June 2025
Bernard Sokolsky
This Brother Knight is bravery’s definition. A profound virtue to poses as his repeated bravery has led to becoming a hero. A Knight truly willing to get cooked, and drowned repeatedly to serve a good cause. He has, more than he can remember, served for hours in sweltering heat with no wind. Even more memorable is being present when the possible beginning of the next great flood occurs in a flash and his demeanor to finish the task leaves him swimming into his truck. But the job was well done! It is for these reasons, Bernard Sokolsky is selected as the June 2025 Knight of the month. His shear determination and repeated heroism is to be commended as how to endure in any situation when serving our Lord. |

Edward Hobbs
This brother Knight has chosen to fully dedicate his time and talents to bring the love of Christ to everyone he meets. His humble demeanor and infectious smile enables this brother to converse comfortably with people who may not be spiritually, financially, or personally in good spirit as he patiently listens to their trials. His ability to witness the Joy of our Order to help those in need initiated a particularly delicate conversation with a young man at our parish’s Winter Shelter. His passion to help evolved into a VKCCI Grant Request. Additionally, his continuing support of our parish places his talents in our Ways and Means committee, our KofC lead supporting this year’s Fish Fry events, lead for Young Woman/Young Man essay contest, Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest, and most importantly, sharing his time, talent, and faith in our Order of Christian Initiation of Adults as a sponsor. This Knight’s intrinsic ability brining the Joy and Love of Christ to others wherever he is planted, along with his gentle wisdom are the reasons Ed Hobbs is selected as the Knight of the Month for April 2025.

Mike Kreutter
This brother Knight is our primary outreach to those in nursing homes as he is often supporting the Sunday Communion Service weekly at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. In addition to serving with our Deacons, he spends much time in study and prayer while he authors a reflection on the Sunday readings to the residents during the service. His insight and demeanor shares the warmth and love he feels towards the residents and while serving Eucharist, he shows great patience and compassion. Additionally, this Knight provides opportunity for praying the Rosary on a monthly basis at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and follows prayer with a little Bingo fun. Mike and his daughter also came to support the Special Olympics, providing their generosity and care to those they served. Mike outreach to those in nursing homes or with special needs is a shining example of his own personal growth and struggle; learning to read, and learning to share the Word of God with Grace and Love. It is for these reasons, Mike Kreutter is our Knight of the Month for November, 2024.

Kevin Finnegan
This brother Knight is a shining example of being a prayer warrior. When our parish was allowed to participate in the building during the Covid pandemic, Kevin and his son were instrumental in leading the Rosary at the 8:15 a.m. Mass; an example of Catholic devotion to our Mother Mary noticed by our Pastor. As a Knight, Fr. Dan contacted our Council and suggested we continue supporting the morning devotion to Our Lady which has since grown to several persons, including a few Knights, leading the Parish in the Rosary. Kevin and his son Hunter are an exceptional example of praying to Our Lady of Peace, offering the needs of the unborn, those in Purgatory, and the individual needs of those attending the service. It is for these reasons Kevin is selected as the August Knight of the Month for sharing his example in prayer life with our Church family.

Kevin Peterson
This Knight is an example of a true Catholic gentleman. He’s always here in the Parish supporting our Food Pantry. His service of helping families in need find a nourishing meal in our Food Pantry along with scouring Food Banks, delivering food to the homebound, and supporting our Holiday Food outreach at Thanksgiving and Christmas are this Knight’s primary mission. His conversion from Methodist to Catholicism after serving our Parish with his family for 20 years exemplifies his service to our Lord, our Parish, but most importantly, his family. He was a very strong adult member of the Youth of Ascension when his daughter was in high school, and he continued supporting the YOA as a trusted confidant to our teenage children even after his daughter graduated. He has not shied away from supporting our Parish in many different capacities: Finance Council, Parish Council, Eucharistic Minister, Safety Team, Garden Ministry. In addition, he is also the lead of our Global Solidarity ministry partnership with St. Ludocvick’s Parish in Tanzania. He has, with his wife, traveled to St. Ludovick’s and was instrumental in our support to our family in Taboro. He recently supported two Knights’ events: Archbishop Emeritus Paul Ruzoka’s Welcome to Ascension potluck dinner and our Faith Formation Team’s “And God did WHAT?” breakfast for dinner. He was instrumental is early logistics for the Archbishop’s potluck, and he was the ‘Man with the Mic’ during the vent attended by over 150 people. For “And God did WHAT?” he arrived early to assist in the kitchen, and he was the man behind the crepes (also known as thin pancakes). He made every one of the crepes and over 150 parishioners enjoyed the little French treat with butter and syrup. Even though he worked several hours cooking crepes, he stayed to help with kitchen cleanup. His dedication to his family, our Parish, and our Catholic church is evident in his willingness to serve in many capacities within the Church of Ascension. He is known for doubling down supporting his wife in her ministries within the Parish, and also for his warm and generous demeanor. It is always a pleasure to be, and work with him, and watch love pour from his heart with anyone he’s around. It is with great pleasure that Kevin Petersen is the Knight of the Month for July 2024.

June 2024
Gary Harmeyer
This Brother Knight was the first to welcome my family and I to this Parish over 7 years ago when I was “shopping” for a Parish and is one of the reasons I stopped my search. This Brother Knight was also the honoree when I took my 1st Degree Ceremony; the last Degree Ceremony this Council performed before the Combine Degree Ceremony, which I was honored to be in its first class. This Brother Sir Knight was also a part of my class of Sir Knights to be knighted into the Father Micheal J. McGivney Assembly, which meets here in the ACC, every 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM. I used to attend the 5:30 Mass before it was time for Francis to start attending the Children’s Liturgy, so when this Brother Sir Knight makes a guest appearance at the 8:15 Mass, I can’t wait to hear the Homily. I can always relate to them and there were times when I even thought he was talking directly to me from the Pulpit. He has 47 years of continuous service in the Order and is closing out his final year as the Council’s Lecturer. A position he has held for the past 6 years; where he has educated and entertained the Council and has been the Padre’s representative to the Council. He has not only been, to what I deem to be, the conscience of the Council but has been my conscience during my term as Grand Knight; offering support and affirmation when needed but more importantly, telling me to move when I start rambling. He may sit on my left but I hear him from my right. It is my pleasure to award Knight of the Month for June to SK Deacon Gary Harmeyer, HLM. |

Ronald Schmidt
This Brother Knight doesn’t say a lot but probably has the most important job in the Council. I learned to appreciate what he does for the Council when I had to fill in for his counterpart in the Assembly, which meets here in the ACC, every 4 th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM. He has kept me on track all year and our Brothers informed. When he’s not taking notes, you can find him helping in the Parish Food Pantry as well as putting together Holiday Food Baskets. You can count on finding him every Sunday at the 12:30 Mass where he is the sacristan. It is my pleasure to award Knight of the Month to Ronald Schmidt. |

April 2024
James Burton II
In his short time with the Council, this Brother Knight has already made a major impact. He sought out the Knights of Columbus after his first Mass at the Parish and did not take any convincing joining the Council. He eagerly joined events when he could but more importantly sent his regrets when he couldn’t. He recently took on the task of doing “wellness checks”, which was suggested by the Padre, by calling Brother Knights who have not been seen or heard from in a while. By doing this, he unwittingly appointed himself the Council’s Retention Chairman. Not to be out done, he has agreed to step up to an officer position that will eventually lead to becoming Grand Knight. This Brother Knight’s infectious energy is contagious and will lead to better things for the Council. While doing all this, this Brother Knight was taking marriage enrichment classes and celebrated the sacrament of marriage on 06 April 2024. It is my pleasure to award Knight of the Month to James Burton II. |

March 2024
Francis Foster
This Brother Knight doesn’t say much but his advice and guidance has been invaluable. He has offered encouragement when needed as well as constructive criticism when it was warranted. As a 30-year veteran of the juvenile system, working with the youth is still important to this Brother. This Brother belongs to a group that recently cut over 200 Pinewood Derby cars for over 25 different Packs in the Tidewater Council including Church of Ascension’s very own Pack 408. They also work with disabled veterans as part of the Purple Heart Project Bench Brigade. He also makes sure that Brother Knights and Sir Knights who want to attend the Business Meetings have a ride. The charity shown by this Brother Knight inside and outside of the Council affects people of all ages, young and old, and is an example to all. It is my pleasure to award Knight of the Month to Charter Member and Past Grand Knight, Sir Knight Francis Foster, Jr. |

February 2024
David Geisler
This Brother Knight prefers to stay out of the spotlight and does not seek the limelight but just like Hershey’s Whatchamacallit, he is always asked for by name. Whenever there is a Knight’s event that involves the kitchen, our head chef always makes sure that this tall and strong Knight is involved, especially when it’s the Spaghetti Dinner. This Knight also plays a very important role in the Council as well. He has the daunting task of making sure the Council stays within budget and that the Grand Knight doesn’t get himself in trouble with spending and when he does spend more than what has been approved or not approved, the Grand Knight has the backing of the Trustees. His advice continues to be appreciated and has a heavy influence on my decisions when it comes to spending. He doesn’t speak just to hear himself speak and always speaks his mind. He has even agreed to extend his position but by doing that, unfortunately extended a very special someone’s indentured servitude. Sorry Bernie. It is my pleasure to award Knight of the Month to SK David Geisler. |

January 2024
Edward Hobbs
This Brother Knight doesn’t say much but has a strong presence in the Parish and the Council. He is involved in a lot of ministries from Faith Formation to Social Ministry to Finance/ Operation/ Ways and Means. I have asked this Brother Knight to be the face of the Council for the Keep Christ in Christmas Contest, the Young Man/ Young Woman Contest as well as the upcoming Free Throw Championship Contest. If that wasn’t enough, he is running the Council’s website while our Worthy Webmaster is recuperating. While doing all this, he has even found time to arrange a Council Hockey Night in February. It is my pleasure to award Knight of the Month for January to our Worthy Community Director and world traveler, PGK Ed Hobbs. |

December 2023
Roy Blakeburn
When you think of the Council, you think of this Knight. All I have to do is mention this Knight’s name and people know what Council I’m from. The jury’s still out on whether it’s a good or bad thing. It’s a good thing, trust me. This Knight came up to me and stated he wanted to be one of my Program Directors and then told me what program he wanted. After I warned him that was the Program I was going to focus on, he still wanted the job. I’ve been pestering this Knight so much for the past 6 months that I’m surprised that he hasn’t blocked my number and still returns my calls. He even organized an event that allowed the Council a chance to show charity outside these walls through “Fly a Kite with a Knight” at Mount Trashmore. If he doesn’t already have enough to do, he’s also a District Warden for District 4 responsible for the Eastern Shore Councils. He is also responsible for organizing tonight’s event. It is my pleasure to announce Knight of the Month to SK Roy Blakeburn. |

November 2023
Ramon Villa
This Knight just came off, what I would call, a successful season. The season started off great then El Nino blew into the area. It seemed like I was on the phone with this Brother every Monday before an event to see which way the wind was going to blow. Even with the wash outs and the rescheduling, this Brother did some wheeling and dealing to ensure the Council ended up in the black versus the red. He is known to some as the Trail Boss and is the secretary of the Hampton Roads Car Club Council. On top of that, he is also an inspiring country artist when he is not leading music for the Church. It is my pleasure to award Knight of the Month for the month of November to Ramon, not Roman, “Pancho” Villa. |

October 2023
Norman Cherrix
This Knight recently became a 3rd Degree Knight so he could step up to take an officer position. He has been a constant at the Cruise-In’s, waking up early to help set it up. This Knight also recently took his 4th Degree becoming a full Knight. He is a part of his American Legion Post’s Honor Guard which helps lay Veterans to rest at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery as well as it’s Sergeant-at-Arms. It is my pleasure to award Knight of the Month for October to our Worthy Warden, Sir Knight Norman Cherrix. |
|
September 2023
Jonathan Brunn
This Knight is new to the Council, but he has already made a big impact. He picked up a leadership position his first night while stuffing Easter eggs without question and just came off a successful event, the Blessed Michael J. McGivney Hour, which honors our founder. He is taking up the position I had previously held and from there learned about the other aspects of the Council. It is my pleasure to award the Knight of the Month for September to SK Jonathan Brunn. |

August 2023
Jaime Ibanez-Estevez
This Brother Knight speaks softly and is gets straight to the point. His expertise, leadership and skills are always sought after. I was even asked if I could find someone else so I wouldn’t burn him out but he was there ready to do what was needed. His quality assurance and timing are spot on that even Gordon Ramsey would be hard pressed to find a flaw. On two separate nights, this brother and his team fed around 175 parishioners each night that attended Your Ascension Family Presents…And Jesus Did What?? I am pleased to present Knight of the Month for August to Jamie Ibanez-Estevez. |
|
July 2023
Bill Rockwell
This Brother made sure the Council finished off the 2022-2023 Fraternal Year off strong. Just in the month of June, he spearheaded the Flag Retirement Ceremony which had to be rescheduled from Memorial Day weekend as well as a Cookout that the Catching Fire Ministry held to celebrate the end of the school year. With all this, he even found time to help set up last month’s Cruise-in as well as support OLPH’s monthly Rosary and Bingo. It is my pleasure to present Knight of the Month for the month of June to Immediate Past Grand Knight William Rockwell, Jr. |

May 2023
Roy Blakeburn
This Sir Knight serves in an important role as an Officer with our Council. He is one of the most trusted advisors that I have when it comes to leading our Council towards our vision and purpose. He balances the needs of his family, Brother Knights and our Ascension Parish, with his time and talent. He also stepped up to help the District on a much larger level as he assist our District Deputy. Trips across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel can get old, but this Knight does not complain. He also served an important role in putting together a slate of officers for next year. How can I say NO to Roy Blakeburn as KOM for April. |
|
March 2023
Don Poole
This Sir Knight serves in an important role as an Officer with our Council. He and his wife are very active in several ministries and roles at Ascension. They can be heard leading the Rosary prayer on Sunday mornings. This Brother also serves as a Sacristant. Last month was an important month for our Council to be well represented with our Parish family as we lead two Fish Fry’s in March during Lent. The Brother Knight took point, and with a group of other dedicated Brothers (especially Jaime Ibanez), brought these initiatives to a successful conclusion! Our KOM for March is our Worthy Chancellor Don Poole. |
|
February 2023
Richard Diaz
This Sir Knight serves as an Officer in our Council in an important role. He can be counted on to ensure that our meeting chamber is set up and ready to go for each monthly membership meeting. His support doesn’t stop there. He is consistently supporting many of our Council initiatives as a volunteer, whether it be a Spaghetti Dinner, Fish Fry, Car Show or numerous other activities. He and his wife are active with our Ascension Parish Family as well. Our Knight of the Month for February is Sir Knight Richard Diaz. |
|
January 2023
Steve Cyrs
This Brother Knight has had a tremendous positive impact on our Council and with our Ascension Parish family in less than a year’s time. He is no stranger to what it takes to be a Brother Knight in our Order and transferred to our Council as a 3RD Degree Full Knight. Weather it be attending the Rosary Prayer before our Council meetings or volunteering in just about every Council event we have, I can count on him to be there. Recently he worked tirelessly at the Spaghetti Dinner and when faced with the cleanup that would make even the most seasoned “Dish Dog” scared, he busted the suds and cleaned up a huge mess (along with our DGK it should be noted). I am happy to award our January KOM to Steve Cyrs! |
|
December 2022
Des Coughlin
This Brother Knight has served our Council for many years! He was there at the beginning of our Council and remains loyal to this day. He serves in an important officer role and can always be depended upon to help whenever I or our Council has a need. As I look back at all the events that our Council has been involved in this year, this Worthy Knight has been there volunteering. Hid quiet personality may lead people to believe he is a “silent Knight”, but I know his love and dedication to our Council speak loudly! It is my honor to present the Knight of the Month for December to SK Dez Coughlin! |
|
November 2022
Mike Kruetter
This Brother Knight has served in a variety of leadership roles for the Knights including Deputy Grand Knight. Although work and family obligations have kept him from attending meetings on a regular basis, this Sir Knight is very active supporting our Ascension Parish and our Clergy. He is a regular reliable representative for the Knights at the Ascension Welcome Desk each week. He also helps support our Deacons with visits to OLPH on weekends. He is also active with the Assembly as a Sir Knight for events that the 4th Degree supports. Our Knight of the Month for November is Mike Kruetter! |

Fran Foster
This Sir Knight is a founding member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Council. He has been a leader ever since and one of the most loyal Brothers our Council has ever seen. His leadership included tenure as Grand Knight and several Officer positions throughout the years…including this year! He is also very active in the Fr. Michael J. McGivney Assembly serving as an Officer there for many years. His contributions to our Council are too many to list, however notably he has helped update our Parish community bulletin board with his wood working talents. He and his wife Kathy are active in their faith and a blessing to our Parish. Please join me in recognizing our Knight of the Month: Fran Foster |

June 2022
Ramon Villa
This Brother Knight is an inspiring leader who has been at the helm of our Council in the recent past. His spirit is an inspiration to me as an example of what “Servant Leadership” is all about. All you have to do is look at a number of Ministries at Ascension like our vibrant Music Ministry, or faith formation ministries like a “Biblical Walk Through the Mass” program as well as the recent Synod and you will see the positive impact that this Brother Knight has. That impact was certainly felt for our Council in a very big way as this Brother Knight led a very successful Car Show in June. It turns out that with over $7000 in net profits, it was the biggest fund raiser for our Council’s fiscal year last year! It is fitting that with our State Council motto of “Serving God by Serving Others” we recognized this Servant Leader, PGK Ramon Villa! |

May 2022
Gary Wasson
Our Knight of the Month has been faithfully serving this Council for many years. He is truly a man that operates behind the scenes and keeps this Council on solid footing. As the Knights have transitioned more to the electronic medium over the last few years, this Brother has been on the front lines making sure we are up to date and making all of our information accessible to our fellow Brothers. A Grand Knight simply could not function without his attention to detail and sound mentorship. We may not get to see him often, but he is always on duty supporting the Council. It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Brother Gary Wasson. |
|
April 2022
Ed Hobbs
Our Knight of the Month has been faithfully serving this Council and the Church of Ascension for many years. This month he played a key role for the State Council by relaunching our annual KOVAR drives after multiple delays caused by the Pandemic. He organized and operated the drive at one of our local ABC stores to raise money that will directly benefit organizations serving those with intellectual disabilities, a cause that is near and dear to the Knights. He also diligently worked behind the scenes to analyze our Council’s operating reserve and proposed solutions and amendments that will allow our organization further disburse funds to charitable causes while also being fiscally sound. It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Brother Ed Hobbs. |
|
March 2022
Jaime Ibanez-Estevez
Our Knight of the Month has been faithfully this Council and the Church of Ascension for many years. This month he was able to show off his organizational and culinary skills in a way that brought our entire Parish community closer together. This Brother worked with the Council and the Church’s Ways and Means committee to organize, purchase, and prepare the meals served at the March Fish Fry; the first one held in more than two years. His many hours of preparation paid off and the Church and Council enjoyed a fantastic evening of community and fellowship that is so important during the Lenten season. He also showed us that he is our go-to Knight when it comes to running the Kitchen! It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Brother Jaime Ibanez-Estevez. |

January 2022
Kevin Petersen
Our Knight of the Month has been faithfully serving our Council and our Parish for many years. He has been a long-serving member of the Church’s Social Justice Ministry, an organization that is committed to serving those less fortunate in our community. In the past month, this Brother has also helped the ministry collect household items and prepare residences for the resettlement of two refugee families from Afghanistan. If that didn’t keep him busy enough, he also is a regular volunteer with the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society and a familiar face in providing a pint of blood every 8 weeks at our Council Drives. His actions demonstrate Charity, Unity, and Fraternity on a daily basis. It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Brother Kevin Petersen |

Roy Trice
Our Knight of the Month is a newer addition to our Council. He jumped right into Council activities by volunteering to take an Officer role as soon as he had the chance. On Veterans Day, this Brother proudly displayed the colors of the Assembly during Virginia Beach’s Veterans Day parade. He immediately followed this by serving on the color guard during the re-dedication of the Ascension Flagpole. That same evening, he supported his Brother Knights by acting as a reader for the church-hosted Flag Retirement. He is a stellar example of what it means to be a Fourth Degree Knight. It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Brother and Sir Knight Roy Trice

October 2021
John Rowland
Our Knight of the Month has been faithfully serving our Council and our Parish for many years. He is a faithful Knight and also contributes to the Parish by working on the Church’s Safety Team. This Brother is dedicated to looking out for the well being of the families of Ascension and shows this on a weekly basis. He also dedicated two days, totaling 10 hours, of his time to helping the Council support the Special Olympics Virginia Fall Championships Soccer Tournament; an event that put smiles on the faces of many athletes. It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Brother John Rowland |

September 2021
Deacon Gary Harmeyer
Our Knight of the Month has been faithfully serving our Council and our Parish for many years. He is the head of the Church’s Ministry for the Sick and a trusted adviser to Father Daniel as well as the Parish Council. This Brother also works diligently behind the scenes to make sure our Council and the Parish operate in lock step to meet our common goals of helping our community grow in its Faith. He is probably best recognized for the mentorship he has provided to our great Ascension community, and this comes in the form of his wonderful homilies and insightful lectures at every Council meeting. I think each and every one of us would agree that we are more thoughtful and knowledgeable Catholics because of his words. It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Deacon Gary Harmeyer. |

August 2021
Jim Moran
Our Knight of the Month has been faithfully serving our Council for many years, but his most recent contributions are truly unique. This Brother took the lead on establishing a new degree team based on the recently established Exemplification ceremony released by Supreme. This included organizing multiple practices to ensure our Brother Knights were ready to execute the new procedures in a professional manner. All of this work was capped off by a fantastic Charity, Unity, and Fraternity Exemplification that was conducted on August 15th. Not only was this our Council’s first Exemplification under the new procedures, it was also the first one executed in District 4. These efforts directly led to the welcoming of two new Brother Knights into the Order. It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Brother Jim Moran. |

Vic Gruning
Our Knight of the Month has a fraternal spirit. He consistently serves with an open heart and hand and is a model servant and Catholic gentleman. He loves the order and the families of this community. This brother Knight is a familiar face not only to the council, but to the Parish as well. You can regularly find him handing you refreshments at most Church events, which includes a healthy serving of his friendly smile and good humor! You are also likely to see him donating his time to help with facilitating our blood drives--an impact that goes beyond just the individuals he interacts with that day, but by playing an important role in getting critical blood to fellow citizens under trying circumstances. He is also active in other ways in our Council and Parish Community. This Brother gives his time by organizing the Rainbows within Ascensions Community Life Ministry. You will also see him furthering the exploration of his Faith through engagement with the recent Missionary Disciple Workshop. This is a genuinely warm and friendly individual that serves this council and Parish in many ways.. It is my greatest honor to award the Knight of the month to Brother Vic Gruning. |

Our Knight of the month is one of our superstars of our council. He is our Life Program Director and ensured our council’s January Pro Life month stood out. He led a group of our council members and their wives to the annual March for Life. With his friendliness and leadership ability, he is always out front and getting Knights and their families involved in our council activities. He is also a great family man and ensures his family comes first. For all these and many more reasons Brock Thompson is our January Knight of the month. |

Brother Richard Diaz is exceptional example of a Catholic gentleman who consistently serves with his heart first. As council Warden, he ensures our chamber is always set up properly. He diligently discharges his duties with enthusiasm and always is eager to lend a helping hand. Richard spearheaded making a new council locker from the ground up and conducted an inventory of all council property. He joined the Knights a few years ago and has hit the decking running. It is my honor to present the Knight of the Month for August 2019 to Brother Richard Diaz.

Ramon Villa
Past Grand Knight Ramon Villa is exceptional example of a servant leader and Catholic gentleman. He has been instrumental in the success of our council in the last two years as Grand Knight. He has led our council through transitioning from “Surge with Service” to “Faith in Action.” This took a lot of work from the entire council team. He also was responsible from coordinating volunteers for the concert series for his first Grand Knight year. PGK Ramon also ensured brothers and their families were always thought of especially in times of need with the Mass Card program. In his second year as Grand Knight, he will receive Supreme Star Council Award. His sound leadership, spirit, zeal, and commitment are one we can all look up to. As such, I am honored to present the Knight of the Month for July 2019, to Immediate Past Grand Knight Ramon Villa. |

Gerard Palmisano
Our Knight of the Month has taken an increasingly active role in our Council and has proven to be a valuable asset to the organization. At the end of the last fraternal year Brother Gerard diligently volunteered to be an officer of this council. He wanted to do more and make an impact on his parish, community, and council. He currently is serving as a guard, however, last month he was thrusted into a greater role as the Grand Knight asked him to pick up the duties as acting Warden, while our elected Warden was excused. With little guidance and a lot of initiative, he performed those duties flawlessly. As such it is my honor to award Knight of the Month for July 2018 to Brother Gerard Palmisano. |

David Geisler
Our Knight of the Month has taken an increasingly active role in council. He has taken the lead on many events to ensure the council success. Over the summer month this brother took the lead as an event host for the summer concert series. Along with being a host, he served many other concerts to ensure all the required billets were filled. The recommendations he made on how the season should be organized were implemented, and the outcome of those recommendations yielded great results. During the second half of the fraternal year, our brother took the lead in coordinating with the church’s Ways and Means committee on the annual Lenten fish fry. This again was an overall success. He not only coordinated the logistics, but also served on the cook crew. Needless to say, the event and the food were both excellent. We hope his logistical and cooking skills yield the same great results for our next fish fry. Lastly, he has stepped up and been nominated by the council’s board of trustees to serve as the next Worthy Financial Secretary. Tom Frost
Brother Tom Frost passion for the order and its growth is absolutely second to none. Over the course of the last fraternal year to now, he has lead the charge in seeing our membership program develop into the model program as outlined by Supreme, from a consolidated committee to a three-tiered functioning working group, each with its own duties and assignments. He has provided guidance in the development of detailed processes to ensure every aspect of membership is functioning properly. He is most knowledgeable in the inner workings of his duties and seeks every opportunity to forward the vision of Fr. McGivney. He was instrumental in organizing our first parish membership drive for the fraternal year. Through his leadership and efforts, the council will have admitted at least 4 new members this half of the fraternal year, and be on track for achieving its goals by the end of the year. In addition to his role as the Membership Director, he volunteers each Sunday at the parish’s registration desk. Not only to ensure new parishioners are welcomed and provided the correct resources, but also to inform others of the great opportunities of the order. Brother Tom Frost is a great example of passion for what the Knights of Columbus could be for every Catholic Man and their family. He is a true Knight in Shining Armor. As such, it is my distinct honor to award Brother Tom Frost, Knight of the Month for September 2017. |

He continues to ensure this endeavor continues by taking the leadership role in coordinating future street clean ups.

In addition to leading his own set of concert fundraisers, he still volunteers to the other site hosts. During this year’s transition leadership, PGK served in an instrumental role in advising the new Grand Knight on financial and membership issues, and the operations of the council. While the new Grand Knight was awaiting access to Supreme’s and State’s reporting portal, he ensured all initial reporting requirements for this fraternal year, were submitted in a timely manner. Don Poole
Sir Knight Don Poole is a very active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Church of the Ascension. (Note: Don might actually be the MOST active member that we currently have within the Council - especially when it pertains to council events). Time and time again Don has stepped up to the plate when the council is presented with unexpected events to take on. In March of this year during the Officers meeting the Grand Knight informed the Officers that we had been asked by Rev. Fr. Daniel to organize and run in conjunction with the Ladies Auxiliary a Going Away Dinner in honor of Archbishop Paul Ruzoka from the Diocese of Tabor, Tanzinia. After a few moments of dead silence, Don stood up and stated, I got this". On May 18, the event happened and it was a huge success. In the months leading up to this event the only assisted that Don requested from the GK was he "I might need some assistance in knowing where to order the Chicken."
Don also finds the time to assist the church in numerous ministries such as Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and Sacristy and Don is an active member of the Parrish Council. This is a small list of the ministries that Don participates in.
It is my pleasure to present Knight of the Month for May 2017 to SK Don Poole.

Tom Frost is a very active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Church of the Ascension. This year when the ARM committee was formed Tom stepped up and assumed the role of Chairman for the ARM Committee. During the past 6 months, the ARM Committee under the leadership of Tom has grown to become a valuable asset to the Council. Specifically, by keeping track of upcoming degrees, membership and retention. When a degree is announced, and posted Tom personally contacts all the members awaiting that specific degree to let them know the place and time. When Fr. Daniel requested that the Council assume the task of manning the Church's welcome desk it was Tom that stepped up and took the lead. Furthermore, Tom has personally manned the desk on numerous Sundays over the past several months. It is my pleasure to present Knight of the Month for March 2017 to Brother Walter Thomas Frost. |

Last month John and his musical group, Fond Memories, provided entertainment at the spaghetti dinner co-sponsored by the Church of the Ascensions Ways & Means and the Knights of Columbus. Additionally, Jim assisted the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph, who were flooded out of their convent, by gaining local business donations of new mattresses and appliances.

November 2016
Gary Wasson
Brother Gary Wasson currently serves as the Council Treasurer. For the first six months of this fraternal year Gary has been a pillar of strength and a valuable source of information to me.
When Hurricane Matthew hit the region in early October, three Sisters in the Convent of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph, in Virginia Beach, suffered extensive damage from the rising flood waters. Several Knights of Columbus Councils in the Virginia Beach area came together to assist in the recovery and restoration efforts. The Grand Knight of Council 12117 called on the On Demand 911 team within the Council to form a plan as to how the Council could assist the Sisters. Brother Gary, who heads up the On Demand 911 team, contacted the team. Through his leadership of the On Demand 911 team, the Council provided over $1,300.00 in cash funds as well as the gathering and delivery of numerous essential items needed by the Sisters including four new mattress and box springs sets, dining room table and chairs, living room furniture, and a new washer and dryer, all of which were acquired at either no cost, or through Council, local businesses, and personal donations.
Gary volunteered to be a member of the following committees / teams within the council. He is assistant director of training for the council and is a member of the newly formed admissions, retention, and membership (A.R.M.) committee. He was a member of the By-Laws committee that met to review and recommend changes to the current By-Laws. Gary is the Council Public Affairs Officer and is responsible for council activities and information being posted to our website and disseminated to the church bulletins.
It is my pleasure to present Knight of the Month for November 2016 to our Worthy Treasurer - Brother and Third Degree Knight, Gary Wasson.

October 2016
Angelo Mele
In the beginning months of this fraternal year the Grand Knight was in need of filling several key positions within the Council. A request went out to the entire Council and Angelo stepped up to fill the role of Co-Chairman for the Community Program. Angelo is always present at all meetings the Officer, the Council as well as the Assembly. Angelo is also present and willing to assist in any and all of the council activities that we sponsor, without being asked – he just shows up. On Sundays you will find Angelo at the 1215 Mass either as a Lector or a Eucharistic Minister. Because of the shortage of Lectors at the 1215 Mass, Angelo is usually the Lector every Sunday at the 1215 Mass, if not every other Sunday. Angelo also has the time to serve on several other Ministries at the Church of the Ascension.
Several Months ago a request came down from the District Deputy requesting a nominee from our Council to be taken into consideration and possibly serve as the District Nominator for District 4. This would require the Nominator to attend several of the upcoming State Meetings. I forwarded this request to ALL the PGK in our council and received back only one positive reply - from Angelo. Subsequently Angelo was chosen to serve as the District Nominator from District 4. Angelo is a newly transferred Brother to Council 12117 and has definitely made his presence known. Angelo has already come up with ideas to be presented and work on for next year’s Council activities – Habitat for Humanity.
It is my pleasure to present Knight of the Month for October 2016 to FDD / PGK / PFN Angelo Mele.

September 2016
Rob Wilhelm
On September 4th our name sake Mother Teresa of Calcutta was canonized a Saint. Several months prior to this event Rob came to the Officer’s Meeting and suggested that the council conduct a celebration for Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Under Rob’s leadership it was decided that all Masses on September 4th would be held in honor of our namesake and a Social function would be held in the ACC after the 1215 mass. This event turned out to be a great success. There were over 300 parishioners in attendance and praises were reported to me by many of those in attendance. Additionally Rob worked many of the concerts during the last season, more than was expected of any one person. Rob is also the lead contact for the J&N Racing events that continues to be a source of income for the council. Additionally Rob was instrumental in the planning and execution in our last Membership Drive in October. |

August 2016

Brother Frank Klepaldo has outdone himself by working 14 of 20 concerts with five more to go. During the Month of August Brother Frank worked 5 of 5 concerts. This Brother is always available to help. Additionally, Brother Frank is also very active in church ministries. July 2016
James Skrabacz
James has been a Knight for just under 3 years and has really started stepping up and assisting in many ways. He is present at all the monthly meetings – I cannot remember a meeting when James was not present. Although James might appear to be a Silent Knight – that is in voice alone. He seems to be a Knight of few words but strong and visible in his actions.
James has assisted in many if not all of the setup and clean ups we have had for events in the past several months. He is always here early to assist with the setup of the council for meeting even though he is not an officer and being early is not a requirement.
On July 23rd the On Demand 911 event pressure washed the entire church picnic. James was there prior to many of the other brothers with a pressure washer, hoses and cleaning supplies that he provided. James meticulously went about spraying all the wooden items with a cleaning solution, giving it time to set in before power washing it off. I was informed that James has assisted in other On Demand 911 events and continues to be a valuable asset to this endeavor.
It is my privilege to present the Knight of the Month for July 2016 to Brother James Skrabacz.

June 2016
Michael Kreutter
Michael transferred to our council last year and immediately began taking on responsibilities within the council. When an officer position became vacant, Michael gladly stepped up to assume that position in midterm. When elections were held in June, Michael gladly took on and assumed the responsibilities as Outside Guard. This includes showing up hours earlier to set up the council chambers for all council events. Michael has participated in many if not all of the council events in the past several months. This includes the officers installation, Council awards and appreciation banquet and several On Demand 911 events. Michael has donated a cabinet to the 911 initiatives that will be installed with the residence of one of our adopted families. Michael has also begun training to take on the role of sacristy at the 10:30 Sunday Mass. When the Grand Knight requested someone to take on the task of ordering and tracking sales of our council shirts, Michael immediately answered the call stating he would handle it. Furthermore, Michael stated he would research the idea that was presented earlier to the council about obtaining a working council shirt. It is my pleasure to present Knight of the Month for June 2016 to Michael Kreutter.

Lanny White
This Sir Knight is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable Knights in our Council. He has served as a Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator as well as a District Deputy. He has been very active at the State level and chaired the KOVAR drive for the Virginia Knights for many years. He is a trusted adviser and has been a continual source of support throughout the year. Recently, he assisted in the First Degree that our Council hosted on April 28th…yet even more importantly, this Worthy SK took the point to co-chair the recent Third Degree that was held at our parish on May 14th. No less than 12 Knights from our Council attended this important ceremony. Our Council was well represented due in no small part to the effective leadership this brother SK demonstrated. This Brother SK also chaired the nominating committee and worked tirelessly with that team to present a worthy slate of officers for the next fraternal year. |

April 2016
Bruce Stevens
This Sir Knight is at the foundation of many of the volunteer services that our Council is involved with. When the call to action goes out, this Brother Knight steps up time and time again. Our largest fundraiser would likely not be a continued source of revenue if it were not for this Brother Knight and his wife. The Special Olympics are supported each year with hours of service by this Brother Knight as well as the regular Blood Drives that continue seamlessly without a hitch. There are many other initiatives that this Knight is involved with…too many to mention, so I will just say congratulations to our April KOM: SK Bruce Stevens! |

March 2016
Kevin and Glenn Webb
Our Council has many talented and dedicated Brothers who do what they can to support the interests of our Order in many ways. Sometimes that support comes in pairs. This duo has been involved in many initiatives that our Council has supported over the past month and beyond. Most notably helping out with the Fish Fry and Spring Membership Drive. Whenever there is a need for additional support and a helping hand required, this Father and son are there to answer the call. I am happy to name our co-Knights of the month for April Glen and Kevin Webb. |

February 2016
Michael DeSalvo
This Worthy Brother Knight has served the Order for almost 20 years! He could be considered one of our “Silent Knights” based on his quiet demeanor, yet his many charitable works and volunteer hours serving our Council and Parish speak very loudly on his behalf. This Brother can be seen at almost every Council event lending a hand where needed. He also is very active in the Parish, serving as a Sacristan and supporting the many ministries our Parish is engaged in. Recently when called upon to help out in a pinch selling Fish Fry tickets, this Brother Knight came to the rescue to help out. I am happy to name our February KOM: Michael DeSalvo |

This Worthy Sir Knight is a pillar in the leadership of our Council. His impact in the month of January was substantial. Through his efforts, the Council, in collaboration with the Ladies Auxiliary and the Ways and Means Committee raised a record $1,387 from the spaghetti dinner to support our Culture of Life initiative. This along with $,1500 raised through our annual Super Bowl pool, which this Brother Knight solely managed, might just earn him the nickname “Mr. Fundraiser”. Even though the weather caused us the cancel our inaugural March for Life bus trip to Washington DC, we have secured transportation for next year to keep the wheels rolling! I am proud to award the January Knight of the Month to one of my mentors: SK/PGK Ken Levins ! |

December 2015
Jim Moran
This Brother Knight is the go-to guy when it comes to matters of Family support for our Council. Not only does he chair the Family Programs Committee, but he spearheads two important Family events each year: the Easter Egg Hunt and the Annual Christmas Party. The recent Christmas party was so well received that I have heard many individuals come to me and say it was one of the best that they can remember. It is no small task to put this on and this Knight worked well with the Ladies Auxiliary and others to see it through. Additionally, our First Degree Ceremony this evening was successfully executed by the Degree Team that this Knight leads. I am happy to recognize Jim Moran as our December Knight of the Month! |

November 2015
Scott Tiemann
This Sir Knight is someone who serves our Council in many ways. He is an officer in the Council and helps lead with a “Servant’s Heart” This is most evident by the degree in which he supported so many Council initiatives in the month of November. This Brother Knight was seen assisting with the Special Olympics Soccer venue, volunteering at the Blood Drive and supporting the Council, scouts and Veterans at both the Flag Retirement ceremony and the Veteran’s Day parade. As a Sir Knight, he is actively involved in the Assembly and serves as an officer there as well. The example he sets is a good one to follow for any member of our Council. I am honored to recognize Scott Tiemann as our November Knight of the Month. |

October 2015
Mark Rupprecht
This Worthy Sir Knight has taken on a leadership role rather quickly for being a relatively new Knight in our Council. He is very active in many initiatives ranging from Blood Drives, Concerts, Food Drives, Membership Drives,…and the list goes on! This fellow Brother was one of the only Knights who volunteered at the Soccer Challenge last month and also helped ensure that the recent Special Olympics Soccer Competition was a success. He actively serves our Council as one of our Program Committee Chairman and never turns away when there is a need in our Council, church or community. I am also honored to say that he is a Veteran who served our Country as a career Naval Officer and USNA Graduate. Our KoM for October is Mark Rupprecht! |

September 2015
Don Wildes
This Brother Knight is one of the core members of our Council. You will see him at many events that span the spectrum of every principle in our Order. At first glance, our Knight of the Month may seem a bit reserved and quiet, but don’t let his quiet demeanor fool you; this individual has a strong passion for the success of our Council. This passion comes through in how he embraces his role as an officer as well as his leadership of one of our most important initiatives, Our Golf Tournament. This year we set a record for the revenue that was generated at the event and I am confident that was in large part through his efforts. I am proud to say our Knight of the Month for September is Brother Don Wildes! |

August 2015
Sam (Ralph) Simonis
Some Knights in our Council make their impact in ways that are not widely publicized or readily visible to the Council or Parish, but they still make a huge difference to our worthwhile initiatives. This Worthy Knight has had a positive impact in a number of recent initiatives such as our Parish Food Drive and working some of the concerts this season. This silent Knight is also the one who cuts the grass of our Parish and has been doing it for years free of charge. Our KOM for August is Brother Sam Simonis. |

July 2015
Father Charles Breindel
Just as the Knights of Columbus are sworn to support or Priests and Clergy, some Council’s are lucky enough to have the benefit of a member of the Clergy supporting their Council. Mother Teresa of Calcutta is one such Council. When we needed someone to step up and fill the only remaining officer position (that of Lecturer) this Brother Knight answered the call. In spite of some very challenging health issues and a recent accident, our KOM continued to support the Knights by attending the 4th Degree Installation and Assembly meetings. He is an inspiration and a true Servant Leader…our own Father Charles! |
|
June 2015
David Geisler
This Worthy Knight has been in our Council for just eight months, but has had a big impact in that short amount of time. You will see this Brother at many Council events including a regular volunteer at the Concerts. Additionally, our Knight of the Month for June spearheaded one of our most important and challenging programs, KOVAR. Since this initiative helps those who are in most need of our help, making a positive difference has even more meaning when our Council can contribute at record numbers. As you will hear from our Worthy Treasurer, this year we raised a combined $7773! Outstanding results! I am proud to say our KOM for June is Brother Dave Geisler! |

May 2015
Mike Maliniak
Our Knight of the Month is a Brother who can consistently be relied upon to do whatever is needed. He was a major player in the success of two highly visible events in April – the hosting of the Fourth Degree Exemplification and Our Council’s Parish Thank You Breakfast. And he immediately followed up with his volunteerism at the grill during Church of the Ascension Parish Feast Celebration – setting up, coordinating food preparations, hotdog chef, and generally filling any required task to ensure that our fellow parishioners had a wonderfully relaxing and fun experience. He is deeply involved with the Assembly’s events, and answered Our Council’s call for an experienced and steady hand to assume duties as a trustee for the next Fraternal Year. I ask you to join me in recognizing and thanking our - Council 12117’s Knight of the Month for May 2015 PGK/PFN Michael Maliniak!

April 2015
Phil Lynch
Our Knight of the Month is a Brother well known to all of us, and frequently recognized for his efforts. But in this instance, he excelled yet again! He unhesitatingly took charge of the cooking for not just our annual Council free “Thank You” Parish Breakfast, providing the makings of a delicious meal for more than 150 grateful Parishioners; but he also prepared breakfasts for the dignitaries at the first-ever Fourth Degree Exemplification hosted at Church of the Ascension. Directing every action within the kitchen, he led his team of volunteers in providing a first-class meal to the State Officers, visiting District Deputies, Degree Team and other invited dignitaries. Simply an Outstanding Success! Our Knight of the Month is Brother – Sir Knight Phil Lynch ! |

March 2015
Michael Encarnacao
Our Knight of the Month had an extremely busy month, kicked off with one of our Council’s keynote annual events and wrapping up in the midst of Holy Week! This Brother works tirelessly behind the scenes making sure that our Council receives the most up-to-date and timely information possible, while pushing us to expand our horizons regarding the numerous methods of communication and technology. He further expands that coordination and information population effort throughout the parish. He is a Ministry co-principal, scheduling and preparing the Lectors and Lay Eucharistic Ministers of our parish to ensure the weekly masses are celebrated seamlessly and solemnly. He ensured that Palm Sunday masses in both the main worship space and the ACC were fully staffed. More spectacularly, he single-handedly scheduled and coordinated a record-setting Spring Membership Blitz and Food Drive. He arranged for Brother Knights man sign-up tables, present audio-visual material, speak at all masses with results of at least nine (9) signed Form 100 new candidates applicants attributed to this Blitz. He also coordinated with brothers to collect parishioners food donations to our parish Food Pantry, orchestrating an estimated 2,500 lbs of non-perishable goods collected for distribution to the needy. An active participant in our annual Fish Fry and Founder’s Day/PGK Appreciation celebration events, he could be found everywhere, doing everything! It is my absolute honor and privilege to present to you, our Council 12117’s Knight of the Month for March 2015: Michael Encarnacao! |

February 2015
Bernard Sokolsky
Our Knight of the Month is a well known Brother who is always present, but often works behind the scenes in providing a tremendous amount of support to our Council. You’ve seen him recently jumping in to set-up, serve food and clean-up at our recent Culture of Life spaghetti dinner, contributing significantly to our ability to donate $900 to various local pro-Life organizations. He was an avid and repeat participant in our Super Bowl pool fundraiser (though unfortunately he didn’t win!) enabling our record setting earnings for our Charity funds and supporting our Council’s good works. And while his support is always there, I wanted to specifically recognize this brother for his lightning fast response to a call for need from the homeless members of our community. As you know, Church of the Ascension hosts an annual Homeless Shelter each year – for one entire week providing a safe place to wash and sleep, delicious meals prepared by parish volunteers, and making donated clothing available to those in need. This year’s extreme weather resulted in an increasing number of guests each succeeding night of the shelter, and the resources available became quickly stretched. I became aware of a critical shortage of insulated underwear available for distribution by the shelter volunteers – articles cherished by those who find themselves living on the streets in the winter. At 11:50 p.m. I emailed a plea to our Council members for assistance. In 17 ½ hours (let’s say he was sleeping for at least 6 of those), this Brother Knight had visited no less than six separate department stores, purchased an unknown number of insulated underwear, and anonymously delivered them to the Shelter. THAT, Brothers is Charity and compassion for our fellow man. It is my absolute honor and privilege to present to you, our Council 12117’s Knight of the Month for February 2015 ... Bernie Sokolsky.

January 2015
Mark Rupprecht
Our Knight of the Month is a newer Brother who is to be recognized not only for his actions this month, but for the significant impact he has made in his short time as a Knight. Known for his exceptional support to school, community and alumni events for years, he finally slowed long enough for us to corral him, and he hasn’t stopped since. He has participated in every event possible since joining us in October, including meetings and fundraising opportunities. He was a first volunteer to accept an invitation to serve on our Strategic Planning / Financial Review Committee. And he rolled up his sleeves and jumped right in to supporting our recent Culture of Life Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. Most of you saw him help set up the hall, and man the serving line, but few were still around as he was basically the ast man standing of the kitchen clean-up crew. And while slightly outside the ‘achievement of the month’ window, this Brother made the commitment (including a signed Form 4) to complete his remaining three degrees of our Order this year [and I can confirm he took his 2nd Degree on that path this past Saturday]. It is exactly this ‘energy burst’ that we need from our new members to continue to keep Our Council vibrant and alive.Brothers, it gives me distinct pleasure to present to you, our Council 12117’s Knight of the Month for January 2015 ... Mark Rupprecht |

December 2014
Edward Hobbs
Our Knight of the Month for December does more perhaps for Our Council than any other Brother member. A man a few words, he works non-stop, behind the scenes in making our organization runs. Repeatedly lauded by our District Deputy for being first or near first in submission of the volumes of required documents, audits and reports, few of you know who is truly responsible. In addition to carrying the load for Mother Teresa Council, this Brother serves as a member of the Parish Finance Committee, and on his free time, conducts tutoring for several students. Our Knight of the Month for December is PGK and Worthy Financial Secretary – Ed Hobbs ! |

November 2014

October 2014
Michael DeSalvo
Our Knight of the Month is truly a man who operates “behind the scenes”. You will see him everywhere in the church, doing whatever needs to be done. Specifically, he is a stalwart worker for our Parish Food Pantry, and you brothers and parishioners kept him extremely busy shuttling and shelving more than TWO-THOUSAND pounds of provisions during our recent Food Drive. He assisted in our highly successful Fall Membership Blitz, manning our information table and engaging with interested parishioners inquiring about Our Order. He also meticulously guards the sanctity and handling of the sacramental wine remaining after each weekends Mass’ Holy Communion, a solemn task rarely considered by most parishioners. Last but not least, he serves as one of our Guards, protecting the ceremonials and practices of our meetings and exemplifications. Our Knight of the Month for October is - Brother Michael DeSalvo ! |
|
September 2014
Don Wildes
Our Knight of the Month for September shouldered the load as the lead Chairman of our 3rd Annual “Birdies for Brothers’ Charity Golf Tournament. Through his efforts in coordinating organizational meetings, sponsorship solicitation, course and banquet arrangements, and golfer/player recruitment, we enjoyed another record setting year for Our Council’s single largest fundraiser. Additionally, he serves as the Recorder of Our Council, maintaining meticulous records at both the monthly Officer’s and Business meetings of a very active and fast moving organization. Our Knight of the Month for September is - Brother Don Wildes ! |

August 2014
John "Victor" Gruning
Our Knight of the Month is an outgoing but reserved Brother who can be counted on to participate and contribute to any Council event or project. I cannot recall ever seeing him without a smile and a kind word. This brother has been a long-standing member of our Council’s largest single fundraising project team, most often manning the lone vending kiosk as an army of one! He leads his family in being extremely active in our parish ministries, providing a shining example of our Council and our Order. He is just one of those Knights who is always there, always ready, and always participating. Brothers, it gives me distinct pleasure to present to you, Vic Gruning. |
|
July 2014
Stephen Von Haden
Our Knight of the Month is an outgoing, sincere, energetic Brother who can be counted on to participate and contribute to any Council event or project. Despite some personal trials in his life, he is always one of the first to offer a cheerful greeting, a helping hand, and a fresh perspective on life. This Sir Knight has stepped up among the ranks of a very select few in supporting our Council’s largest single fundraising project, having worked more than half of the scheduled concerts at the Amphitheater, even taking double-shifts when we were threatened with having to cancel out due to lack of available workers. He has graciously volunteered to serve this year as Director for one of our tougher programs to plan and enlist support, already bringing new and exciting ideas to meeting the challenge we have accepted in furthering our Council’s activity and visibility in our Program support. Brothers, it gives me distinct pleasure to present to you, our Culture of Life Director SK Stephen Von Haden. |

June 2014
Pat Rowland
Our Knight of the Month is well known to us all. He participates in every Council event – just like most of us. He is active in our church’s liturgy – like many of us. He’s an insurance member and a 4th Degree Knight – again, like a lot of you. But he does more! He’s an involved family man. He’s a member of our Parish Council. He has volunteered countless hours to support our Council and our Order. This past month, he has logged a good number of miles, and countless hours of training, research, phone calls, emails and texts to prepare his Brother Knights for the duties they have recently assumed. This month’s Knight of the Month has reached beyond Mother Teresa Council – his loyalty, dedication, and willingness to serve has already impacted hundreds of Brother Knights throughout Hampton Roads. You may not ever see or truly appreciate what goes on behind the scenes, but you would be amazed. Brothers, it gives me distinct pleasure to present to you, Council 12117’s Knight of the Month for June 2014 PGK and current Worthy District Deputy Pat Rowland! |

April 2014
Mike Nestor
Although Mike cannot make it to Council business meetings due to his work schedule, he still participated in a couple of big events in April. He was the "stand boss" for the Bruce Springsteen concert which kicked off our concert season. He led the group of volunteers that night and together they earned over $1,000 to support our council's charitable endeavors. He also rode in the "Tour de Cure" 100 mile bicycle ride to raise money for diabetes research. For these reasons, Mike was selected as the Knight of the Month for April. |
|
March 2014
Phil Lynch
Brother Phil Lynch helps out at practically all Council events, especially if it involves a kitchen. Without being asked, Phil stepped up to help with the State Meeting that was held at St. Gregory's in March. He was there early in the morning to help get the coffee going and stayed ensure lunch was prepared for the nearly 300 in attendance. For this, Phil was selected as the Knight of the Month for March. |
|
February 2014
PGK Roy Blakeburn
PGK Roy Blakeburn was selected as the Knight of the Month for February because he was the driving force behind the "Thank You Breakfast" that the council held for the Ascension community in January. Roy saw an opportunity for the Knights to give back to the church and led a group of 23 Brothers in preparing and serving breakfast to over 200 parishioners. His efforts resulted in a very successful event and peaked the interest of the church and several gentlemen who showed interest in joining the Knights of Columbus. |
|
January 2014
Ed Roelle
Brother Ed Roelle was selected as the Knight of the Month for January because of his support of our Council's Culture of Life activities. Brother Ed made sure we had the required items for our "Baby Bottle" collection in support of Newborns in Need. He tracked down the large collection bottles and helped coordinate volunteers for each Mass the weekend of January 24-25. His efforts helped collect over $216 in cash donations and numerous items such as baby bottles and clothing. |

December 2013
Jim Moran
Brother Jim Moran planned and executed one of the best Council Christmas Parties in recent memory. He coordinated with the Ladies Auxiliary for set up and decorations in the ACC. He also ensured that the children were visited by a special Christmas visitor and all the kids left with a gift. The party was a success all around. |

This month’s Knight of the Month has been a member of our council since 2009. He served as Warden in 2011-2012. In July he answered the call and volunteered on short notice to work our most profitable concert of the season. He said yes even though he knew he was sacrificing his personal landscaping business after a rainy week slowed his progress. For his willingness to assist the council at all cost, I am proud to announce that the Knight of the Month for July 2013 is Sir Knight Tom Apgar. |

June 2013
Lanny White
Lanny dedicated a tremendous amount of time over the past two months to ensure our Chaplain had a successful move to Christiansburg VA. He volunteered to take the lead and worked with several members of the church in preparing Fr. Charles’ house to move, packing his belongings, securing a rental truck and driving it across Virginia, and unloading the truck at Father’s new home. His willingness to volunteer his time, talents, and resources for the benefit of our departing Pastor, and Brother Knight, embodies what it means to be a part of this fraternal organization. |
