Flag Disposal Ceremony 2019

Mother Teresa Assembly 2506 in Garland Texas, has an annual US Flag disposal ceremony, usually close to Memorial Day. This year the event was on May 18th after the Saturday evening Mass at St Anthony Church in Wylie, TX. St. Anthony’s is home of Council 12300, one of the six councils in the Assembly.
The United States Flag Code (4 USC Sec 8 Para (k) Amended 7 July 1976) states:
"The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
Adhering to this recommendation, the Assembly officers and Color Corps along with members of the Wylie East High School Air Force ROTC gathered in the church parking lot, with a burning barrel and, supervised by the Wylie Fire Department, nearly 100 worn flags were retired by fire.
The ROTC members performed duties as the Flag Color Guard, and as the detail which disposed of the worn flags. The ceremony was dignified and expressed the respect and honor due the flags that represented our country in many locations. Flags were collected by every council in the assembly and several community groups that have come to depend on this annual event to dispose of their tattered flags. After the ceremony, the Assembly provided hamburgers and hot dogs to the ceremony team and guests.
