March 2022

Families of Ukraine

This month we will be honoring all those families that are suffering in Ukraine. Per the BBC (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-60555472):

“Ten million people have now fled their homes in Ukraine because of the Russian invasion, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says.

As well as the 3.6 million who have left for neighboring countries, another estimated 6.5 million people are thought to be displaced inside the war-torn country itself.”
If you haven’t already donated, please prayerfully consider donating to the KofC Ukraine Solidarity fund. Your gift today will provide temporary shelter, food, medical supplies, clothing, communications, and religious supplies. These items will all be immediately distributed, and 100% of your gift will go directly to these displaced people. The link is https://www.kofc.org/secure/en/donate/ukraine.html.

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present for peace in Ukraine. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

February 2022

Edgardo and Ofelia Eugenio

The Family of the Month hails from Our Lady of Victory Chapel. The husband has single-handedly designed, built, and donated both the inside and the outside nativity mangers. Additionally, he is in charge of setting up and taking down the mangers for the Christmas season. During the rest of the year, he is a conduit for Father Fimian to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

The wife leads the rosary before Mass and also helps with the altar linens. They are constant attendees at both the Masses and the weekly Adoration of the Holy Eucharist at Our Lady of Victory Chapel.

Congratulations to February’s Family of the Month, Edgardo and Ofelia Eugenio.

January 2022

Michael & Carol Stark

The Family of the Month hails from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Each year the husband leads the Bread for the World and Offering of Letters event, a letter-writing event to end hunger through advocacy; he is a founding member of the Haiti Twinning ministry; and he helps with the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST).

The wife volunteers for the Sunday Soup Kitchen, preparing and serving food to the less fortunate. Congratulations to January’s Family of the Month, Michael & Carol Stark.

December 2021

Kelsey, Dana, Johnathan, Justice, and Jocelyn Dixon

The Family of Month for the month is a family that has served the Basilica of Saint Mary faithfully. The family of five includes a 13-year-old boy and two toddlers under the age of three. Raising children is always a challenge, but to raise a 13-year-old boy who is so involved with his faith that he wants to proclaim the Word at Mass is heroic. The father is a member of the church’s choir. The other serves as the President of the Parish Council and serves as a lector along with their eldest son. Both parents are active in the Young Adult Ministry.

Join me in congratulating Kelsey, Dana, Johnathan, Justice, and Jocelyn Dixon as the Family of the Month for the month for December 2021.

November 2021

Steven & Patricia Cyrs

The Family of Month for the month of November is a family that has served Christ the King Church faithfully. This husband and wife team has led the weekly Bible study program and helped with the recent Wine and Cheese Party. The husband serves as a lecturer, he headed up the recent Debt Reduction Drive and the Annual Diocesan Appeal, and he coordinates and leads the bi-monthly landscaping and maintenance of all the church grounds. The wife has served as President of the church’s Women’s Club.

As a Knight, this brother serves as the Council Lecturer, has helped out with the monthly Shrimp Dinners, and led the recent council retreat.

Join me in congratulating Steven and Patricia Cyrs as the Family of the Month for the month of November 2021.

October 2021

PGK Jim & Linda Pressler

The October Family of the Month for Council 367 is PGK Jim and Linda Pressler. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus said “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant.” Jim and Linda are examples of servant leadership. Specifically:
Jim and Linda were instrumental in making the annual Blessed Sacrament parish picnic a success, Jim coordinating the beverages, grill and Linda selling raffle tickets.

He also sold beverages at the Council’s picnic and helped man the ticket sales at the shrimp dinners.

They both serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

Linda is always willing to help decorate the council hall for special events such as the Priest Appreciation Dinner and the Installation banquet.

When Jim found out that a wheelchair ramp for a medically disabled individual needed to be repaired, he coordinated efforts over a two-month period to repair the young man’s ramp.

Jim was also one of four leads for the Norfolk Tides baseball games. He worked the most games (24) and lead in the register sales as he sold $39,879 worth of products. Congratulations to PGK Jim and Linda Pressler for being selected as the October Family of the Month.

August 2021

Charlie, Melita, and Naomi Griggs

The Family of the Month hails from Our Lady of Victory Chapel and are well known there. All sing in the choir as well as acting as a “self-appointed” altar flower guild, taking care of not only the flowers on the altar itself but also those at the shrines to Mary and Joseph. The father fills some of the duties of usher while mother develops and publishes the schedules for altar servers and lecturers. She also leads the congregation in praying the rosary before Sunday Mass and assists in the care of the altar linens. They assumed these duties on their own, without being asked, and serve as an example to all.

Congratulations to Charlie, Melita, and Naomi Griggs for their selection as the August Family of the Month.

July 2021

Kay, Timothy, & Sophia Killian

The Family of the Month hails from Christ the King Church. This family is well known in the church and the Knights of Columbus. The matriarch of the family is a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer who served her country meritoriously. She is the mother of two children who are both very active in the church. The young daughter is an altar server and sings in the choir at CTK. The son was also an altar server and is himself a Knight. The mother is entrusted by the priest to be the Sacristan of the church. In that role she is responsible for the sacristy and all ceremonial ornaments to include candles, oils, altar clothes, incense, and communion pieces. She also assists when needed as a lecturer, altar server, and a Eucharistic Minister.

This incredibly devout and devoted parishioner is also in charge of training and indoctrinating all the altar servers. The husband is, unfortunately, deceased but was also a dedicated parishioner and a Knight of Columbus. This family is a model one for others to emulate.

Congratulations to Kay Killian, daughter Sophia, and son Timothy for their selection as the July Family of the Month.

June 2021

Andrew & Annie Bosse

The Family of the Month comes from Sacred Heart Church. They have been stalwart supporters of the parish for many years and served in a variety of volunteer positions. Together they have devoted countless hours of work to SHC. The husband has been a lector at mass for at least the past five years. His booming baritone voice and skilled enunciation are hallmarks of his weekly scripture readings. He has also served as the Chairman of the Parish Finance Council for the past three years. His financial expertise and calm leadership were instrumental in the prudent guidance of the parish through the severe loss of income during the pandemic period. The wife has helped with the instruction of children in the parish.

This family is the epitome of servant leaders in the Catholic Church. Congratulations to Andrew and Annie Bosse as the Family of the Month for June.
