa Council 4928 Knight of the Month in January for co-chairing the 2023 Diocese of Reno Conference at the Nugget Casino Resort. This annual event, which had incurred a two-year, in-person program hiatus, as well as changes in key Diocesan personnel, gave rise to several challenges. It was Len’s experience, organizational leadership skills and commitment that contributed greatly to the success of this Diocesan program. |
|
December 2022
W. Anthony Watts
Whether it’s the weather or not, this recent knight transferee from Chico, CA has impacted something what everybody talks about, but seldom does much about: bringing the latest audio-visual technologies to the Council.
As a former TV weatherman, and an active professional meteorologist, SK Anthony has worked with and understands the potential of the latest technology and how best to reach out to our younger generation. Admittedly, many of us baby boomers were skeptical, but we asked him to try to capture the commitment and joy of our members working the Breakfast with Santa and the Coats for Kids programs. The results were terrific for which he is recognized as our Knight of the Month for December.

November 2022
Mark K. Lane
Bro. Mark Lane is often associated with programs in support of LIFE category initiatives and the sport of motocross racing. With respect to the former, Mark stepped up to Co-chair the 2022 Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities held at the Walmart Supercenter in Sparks. In addition to staffing and leading volunteer teams at each of the two main entrances over the weekend, his cheerful presence (and probably the free Tootsie Roll bars) captivated donors to achieve one of our best donation totals to date. Bro. Mark makes a difference and is worthy of being recognized as our Council Knight of the Month. |
|
November 2022
Charles W. Moses
As our long-standing Program Chair for the Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities, Bro. Charles Moses stepped down to Co-chair to better mentor others in this important LIFE category initiative. However, it’s hard to let go of a program that is both personal and meaningful. He continued to work store-front shifts throughout the weekend to help make this year’s Council program a success. Four local special needs programs, plus the Nevada State Council, will all benefit from his leadership and program commitment. For all that he does, Bro. Chuck is recognized as our Council Knight of the Month. |
|
October 2022
Charles B. Goucher
In August-September, SK Charles B. Goucher volunteered at the six-day Nugget Rib Cookoff and as the Lot 9 Parking Lot lead from set-up through the five-day Reno Air Races event. In October, the Council hosts its annual appreciation dinner to recognize the contributions of volunteers such as him who help make our major fundraisers a success.
With SK Chuck, it was different. He further volunteered to help plan, organize, and prepare the five-star spaghetti dinner for the Council’s guests of honor. Celebrity chefs took note. The Council did too. For his on-going commitment, energy, and leadership in support of Ponderosa Council, SK Charles B. Goucher is recognized as our Knight of the Month for October.

September 2022
Todd M Galati
For more than 20 years, Bro. Todd Galati has volunteered for the Reno Air Races and watched his responsibilities, as well as Ponderosa Council’s event scope, grow. This year, the Council’s scope included 6 Parking Lots with diverse challenges, an Ice Sales team, and corporate sponsor Cooler Transport to and from the tarmac. Once again, Todd was the primary point of contact with RARA providing experience and continuity much needed and appreciated by RARA Management. In addition to Council event planning, event coordination with RARA, event set up, and working five event days from dawn to dusk, Todd personally recruited 27 Bishop Manogue Catholic HS students for community service hours to help fill a need. In recognition of his on-going commitment, energy, and leadership that helped contribute to the success of the Reno Air Races and the Council’s major fundraiser, Bro. Todd is recognized as our September Knight of the Month.

June 2022
Thierry V. Barkley
We all expect quality leadership from our elected officers, but Grand Knight SK Thierry exceeded expectations. In FY 2021-22, he stepped up and guided the Council through arguably the most challenging and difficult of times — a period where our Council was both impacted by pandemic mandates and the isolation imposed on the Council by the pastor of Holy Cross. To achieve success under such circumstances, SK Thierry used his knowledge and skill as a practicing attorney, a Past Council Grand Knight (2007-08) and Former State Council Advocate (2015-19) to provide meaningful Faith in Action programing for our membership and a positive, ready, willing, and able confidence for the new Bishop of Reno. |
|
May 2022
Charles B. Goucher
SK Charles B. Goucher is a born leader being a Ponderosa Council Past Grand Knight, a Council Trustee, and the current Faithful Navigator of Bishop Manogue Assembly 612. On Mother’s Day weekend, he helped organize flower distribution teams at the masses to present to Holy Cross moms nearly 400 long-stemmed carnations. It was the first in-parish, Council-sponsored event allowed at Holy Cross in over two years. Currently, he is promoting the Assembly’s Wives Appreciation Dinner to be held on June 4th. One could safely say that he’s a “ladies’ man,” one who recognizes the many contributions of member wives and their significant others in furthering our fraternal goals. For all that he does, SK Chuck is recognized as our Knight of the Month for May.

April 2022
Fr. George Wolf
Fr. George is 84 years young, a diocesan priest for 59 years, and a knight for 52. After serving in other diocesan positions including that of Bishop Manogue CHS principal, he was assigned as pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Community on Goldy Way in 1983. When the parish outgrew its original home, Fr. George oversaw the construction of the “church on the hill” dedicated on December 29, 2001. He retired in 2008 after serving as pastor for 25 years. Fr. George is still frequently seen as a visiting celebrant to the parish he built and has been and continues to be our Council Chaplain. Recently, Fr. George cleaned out his closet (actually, it was his items in the parish safe) and donated to the parish a treasured relic of his from the Holy Land— a monstrance containing a true piece of the crucifixion cross of the Christ Jesus. That donation is currently on display in a custom built cabinet placed on the wall to the right of the Holy Cross altar. For all that he did and continues to do for the “church on the hill” and Ponderosa Council, Fr. George C. Wolf is recognized as our Knight of the Month. In the minds of most, he remains our Pastor Emeritus.

February 2022
Herbert A. Melendez
Putting one’s “Faith in Action.” That’s how best to describe our Former District Deputy SK Herb Melendez who is just months away from finishing the three-year journey to become a deacon. His ordination is scheduled for September 10th. Herb is a Lector, a Eucharistic Minister, the head the Holy Cross RCIC program and a member of the parish Pastoral Council. More importantly, he is the head of a family who are amongst the most active in the parish. The key: SK Herb always finds ways to engage people in the faith and to help when there is a need.

For Ponderosa Council members it brought back memories of what our Council has missed at our home parish for the past 24 months. |
|
November 2021
Charles W. Moses
Long recognized as the Council’s champion and program chair for the Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities, Bro. Chuck travelled a different path this year. First, he was required to drive over 450 miles to Tonopah to complete the transport of Tootsie roll product from Las Vegas as well as the time needed to complete local delivery to scattered councils in northern Nevada. Secondly, when not en route, Bro. Chuck volunteered his time (1) at the Sparks Police Dept. Appreciation Luncheon grilling and serving, (2) at the Ponderosa Council Soccer Challenge enduring the discomfort of unseasonal wet weather, and (3) by completing multiple Council dress orders (but not the sewing) so that our members look their best in Ponderosa green. In sum, he is our Knight of the Month for all that he does to help the Council achieve its fraternal goals.

October 2021
Robert L. Culwell
Robert (Bob) "Put me in Coach" Culwell has a long history of Council participation. In addition to being a Columbian Squires Counselor, the Council’s tax expert and a Diocesan Conference set up man, he is best recognized as the RARA Lot 10 gatekeeper and event concierge to the lost at the Reno Air Races. SK Bob has a heart of gold, but his ticker needed some medical treatment that called for rest. Even so, he convinced all that he could still safely man the Lot 10 gate this year and he did. For stepping up and meeting a need once again, SK Bob is recognized as our Council October Knight of the Month. |
|
September 2021
Todd M. Galati
For the 19th year, Bro. Todd M. Galati volunteered in support of our Reno Air Races fundraiser. He certainly earned recognition for longevity, but the true value of his presence far exceeds that. Just ask the race officials who struggled to get this national event up and running after a year’s hiatus on short notice. As Program Co-chair, Todd’s experience, leadership, and drive, specifically as it relates to Cooler Line set-up, staffing, and program execution over the 5-day event, cannot be overstated. Despite formal race event program awards, he is our best pilot. |
|
August 2021
Jay Campbell
For the month of August, the Council recognizes Bro. Jay Campbell who stepped up to fill a need in support of arguably the most impactful Knights of Columbus hunger relief program in the State. The success of the Sprouts Initiative, which delivers fresh edible perishable food to where the need is greatest, relies on trusted and committed volunteers who, on a weekly basis, collect and make delivery to families known to face food insecurity. Bro. Jay answered that call. |
|
July 2021
Robert F. Bertschinger
This month the Council honors SK Bob Bertschinger, 51 years a knight and former softball player on the senior circuit. Scouts would classify him as a versatile player who can cover many bases. He is the Greeter at the 5:00pm mass, as well as head Usher and Eucharistic Minister. Sadly, we have no softball questions for him. He lost a step or two in recent years and has had to hang up his ball cap with his collection of many others. Some new retiree is probably covering left field. Fortunately, we captured Bob with his other hat on taken at a recent Tootsie Roll drive. He makes our All-Star team. |
|
June 2021
Charles B. Goucher
SK Chuck started the first of his two consecutive terms of office as Council Grand Knight in July 2019. He brought energy, commitment and leadership under Supremes’ Faith in Action program maintaining our tradition as one of the premier councils in the State. In FY 2019-20, he was named Nevada Grand Knight of the Year. By March 2020, all his leadership skills would be tested to the core due to the pandemic. More importantly, he was instrumental in sustaining and reinvigorating our membership safely through technology, program innovation, hard work and people skills. While he is being honored as our June Knight of the Month for fulfilling all the responsibilities of his office at a high level, he will long be remembered for helping the Council get its swagger back. Thanks, Chuck! |

May 2021
George F. Mager, Jr.
Bro. George reached two new milestones this past month. First, he achieved Honorary Life Membership. Secondly, after having built his own home over 40 years ago, and is currently proficient in scroll saw art, he answered a new challenge and completed the first of three new Karma Boxes. Make no mistake about it. Enough paint covers salvaged roof plywood blemishes well. In addition, the very presence of these new Karma Boxes in the community will expand the Council’s outreach to the needy. For this, Bro. George Mager reaches another milestone. He is our Knight of the Month for May. |
|
April 2021
Russell J. Bernhardt
In 2015, SK Russ developed the Council’s Scholastic Financial Support Evaluation Guidelines. Since 2016, he has been the program’s Committee Chair. Like so many other Council programs, State-mandated pandemic restrictions provided its challenges. This year almost all program promotion, application distribution and committee evaluations were done remotely over the internet. Four parish students were awarded scholastic financial aid. For his years of service to the Scholarship program, and for making it successfully happen once again in 2021, SK Russ is recognized as the Council’s April Knight of the Month. |
|
March 2021
John M. Bilka
For nearly 8 years, Bro. John Bilka has led the Recycling Aluminum Cans for Scholarships program. It is because of this long-term association that he is often referred to as the “can man.” In truth, it’s not the crushed aluminum that makes him notable, it’s because he is always willing to step up and “can” help out at many Council events … most recently in the Breakfast with Santa kitchen, the 2,000 Meals-To-Go production line and outside on the grill for the SPD Appreciation Luncheon. In recognition of his on-going support, the Council “can” and does honor him as its Knight of the Month for March. |
|
February 2021
George A. Minter
In his role as Council Program Director, Trustee SK George is often the link between program member ideas and the council-level plans that are needed to successfully execute service initiatives. His meticulous accounting of event volunteers, of hours, donations, income and costs helps our Grand Knight complete council activity reports and puts a smile on the face of the State Program Director. Furthermore, in this year of pandemic turmoil, he provided the much-needed internal audit scrutiny of the Council’s fraternal budget at mid-year. As Council Trustee, he likes the numbers to stay Ponderosa green. Thus, in sum, there are numerous reasons why it all adds up on balance and in balance that our numbers guy is Ponderosa Council’s Knight of the Month for February. |
|
January 2021
Christopher P. DeRicco
Marine Sgt. Frankie Zaehringer was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010. In memoriam, Operation Toy Box, a gifting program to cheer up children in local hospital pediatric wards over the Christmas holidays, was initiated in his name. Over the years this initiative has grown. Bro. Chris is honored as the January Knight of the Month for his on-going commitment to its success. Sgt. Frankie: We haven’t forgotten about you.

|
December 2020
Thomas J. J. Cashell
Since first being drafted (12th round) by the Council in 2017, SK Tom has become an impact player. His leadership skills have helped him make the Coats for Kids and the Breakfast with Santa programs outstanding successes despite the pandemic. He is the spirit of Christmas present but not Santa. He is a parish lector but one who listens to the needy. He is a team builder who puts his Faith in Action at such events as the 40-days for Life prayer vigil, and as Council Recorder putting attendee discussions on paper. For all this, SK Tom is our Knight of the Month for December. |
|
November 2020
Michael J. Morris
SK Michael is the Council’s Life Director and the parish Culture of Life program lead. No one is as committed to Pro-Life programs than he, and no one has been busier in the support of such programs than him during the month of October. SK Michael led the 40-Days for Life prayer vigil encouraging the participation of 14 members who volunteered over 85 hours in peaceful protest, and the Protect Our Girls parental notification petition drive obtaining approximately 200 registered voter petition signatures after all weekend parish masses. He makes a difference. |

John also holds a long-standing parish Bible Study program and is a frequent participant in Council service initiatives and fundraising programs. Bro. Bro. Jay has been a member of the Council since 2017 and achieved his 3rd Degree in May. When member Knights and parishioners needed help to move, he was there. He is also the trusted head usher at the 8:00am Sunday Mass helping provide a warm welcoming, reflective, spiritual and informative Catholic religious service experience at Holy Cross Catholic Community. For all this, Bro. Jay is deservedly recognized as our Council Knight of the Month for September. |

In addition, he has provided status updates and contact information to the Retention Committee to help retain members, all the while meeting his responsibilities as Financial Secretary to manage membership records, Council bills and finances. For this too, he is being recognized as Knight of the Month for August. Good job! Who writes your material? |

At SK Howard Richner’s home, Steve helped organized and lead a team of fellow knights and family in digging out fence posts, concrete, and tree stumps — work that Howard could not possibly have been done by himself even if he wasn't ailing. Contrary to rumor, SK Steve did not do this good deed in a formal tuxedo. He is more of a hands-on guy. |

Ramon Gasataya
Bro. Ramon has been a Knight since November 1999, went Third Degree in April 2014 and immediately sought to participate as a Council Officer. He was elected to serve as an Outside Guard in 2014-15 and in 2015-16. Ramon is a husband and father with young children which demands a lot of his time and attention. Nevertheless, Bro. Ramon found the time to volunteer for the family cook-out for the SONshine Summer Youth Camp lunch, arriving early for set-up, then cooking/serving, and helping breakdown and clean up of the event set up. His enthusiasm for getting the job done and his fun-loving nature are greatly appreciated. |

Russ Bernhardt
Russ, within 1-1/2 years of becoming a knight, has distinguished himself as one of the most sincerely dedicated men in the Council. Elected as Council Recorder, he has prepared July Business Meeting minutes within 24 hours for distribution to our members! He serves as the Health Chairman for our Council's semi-annual blood drives and has already begun the work for November 2015. With little notice, he prepared up-to-date: the "24 Hour Knight" flyer, the Directory of Service Initiatives, and a video slide presentation for review at the GK, FS and DD Training for GK George Minter. He also continues to serve as a Columbian Squires Counselor attending all Squires business meetings and social events. He's one special man! |

SK Bob has distinguished himself by his enthusiasm, activism and compassion in his daily life as a knight. He regularly attends 10:30 Sunday mass, serving as an usher, then rushes back to the kitchen to assist with serving and clean-up at our Pancake Breakfast events. During our annual fundraising activities he volunteered at the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off, worked the RARA Parking Lot 10 and ice cooler crew, and then cashiered at all UNR home football games. He participated in the Reno Veterans Day Parade, volunteered at Breakfast with Santa, and was a sommelier at the Holy Cross Wine Tasting.
