George Kitley Hedrick, 74, Noblesville, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2014. He was born in Indianapolis, IN on July 16, 1940 to Kathryn Smith. George was an adoring husband to Theresa (Blanford) for 52 years, as well as a loving, devoted father and grandfather. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, and lifelong active member of the Knights of Columbus, where he held multiple positions, including Grand Knight of the St. Thomas More Chapter from 2002-2004. George spent most of his life in Indianapolis, where he attended Indianapolis Public Schools and was a 1959 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School. He was an extremely active volunteer supporting the Catholic Youth Organization of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis parishes of St. Simon Catholic Church and Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where his children attended. His volunteerism earned him the CYO's Monsignor Busald Award in 1984, recognizing his sustained service to the youth of the Holy Spirit Parish.
George worked as a truck stop general manager for over 20 years at Blue and White in Indianapolis, Unocal 76 in Zionsville and Leavenworth, and the Cloverdale Travel Plaza in Cloverdale, IN. He followed that by owning and operating two Subway Restaurants in Mooresville, IN for more than ten years. Finally, he enjoyed semi-retirement working in the transportation department of both Warren Township Schools and Hamilton Southeastern Schools. George enjoyed a range of activities including gardening, painting, and golfing.
He is preceded in death by brothers, Dan Van Slyke and William Van Slyke; and is survived by his wife, Theresa; mother, Kathryn; sisters, Myrtle Cook and Kathy Stacy; children, Tim Hedrick (Robin), Doug Hedrick (Carla), Meachelle Wishart (Andrew), Jennifer Sullivan (Michael), Christopher Hedrick (Monica); and grandchildren, Brianne Inman (Greg), Hannah Wishart, Erin Hedrick, Christian Hedrick, Andrew Wishart, Jennifer Hedrick, Jack Wishart, Rachel Sullivan, Aidan Sullivan, Mae Hedrick, Christopher Sullivan, Allison Hedrick, Charles Sullivan, Benjamin Sullivan, Mary Hedrick, and George Hedrick.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, September 2 at 12:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 7243 E. 10th St., Indianapolis, IN 46219. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 1 from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Oakley Hammond Funeral Home , 5342 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46219. George will be laid to rest in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Cemetery.
