John J. Mariano Sr. Infantryman in Europe in WWII and Purple Heart recipient, 3rd and 4th degree K of C member who spent his life in Elizabeth's Peterstown section, 97 John J. Mariano Sr., 97, a lifelong resident of the Peterstown section of Elizabeth, N.J., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016. The funeral is from the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park, N.J., on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at 9:15 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Elizabeth at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. John was a bus attendant for the Elizabeth Board of Education for 18 years, retiring in 2004. Prior to that, he worked for Singer Manufacturing in Elizabeth. John served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was in Company L 314th Infantry, serving in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a 3rd degree member of the Dean Martin Gessner Knights of Columbus Council 3310 of Elizabeth as well as a 4th degree member, honorary life member, past assembly commander, trustee, captain, and pilot -- all of the 4th degree of John Dawson Gilmary Shea Assembly in Roselle Park. Additionally, John was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Admiral William F. Halsey Chapter 73 in Elizabeth and a member of the Crestlin Boys Club and Peterstown Seniors. At St. Anthony of Padua Church in Elizabeth, he was a lector and usher. John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Rose (Malgieri) Mariano, and two loving sons, Michael and John J. Mariano, Jr. Surviving are a loving daughter-in-law, Janet (Shaw) Mariano; adored grandchildren, Christopher and his companion, Tammy, and Marc and his wife, Jill, and a cherished great-grandson, Tyler.
