ALPHONSO J. LANGER

 



Al J. Langer recently of Northfield and formerly of Owatonna died July 13, 2018 at Three Links Care Center in Northfield. Mass of Christian Burial is set for Friday, July 20, 2018 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Owatonna. Burial will take place at Dania Cemetery in Havana Township with full Military Honors by the Steele County Funeral Detail. Friends may greet the family on Thursday, July 19, 2018 from 4 – 7 pm at Brick – Meger Funeral Home (1603 – Austin Road – Owatonna) and one hour prior to the funeral liturgy on Friday. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home.

Alphonso (Al) the son of Adolph and Helen (Kubicek) Langer was born June 1, 1923 on a farm south of Hope in Somerset Township and was the oldest of 5 children. He attended various country schools until enrolling in St. Marys Academy in 1935 and graduated from Owatonna High School in 1941. Al worked at the Kelly Company from 1939 - 1943 prior to being drafted into the U. S. Army in March 1943 and honorably discharged from the Army Air Force in October 1945 at the end of WWII. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Rasmussen June 11, 1946, and celebrated 71 years of married life together prior to her death in 2017.
Al was employed at Security Bank and Trust Company until 1962 when he ran for and successfully won his campaign for Steele County Treasurer, a job he held from 1962 until his retirement in 1989. The majority of his life he farmed his land south of Owatonna. Al and Phyllis raised 9 children on the family farm. Al enjoyed farming, square dancing, listening to polka music, going to the casino to play black jack and playing cards with his friends and family. Al was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, Eagles and VFW, a member of the American Legion and a veteran of WWII.
Al will be missed by his nine children, Joan (Roger) Nass, Ames, IA: Joyce Edwards, Alameda, California; Rodney (Janann) Langer, Owatonna; Judy (Dave) Daniels, Hastings; Janet (Patrick) Gannon, Rochester; Jeanne Hanson, New Hope; Steve (Deb) Langer, Owatonna; Dave Langer, Owatonna; Ken (Melissa) Langer, Owatonna; 23 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, his brother Joseph (Joan) Langer, Northridge, California and his sister, Clara (Jack) Hall, Tuscon, Arizona. Al was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, son-in-law, Phillip Edwards, grandson, Lamar Owen, brother, Ernest (Gertrude) Langer, and his sister, MaryAnn (Eugene) McCollow.
