MICHAEL L VARLOTTA

 

Michael L. Varlotta, 90, Hollidaysburg, passed away Monday at Phoenixville Hospital.

Michael was born in Altoona, son of the late Donato and Joanne (Minnino) Varlotta. Michael married Josephine “Babe” Pozzuto on July 6, 1963.

Michael is survived by his wife, a son, Micahel L. Varlotta II (Patricia) of Collegeville; three grandchildren: Ariane (fiancé Robert Klepacki), Michael III and Haley Varlotta; and a nephew, Dennis Young, M.D (Janice) of FL.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Young.

Michael was a graduate of Altoona High School and received a degree in drafting from Penn State University. He also received a certification as an electrician through the Altoona Vocational Technical School.

Michael served in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater of Operations in the Philippines.

He retired from Conrail as Assistant Superintendent after 44 years of service. Michael also was co-owner of D and M Builders.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Altoona and St. Mary Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.

Michael was a past Faithfull Navigator of the Knights of Columbus, Altoona Assembly. He was a member of The Navy League, American Legion, Bavarian Aid Society, Italian Heritage Society, Park Hills Country Club and was a founding member of the Heidelberg Country Club. He also served on the Frankstown Township Zoning Board and Sewer Authority.

Michael enjoyed restoring and remodeling old homes. He would be what today is known as a “flipper”, flipping homes before it was commonplace.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Friday, October 6, 2017 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 am, Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
