George F. Mirkovich was born on February 17, 1947 in Rahway, New Jersey to the late George and Rose Mirkovich. He was an alumni of Lehigh University, where he studied Electrical Engineering. He began his career with New York Telephone in 1970, and in 1983 joined AT&T. He held various engineering and management positions in strategic planning, customer equipment, and data networking until his retirement in 1998.
George gave freely of his time to many organizations outside his work and after his retirement. During the years 1998 through 2006, he was the property manager for the Morristown United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 45 years, serving as an officer of his councils for a majority of that time and also was a member of the William Penn Association, serving as a local officer as well as a National Director.
Since moving to Virginia in 2006, he was an active member of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Norge, Virginia, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and Sacristan. He was very involved in the cultural offerings that Williamsburg provides, attending numerous concerts and was a member of the Virginia Symphony Society of Greater Williamsburg. But his greatest joy, outside his family, was playing tennis outdoors twelve months a year at the Williamsburg Inn. George especially valued all the friendships he made on the courts.
He is survived by his wife, Michaelene, of 45 years, daughters, Melissa Peterson (Gene) of Franklin Park, NJ, Meagan Mirkovich of Newington, CT, and Monica McVehil (Michael) of Norwalk, CT, sister, Linda Stadler (Ronald) of Piscataway, NJ, and sister-in-law Annette David of Spotswood, NJ.
Visitation will be held at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, Virginia on Monday, July 11 from 5-7PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 104 Norge Lane, Williamsburg, Virginia, on Tuesday, July 12 at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the St. Olaf Catholic Church Debt Reduction Fund. |
