Memorial Chalice Program

                                                   Assembly 3551 Memorial Chalice Program

The Memorial Chalice Program is designed to memorialize 4th Degree Sir Knights who have passed away. The Assembly will present a chalice, with his name engraved on the chalice, to a bishop, priest, parish, mission or religious home.  All SK Knights who have passed from November 1 to October 31 of a given year will be listed on one chalice. Upon the recommendations of the Assembly and the family(s), the chalice is then presented at the Memorial Mass held in November.  All Sir Knights listed on the chalice are remembered in every Mass in which the chalice is used.

By-laws of the Memorial Chalice Program:

  • It should be an on-going effort within the Assembly to raise volunteer contributions to support the Memorial Chalice Program.
  • The Assembly may increase annual dues from its members to help support the Memorial Chalice Program.
  • The Assembly should have at least two Chalices on hand to be presented as outlined in the by-laws.
  • With growth, should a group break away to form a new assembly, all funds and assigned chalices would stay with Assembly #3551.
  • A deceased Sir Knight had to have been a good practicing Catholic and in good standing as a 4th Degree Knight of Assembly #3551.
  • The departed Sir Knight’s name and appropriate dates will be engraved on the chalice as in the following example:  “In Memory of SK John P. Sample 1939-2007.”
  • All Sir Knights who have passed from November 1 to October 31 of a given year will have their names engraved on one chalice. There may be a year where more than 1 chalice is needed .
  • Family members of the deceased Sir Knights and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Assembly #3551 will recommend the chalice placement. Chalices are to be placed with a bishop, priest, parish, mission or religious home and be presented at the Knights of Columbus Memorial Mass held in November each year.
  • The chalice may be replaced with any other memorial, however must be approved by Assembly #3551.
  • A chalice should be on display near the head of the casket during the wake service or may be used in the funeral Mass.

Serving-Those-Who-Serve Program

When our country needed them, our Veterans answered the call to serve. Now members of the Knights of Columbus are being called to serve our Veterans.

Volunteers are needed at Veterans' Medical Centers on a regular basis.

Through the “Serving Those Who Served” program, councils and assemblies are asked to form corps of volunteers to meet the needs of our veterans on an ongoing basis.  Some volunteer opportunities for Knights of Columbus include the following:

  • VTN Drivers
  • Patient Escort
  • Customer Service
  • Medical Administrator
  • Warehouse
  • ER Ambassador
  • Same-Day-Surgery Ambassador
  • Health Benefits Administrator
  • GI Procedures Ambassador

Providing Transportation for Those Who Served

Providing transportation is one of many ways to assist Veterans getting to and from the Richard Roudebush Medical Center in Indianapolis. Many of the Veterans are unable to drive themselves for medical appointments and often need frequent visits. Volunteers like Tom Weintraut have been driving Veterans and finds the need is great. In the beginning, the need was only met in Marian County because of lack of drivers. Today, we have additional drivers and have opened a center in Zionsville to service Boone County. Thanks to our local Fire Fighters, we now have a place to park the Boone County vehicle. More volunteers are needed to meet the needs of Veterans in Boone County. For more information, please contact Tom Schemmel at ts@ffgofin.com or call 317-873-5086.

Above is a photo of Tom Weintraut opening the door for Army Veteran Richard Graves who goes to dialysis three times a week. Like many other Veterans unable to drive, Richard is grateful for our services.
