STEPHEN JOSEPH D'URSO
NEWPORT NEWS - The race is o'er; the battle won! On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 1:40 p.m., Stephen relinquished his duties as controller of his life to a Higher Power. Born March 28, 1932 in Lawrence, MA, Stephen attended local schools graduating from Merrimack College in Andover followed by years of service to his country retiring as Colonel in the Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. An active member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, Stephen devoted many hours to the Knights of Columbus #5480, the Lion's Club, the Peninsula Italian American League #2245, Meals on Wheels and others. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Alfred and Dominic. He is survived by his loving wife, Janet D'Urso; only sister, Rose DeFusco of Andover, MA; few cousins; and several nieces and nephews as well as several great-nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by Douglas and partner Rob McTier; Darlene and husband James Holt; Deanna and husband James Chesson; Dawna and partner Lindsay Gray; and Dellana who was a constant help in his final days. His grandchildren include Lt. James (Ches) of Hawaii, Janet of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Stephen Chesson of Charleston, SC, Garrison and Amelia Holt of Yorktown, VA, Emery D'Urso and Johnathan Gray of Hampton, VA. A Chalice Service conducted by members of the Knights of Columbus is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Weymouth Funeral Home followed by Visitation from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Liturgy to be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 25, 2017 at St. Jerome Catholic Church on Denbigh Boulevard with a Reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Interment will follow at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA at 3:00 p.m. The family sincerely thanks all who helped in the care of Stephen these past few years as he transitioned on the way to the Father.
