Emmit R. Garner Jr. Vietnam veteran, Garwood Fire Dept. lieutenant Emmit R. Garner Jr. of Garwood, N.J., 66, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016. Visitors will be received at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield, N.J. 07090 on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. The burial services will be private. Emmit was born and raised in Chicago, Ill. After graduating high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served from 1968 to 1972. During this time, Emmit served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was the recipient of two Purple Heart Medals and a Bronze Star Medal. After Vietnam, he would continue to serve in active duty as a member of the Marine Embassy Guard. After an honorable discharge, Emmit moved to New Jersey where he attended Rutgers University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree. He would later earn a master of arts in liberal studies from Kean University. Emmit worked for Ford Motor Company as a workers' compensation administrator and proudly served as a member of the Garwood Fire Department for over 25 years. Emmit achieved the rank of lieutenant and was also an instructor at the Union County Fire Academy. Emmit is survived by his wife, Peggy (DeGraaf); his sons, Ryan and wife, Kourtney and Sean and wife, Isabella, and grandchildren, Anthony and Brynn.
