WALTER D CHIPPS

 

Walter Donald Chipps, 87, of St. Joseph, passed away at his home on October 16, 2016.
Walter was born on October 10, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Norman Chipps and Pauline (Greifewstein) Chipps. He was raised in Whittmore, Michigan, and graduated from Whittmore High School.
He joined the Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. After the Conflict, he was stationed in St. Joseph, where he met Joan Lyon. They married on August 28, 1950. Joan preceded Walter in death on May 11, 2001.
For 35 years, Walter worked for the United States Post Office as a supervisor. He retired in November 1984. Walter was also a member of the American Legion Post 359, VFW and a founding member of St Francis Xavier Knights of Columbus Council 15126, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and choir, and the St. Joseph-Kansas City Concert Choir.
Survivors include:four daughters, Rita (Steve) Moore, Julie (Bruce)Palmer, Ruth (James, deceased) Crawford, and Mary Chaney; four sons, Norman, Dennis, Mike and Jimmy (Cindy); his sister, Marie Berkholder; 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; and sister, Betty Dorcey.
A visitation will be held at noon Wednesday, October 19, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &Sidenfaden Chapel; a Rosary at 6 p.m.; and the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 20, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
