COUNCIL #1384 - ANNAPOLIS REMEMBERS
EDWIN CARL WEBER

Edwin Carl Weber, Jr. (Ed) passed away at Hospice of the Chesapeake at the age of 92 on May 30th, 2018. He was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey and was a 1944 graduate of Bridgeton High School. The United States Navy allowed him to graduate and then, after 6 weeks of training, sent him to New Guinea where he sustained a broken back during an air raid. He returned to United States and graduated from Washington College in 1949 under the GI plan. During the summer of 1949, he was employed at the State of Maryland Water Pollution Control Commission, the predecessor to the Department of the Environment. This commission was among the first governmental agencies established to protect a state's natural resources. Ed established the first rapid response team to address oil spills with the purchase of an army surplus truck. After expanding and modernizing the program, he was later cited by Maryland's Governor for his efforts during an oil spill cleanup in the Chesapeake Bay. He took particular pride in his efforts in educating those in the business sector of the benefits of correcting environmental hazards without the need for governmental penalties. At the time of his retirement in 1996, he was one of the Maryland State employees with the longest tenure of service. After retirement, he was recognized for his volunteer service provided for the Annapolis Civitan, the Salvation Army, Meals On Wheels and the Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden. He was married to Elizabeth Ann Funk who passed away in 1970. He then married Nancy Lee Finkelstein, who predeceased him just last year. He is survived by his three children, Paul Weber, an attorney in Annapolis, Carl Weber, an airline pilot in Dallas, and Patricia Klier, a first grade teacher in Greensboro, North Carolina, along with 9 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was a resident of Hillsmere Shores from 1960-2017 and was one of the founding members of the Hillsmere Shores Improvement Association. He chose to have the large, prickly holly tree on the corner of Hillsmere and Edgemere lighted for Christmas each year, much to his sons' dismay as they had to help hang the lights. After Nancy's death, Ed made a new life at Baywoods of Annapolis, enjoying what he described as some of the most interesting people living in Annapolis. Ed was one that was always "there" for his family, coworkers and friends from Hillsmere, Civitan and Baywoods communities. Viewing will be at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home 147 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis MD 21401 on Friday, June 1, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church 620 N. Bestgate Rd, Annapolis, MD 21401 on Saturday, June 2 at 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Helen Avalynn Tawes Garden, Inc. and will be greatly appreciated.
