Donald Joseph Flynn

Donald Joseph Flynn, 84, of Danville, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2017, at his home, with his wife by his side.
Per his request, Don will be cremated and a short memorial visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Thursday, October 12, at Pape Family Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams St., Danville. His eulogy will be read at 4 p.m. by his longtime friend Bob Rodgers and some memories shared by his family. There will be no graveside services and, per Don's request, a small portion of his ashes will be taken to Wrigley Field in Chicago by his grandsons, Kris Cope and Brian Flynn, who shared his great love and loyalty to the Cubs and attended many games together.
Don was born in Chicago, Ill., on January 21, 1933, to Martha Dryfhout and Walter Flynn, both deceased.
He married Joan E. Liljeberg in 1953 in Chicago, and she preceded him in death in 1990 after a long illness.
Two daughters were born of this union: Kathleen (Steve) Tanner of Nampa, Idaho, and Patricia (Danny) Kingen of Lexington, N.C. Also surviving are his beloved grandsons, Kris Cope of Cave Creek, Ariz., Brian (Lyndsi) Flynn of Clemmons, N.C., and Eamon Tanner of Nampa, Idaho. His much-loved grandchildren Ashton and Landan Cope and Cooper and Tessa Flynn also survive.
Don later married Mary Kay Carson in 1991 and she passed away in 2008. Three stepchildren and seven step-grandchildren survive.
Don married Kathleen (O'Connell) Hawkins in 2010 and she survives, along with three stepchildren: Kate (Jeff) Harvey of Livonia, N.Y., Janie (Lance) Hoffman of Bonsall, Calif., and Mark O'Connell of Spartanburg, S.C.
Don graduated from Saint Patrick's High School in Chicago. He relocated to Danville as office manager for the newly built Continental Can Company, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1980 after 30 years of service. He then managed Prairie States Warehouse until he retired from there in 1996.
Don was a member of Holy Family Church, former board member of Knights of Columbus and Trustee for Landmark Credit Union. He was a member of the Columbus Club, Elks Lodge and former member of Danville Boat Club. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and attended the 1945 World Series at Wrigley Field with his uncle Charlie Dryfhout, who had just returned from WWII and was still in uniform for lack of civilian clothes. He was thrilled that he was able to witness his beloved Cubbies win the World Championship in 2016. He enjoyed sharing the ups and downs of games with his longtime loyal Continental Can friend Bob Rodgers of Bolingbrook, Ill.
