The "Missing Man Table"
The Missing Man Table, sometimes referred to as the “Fallen Comrade Table,” is meant to remind viewers of those fallen, missing, or imprisoned U.S. Military Service members.
Each item on the Missing Man Table represents the emotions and feelings reserved for those who did not come home. The ceremony symbolizes that they are with us, here in spirit. All Americans should never forget the brave men and women who answered our nation’s call to serve and fought for our freedom with honor.
The symbolism of the Missing Man Table:¨The table is round, to show our everlasting concern for our missing men.
The cloth is white, symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve. The single red rose; displayed in a vase, reminds us of the lives of these Americans and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith while seeking answers.
The red ribbon symbolizes our continued determination to account for our missing. A slice of lemon reminds us of their bitter fate; captured and missing in a foreign land. A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears of our missing and their families who long for answers after decades of uncertainty.
The lighted candle reflects our hope for their return, alive or dead. The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us and those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.
The glass is inverted, symbolizing their inability to share a toast. The chair is empty, the seat that remains unclaimed at the table.

Korean & Vietnam Wars program
Korean & Vietnam War
Census Program
The Fourth Degree will conduct a census of the membership to establish a record of service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Following the World Wars, the Order documented war service by its members in the archives at the Blessed Michael J. McGivney Pilgrimage Center however similar efforts were not conducted following either the Korean or Vietnam Wars.
Both the Korean and Vietnam Wars marked a significant departure in how troops served and returned from war, as service was no longer for the duration. Gone were the hero’s welcome on return. Vietnam veterans returned to a hostile and divided nation, where they were either overlooked or criticized for their service.
Where possible, documented service of deceased members needs to be recorded. Inclusion in the census shall be limited to veterans meeting the requirements established by Congress for the Korean Service Medal you must have served from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953, and was on permanent assignment or on temporary duty for 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days and performed his duty within the country of Korea.
For the Vietnam Service Medals, you must have served from July 3 1965 to March 28 1973 and was on temporary duty for at least 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days or have served in combat with a unit directly supporting a military operation in Southeast Asia (Vietnam and the contiguous waters and airspace in Thailand, Laos, or Cambodia; or the airspace thereof and in the direct support of military operations in Vietnam.
Certificates recognizing service will be delivered to surviving veterans via their councils.

The flowing text courtesy of SK Jerome Villarerreal
In the September 2024 edition of the Madison Living Magazine you will find another great write up for the Tootsie Roll 5K. Also if you read the article about the Annual Madison Street Festival, you will see an old picture of the Knights Color Guard leading the parade route. We have done it for years now and hope we are continuing the tradition.
The Color Guard picture brought back memories for me.
Pictured:
Far Left - Color Corps Commander SK Jim Frank ( Now Deceased, the assembly's first Color Corps Commander)
Second From Left - SK Dan Mellon (Now Deceased, I know his face is covered but to me that stride is that of SK Mellon. Someone correct me if i am wrong)
Color Bearer- SK Bill Moeller (Current Council and Assembly member)
State Colors- SK Jason Esteve (Now Deceased, Past State Deputy, PGK, Assembly's 2nd CCC )
Far Right - SK Dan Frisch (Current Assembly member and Mercy Council Brother)
The Color Guard picture is found on page 43. If anyone can date the picture please let me know, I would have to guess it is from around 2009 or 2010.
The Tootsie Roll article is located on page 86-87

Armed with the Faith - Military prayer-book
VIEW PRAYERBOOK
ARMED WITH THE FAITH
Knights of Columbus has supplied copies of Armed with the Faith prayer book to the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). The prayer books have been sent to active-duty U.S. Military personnel serving our country around the world.
Blessed by Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., of the Archdioceses for the Military Services, USA. Since 2003, more than 600,000 copies of Armed with the Faith, developed in partnership with the AMS, USA, have been given to Catholic U.S. servicemen and women, including those in National Guard and Reserve units.
Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly wrote in the 6th Edition introduction, “Throughout my military career, my fellow soldiers and I were strengthened and comforted by a daily commitment to prayer, as we asked for God’s intercession to protect our nation and help us preserve our freedoms,” said Supreme Knight Kelly. “It’s my hope that today’s active-duty military personnel will find the Armed with the Faith Catholic prayer book their indispensable resource for reflection and prayer.”
Commenting on the prayer book distribution, Archbishop Broglio added: “Once again, I renew my gratitude to my brother Knights of Columbus who actively contribute to the spiritual growth and welfare of the men and women in uniform and their families. Armed with the Faith is a precious example of their solicitude, which is expressed in so many ways. Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly continues a great tradition of patriotic service to our country, both as a retired Naval Officer and now from New Haven.”
The Knights of Columbus Catholic Information Service also publishes a home edition of Armed with the Faith for distribution to non-active-duty personnel, including military families, veterans, members of ROTC units, and students at the U.S. military service academies.
Assembly 2420 is investigating the possibility of obtaining copies of Armed with the Faith for distribution to non military personnel as described above.
Everyone can view and even download a digital version of the prayer-book by clicking on the VIEW PRAYERBOOK button above.
