Pause & Reflect!

Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus & is one of the holiest days of the Christian calendar. The Easter message is one of hope & victory. It symbolizes God’s love & the promise that man's soul is immortal. As Christians, we should carry the true meaning of Easter in our hearts throughout the year & not just on one Sunday.

It is hard to dwell on the meaning of Easter without considering the significance of the Last Supper, also known as the Lord's Supper. The broad implications of that event set the tone for the hope of what is to come. The beauty of the renewing of faith is what gives Easter its spirit.

As we know, the Passover supper is an observance of the divine guidance of God at the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. It celebrated the covenant that God made with His people that He would be their God & would deliver them. How fitting is it that Jesus would use the observance of this old covenant to bring forth a new pledge, a new covenant with His people & the purpose for which He was sent.

The breaking & partaking of the unleavened bread indicated the sharing of the body of Christ. We share of the body to make Him an inseparable part of us. The drinking of the cup is a symbol of the blood of the new covenant God made with us through Jesus that whoever believes in Him shall receive eternal life. When we eat this bread & drink from this cup we do so as a remembrance of the living Christ.

The Lord's Supper is an observance & a ceremony. At times we become desensitized to the significance of observances as we get caught up in the ceremonial aspects. We must never lose sight of what Jesus did for us at Calvary. The Lord's Supper, however & whenever it is observed in our various churches, should be done in full reverence & remembrance of the One who died for us. The bread & wine, the body & the blood should be reminders to all, to look inside ourselves & raise our commitment before God. But, in all of this, the Lord's Supper IS a time of renewing the promise that lays in store for the faithful – that we are renewed to life everlasting & party to the promise of a living Savior's return.
