COUNCIL #12537 - SACRED HEART REMEMBERS
HAROLD G MCCAULEY

Harold G. McCauley, age 92, of Southport passed away peacefully on Christmas morning after living a wonderful life. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, son of Tom McCauley and Catherine Connolly. He was the 4th of five boys.

Harold volunteered for the Navy at the age of 17, where he served honorably from 1942-1946. He was on board the USS Philadelphia in the North African and European Campaigns. He was also on the USS Pittsburgh in the Pacific at Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Notably, Harold was on the bridge of the USS Pittsburgh, off the coast of Japan, when a typhoon severed 100 feet of the bow of his ship.

Harold returned to Brooklyn after the war and married Marion Hanlon, his neighborhood sweetheart on Feb.12, 1947. They settled in Brooklyn to start a family and Harold joined the NY Police Department. He spent 40 years with the NYPD in many parts of the city. During the last 14 years of his career, he was a Lieutenant and Chief of Staff for the Police Commissioner's Office, serving six different police commissioners.

When the family started to grow, Harold and Marion relocated to Rosedale, NY. Despite moonlighting at other jobs to earn enough money to send his 4 children to private schools, Harold always found time for many big Irish family gatherings where he was always the life of the party. At his 90th birthday celebration, he led 40+ family members in singing his favorite Irish song – Galway Bay.

Prior to living in Southport, he resided in Toms River, NJ and was a daily communicant at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector. He volunteered at the Holiday Care Center in Toms River, and enjoyed being part of the Jersey Shore 10-13 Association.

He loved his adopted home of Southport where he relocated in 2009. He was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, the NYPD LBA and the NYPD Emerald Society.

Harold leaves behind his wife of nearly 71 years, Marion McCauley and four children, William of Delray Beach, FL, Robert of North Palm Beach, FL, Jean Malinofsky of Oak Island, NC, Gregory of Millstone, NJ and seven grandchildren, Justin, Kristen, Keara, Morgan, Kimberly, Tierney and Katie.

"Known as a Good Husband, a Good Father, a Good Friend, and a Good Cop."

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Arlington National Cemetery.
