In June of 2012 my daughter Renee had just turned nine months old. We were in Virginia Beach visiting my mom when the news came on, and the reporter started talking about babies having to stay in one diaper all day because their parents did not have the resources to purchase an adequate supply of diapers.

My mom happened to be holding my daughter at the time it came on, and she decided that she had to do something to address this need. She did the research and began a diaper bank in her community. She talked a lot about this ministry and told me that there was not a diaper bank in Louisville. The more I heard about this need that many are unaware of, the more grateful I became every time I changed my daughter.

Thus, when my daughter was almost two, I decided I would research this issue and what could be done in Louisville. It was amazing to find out just how much need exists, and I decided to start a diaper bank ministry at my parish, St. Bernadette.

God has blessed this ministry in so many ways. We have given out 22,000 diapers in just six months to eight agencies with a much bigger need to address. We are working hard to do God’s will to help address this need, which not only helps with the cost of diapers, but also helps address the long-term health and emotional needs of babies and their parents.

The ability to change diapers at regular intervals will not only keep the baby clean, dry and healthy, but also helps diminish stress in the home and provides the parents with a sense of self-worth. I am ashamed to say that until I heard about this silent need I changed my daughter any time she needed it and did not give it much thought. After learning more I gained a whole new perspective about changing my daughter, and I thank God that I am able to change her every time she needs it.

I am honored that God has allowed me to work to help those in need, so those mothers, fathers, and babies have a brighter future ahead. I feel that this ministry promotes the love and care for all of God’s children. (Please note that we also collect diapers for adults with incontinence issues.)
